Hi,
The old vertical steam engine at Kelham Island was built by Davy Bros. (later called Davy United) and used to drive the armour plate mill at BSC River Don Works.
When I worked for BSC (1967-1970), I had the opportunity to see the mill and engine operating for what must have been one of the last times. Its a pity the rolling mill couldn't have saved along with the engine. Then would would have really seen what amazing machines those old engines were.
Fox's (later BSC) at Stocksbridge used to drive their roughing mill with a big horizontal steam engine but the engine was replaced by an electric motor, or motors, some time in the mid 1960's.
Regards
