I've got a small site, done in FP. I have hosting with 123-reg (also purchased FP extensions). after I have published my site in FP and attempt to access the site, I get a message screen from 123-reg stating "please upload your index file to replace this page". I've had this before and was told to rename my 'home' page to 'index.htm and it worked, but since I have updated some of the pages, I have the same prob again.

make sure when you are uploading that you keep the file name in lower case.

have you tried index.html ?

Files are all in lower case and have tried changing the index page from htm to html (I thought the same). Still no luck.

It lets me publish - no errors or anything and in the split screen (in FP) it shows the files both in local (my pc) and in remote (http://www.icenails.co.uk).

If you access the above link you will see the page I get.

This may sound a stupid question but you don't have your index page stored in a folder within the website do you?!?

So long as your index page is in the root and is called either index.htm or index.html in lowercase then there shouldn't be a problem. Maybe the site takes a while to update?

In "mywebs" on my computer, the folder is called "icenails" which contains all the pages - including the index page. but when I publish in FP, I open the folder to reveal the list of my pages, including the index page. The only other folder within this folder is 'images'

Having checked your site you have everything stored in a subfolder and not in the root of the site

Icenails (http://www.icenails.co.uk/icenails/)

You need to go into frontpage and move the files into the root of the site folder :)

http://www.icenails.co.uk/ works for me -- no images but the page is there, 6 buttons, and scrolling text, with a large title and ICE in blue..

So, does everything need taking out of any subfolders - including the images folder and a couple of other sub-folders. In other words, so all the files (with no folders are in 'mywebs' ?

Put everything in the root folder and upload it again :)

Should be all ok from there on.

A few of the page links don't work though, are you aware of that?

Yeah, just noticed myself. maybe a similar problem with sub-folders etc. Or maybe I need to have a closer look at the link. Least of my problems though now I can host it.

However, although the links don't work, if I type, for example http://www.icenails.co.uk/aboutme.html it takes me to the appropriate page - which tells me the pages are there, just my links that need some work perhaps..

Your links don't work because the html code is wrong. Your buttons are all form type input buttons, but normal web links don't work that way. You either need to put the graphics up and use an a href="blah.html" type link with an image tag in between it, or you could probably fudge something with form based links, but it wouldn't be very accessible.

Thanks. Back to the drawing board for me then. Its a 'learn as you go' curve I'm on.

You've all been very helpful - I know where to come next time (and there will be a next time!) i'm in trouble.

After a little more advice...

The name of my wife's nail business is Icenails. However, from speaking to her at work it doesn't display the name on the front page in the same font which I used. It is two fonts I downloaded and installed in my Windows called 'Chill' and 'Prisoner'.

Is the problem because other pc's accessing the site will not have those same fonts and therefore their system will use alternatives? How can I remedy this?

For the time being, I have simply saved the words as an image and put that on the site (although according to my wife it is all black not black and blue). Problem here is, with a background, there is a white square around the image.

Any ideas?

Yes unless the viewer has the same font installed it will show the users default font.

Yes, any font you specify for text will only appear on end-user machines that have that font, and, depending on how you've specified it, only with a specific user agent such as IE.

One alternative is to use graphics, as you say. The rectangle that you speak of is probably because you are using an image as a link, but not including border="0" as part of your IMG tag.

Bear in mind that, if you just use graphics for your links without ALT attributes it reduces accessibility, and if you use graphics instead of text for important key words such as page headers it can reduce your page ranking in search engines.

Ahh, no, I misunderstood your issue - you mean that the image is not transparent. To fix that you need to load it into a graphics editor and set the transparent colour to the colour of the background- white in this case, before re-saving it. The way you would do that varies between editor, and the success of the result will vary depending upon the image.

Can anyone recommend a graphics editor that I can amend the transparency. Preferably freeware?

Thanks

The only free editor that I know of is Gimp http://www.gimp.org/windows/
