Whilst I was coming into Sheffield on a train from the north yesterday I couldnt help but notice the cranes currently dotted all over the city skyline.

I could count at least 9 of them, it was really good to see, gives the impression that this city is on the up! Not bad to say theres only 14 cranes up in the centre of Leeds according to Skyscrapercity.com.

I'm sure last time I looked the incinerator had 2 cranes over it?

Also theres one on Rockingham Street over the new apartments.

Ah, the cranes! This is the council's latest attempt to make the city more appealing to tourists. In an attempt to emulate a typical Spanish resort, the council have decided to create lots of central building sites complete with lashings of cranes to add authenticity to the skyline.

Nice touch, I must say.

Muy bien!

Well it would be pretty hard to construct the new buildings without them! :loopy:

Cranes - this is a good sign that Sheffield is finally on the up and up after the 80s and 90s doldrums - I don't think people should moan about it ...

It was the same way in Dublin in the mid-90s - high crane count - just before the Irish Celtic Tiger took off ...

So will we have a Sheffield Shhhhhh erm .. what ? any ideas ?

The abundance of cranes is not totally indicative of a booming city.It reflects the destruction of ill-considered development over the years.Dyson House,Town Hall Extension,Kelvin Flats and other hideous schemes approved by half-witted planners and planning boards.
Currently the Council is about to demolish the attractive Yorkshire Grey pub alongside Arundel Gate. Its replacement will be a snotty chrome and glass wine bar frequented by the loft-living suits that
have scented the chance of some quick development dosh before
disappearing into their Pop Music Centre in the sky.

The development of Sheffield has taken off very well over the last ten years with Meadowhall, Sports facilities and the various business parks. I think alot more needs to be done on the housing side though.

All the main developments seem to have worked apart from the music centre and I'm sure we can look forward to even more fantastic facilities to come.

I may even begin to say to people that I'm from Sheffield, soon.

Well if you live in Wigan, where would you rather say you are from? Sheffield or Wigan?

(Btw I am from Sheffield)

Not always. Counted nearly two dozen on the Manchester skyline, most are for outrageously priced apartment complexes.

Almost never, I would say.

The dragging of something nice out of something bad is a basic human urge and a dragging a success out of a failure is a classic example.

Pardon me: but in short: BAZZO is swaying towards the silly side.

Actually, read this:

for such a small set of Islands, we manage our environment quite well, but we will never be able to live collectively in high-rise indefensible-space.

Brits we are.

I'm not sure what they are building where Sinclairs used to be (corner of Regent Street) - its not University property as far as I know - but next to it they've just opened as a new bar called Sharkeys, which is built on the land where the old cottages used to be.

They're also just finishing a new building on the corner of Leavygreave Road and Regent Terrace opposite Jessops - called the ICOSS Building, its going to have some University staff in it and a few other people as well. I currently work on Regent Street, and our department might be moving into the ICOSS Building in December.

Jon

It's going to be the new Sinclairs store on 2 floors with luxury apartments on the four floors above.

You can see a pic of what it will look like here: http://www.sinclairs-china.co.uk/Feature.htm

They are not going to demolish that building are they ?

Blimey, that new Sinclairs building looks a bit swish! I'm really pleased they seem to be developing this part of town... I've worked in this are for 10 years now, and the new building at the top of Fitzwilliam Street, the new Tescos building on West Street, the new Swim Inn, the one on the corner of Gell Street, they all look really smart.

The old Sinclairs building is down already! I'm not sure if that building is the one you mean, but where Sinclairs used to be, on the corner of West Street/Glossop Road and Regent Street, has gone. Its a hole with cranes in it.

If they have trouble finding a string of lights to buy they could always round up all the Zebra Crossing lights and string em together, as judging by the other thread there are loads in Sheffield they could use!!

PS impressed with the size of your crane!

That busy-busy crane on the St. Paul's Place hotel site has managed to completelty obliterate the view from Pinstone Street of the Winter Gardens building.

Did the council decide this wasn't an architecural masterpiece after all - or perhaps they only see the world in plan view and just can't visualise that one building will hide another behind it ?

I'm sure I've seen one the general direction of Shalesmoor but couldn't say exactly where as I was driving to work at the time and I got up Netherthorpe Road so couldn't say for certain that it isn't the same one as the one behind the Cathedral.

Interesting news from the inside for all you crane spotters. I was with two plasters last week, and apparently a good proportion of the region's plasterers are all up in leeds finishing new student apartments. Like Sheffield, there have been loads of new ones over the last 5 years.
Anyway the Leeds developments are almost finished, and all the building firms are planning for mass migration down to sheffield next year where there will be hundreds of new apartments in lots of new blocks. Many in the Kelham island area and around the new north sheffield city centre link road which will be finished over the next couple of years. All plans are nearly finished, and if you think there are a lot of student flats now, then you won't know what's hit you in a few years, you'll be foaming at the mouth with all the excitement/frustration (del. as appropriate)

.. Apparently

P.S. Unners,
there is a massive road crane which comes every sunday around the back of Mortons. Campo lane has been coned off for the last month of sundays.

My little boy loves to see all the Cranes, he thinks they are Cranky Crane from Thomas the Tank engine, so all this regeneration keeps him happy, which keeps me happy!

What are they building behind the Catherdral anyway - surely not another block of apartments so close ? Or is it to be a drop-in refuge shelter for the city's homeless ? Which would be better for Sheffield ?

Yes you have it.

There is a patch of grass next to the pub which used to be the golden ball, lately the art room. One day a building firm realised that the town centre was absolutely despirate for a few city living apartments

See the earlier post I made about (inside info from some plasterers), the quantity of new sheffield flats will be 2ce as many as there are today in 5 years time.

It looks like Carrilion are planning to build a block of flats at the botton of London Road, where the garage has been demolished, the "artists impression" looks good.

I think Carrilion have had a billboard anouncing they are going to build an office block next to Park Square roundabout for over a year now.

Student apartments being developed by Unite. Carrilion are just the main contractor.

Terrible isn't it. It was a really nice vista across the peace gardens to the Wintergardens, now the view is obliterated. Money talks eh?

AndrewC
12-12-2004, 15:34
How often do you go inside the winter garden? Ever thought about using it as a public space? How about looking at it from the other views there are of it around there?

And what about the new views you have of it from tudor square and what will be st pauls place?

And what about the views of the central library you had before the winter gardens was built?

Or are you just complaining for the sake of complaining?
why doesn't the council knock down every building around the wintergardens so that we can all marvel at its beauty instead of actually have a proper city.

BTW, by the end of february there should be at least 2 big cranes, one either side of moore street, by the ecclesall roundabout , one between the new offices behind the DSE building and the ring road, and the other on the site of the old carpet shop, beside the big concrete car park on the other side of moore street/charter row. They're for two +200ft apartment blocks, which i know lots of people on here will love!! and they should be around the 3rd and 4th tallest buildings in sheffield.

It was a shame they knocked down the Town Hall Extension as it formed a good backdrop to the new Peace Gardens. As for the giant greenhouse it is impressive but maybe it should have been erected in the Botanical Gardens, the restored pavillions are pleasant but do not have the wow factor. what does everyone else think?
