View Full Version : Being induced-what to expect
steamnratbag 08-01-2007, 23:05 Hi everyone.
Just wanted a bit of advice for my sister who is due to be induced tomorrow afternoon (if the tardy little one doesn't show by then!!). She forgot to ask the ante natal class tutor what would happen in case of inducement becos she was so huge we were convinced the baby would be early . Can anyone tell us what to expect? Is it shorter, more painful than natural onset?
Cheers
Ratty :)
It depends on the baby! I had to be induced with my 2nd child as he was a stubborn little so and so! I had to go into hosptial at 9am in the morning to have a pessary and at 4 30 that afternoon, I had my waters broke and by 7 58 pm I had had my son. Unfortunately yes, I believe it is more painful (well it was for me anyway!). The contractions seemed to be 10 times worse than they were with my 1st child, but it was only really a 4 1/2 hour labour, so yes it is shorter and yes it is more painful (sorry!!!). Good luck to your sister!
i've been induced with my first 3. sorry to say but if they use a pessary, it is more painful it starts with real bad period pains then should start contractions, though does not always work, if it doesnt or they want to hurry it up they will break waters if poss then put a her on a drip (they did that with my first as nothig happened after few hrs and wanted her out) its not as bad without pessary. once my contractions started they were all born within 4hrs including last one who came natural so cannot say is cause of been induced, hope all goes well for her:thumbsup:
steamnratbag 09-01-2007, 22:28 thanks people. just got back from the hospital and still no sign of the baby! it seems that they no longer give pessarys. they just rub a bit of cream around the cervix to get it softened then break your waters. we are all feeling a little hacked off to be honest. they asked her to go in today and then said they can't do anything as the labour ward is busy. I know this isn't anyones fault but why let her go across the city for nothing! she's had hardly anything to eat since dinner and can't get any food because the patient canteen is closed. why not just ask her to come in in the morning if it was obvious there was no one available to assist. now she has to spend the night in a ward empty except for herself. Rant over!

thats what i ment by pessary, and it blinking hurts like realy bad cystitis plus it starts contractions from cervix not higher up in womb like they do normally which is why it seems to hurt more, just remind her when she gets the ring of fire(as some1 once said to me) its almost over as heads on way out:thumbsup:

You might need someone more technically minded than me. Sorry! I do know that if you download them onto a website like Yahoo, you could make a link. I just can't point you in the right direction. But hopefully this will bump it to the attention of someone who can.
weenireeni 15-01-2007, 21:50 you can host the pics onto a website like imageshakc or photobucket, it should be self explanatory once youre on the site, then paste the website link here! :)
Nirvanaliz 30-01-2007, 06:54 Just got a quick question so thought I'd bump this thread rather than start a new one.
Does anyone know how long Jessops let you go over your due date before they'll induce you?
cosywolf 30-01-2007, 11:42 I think the general rule is no more than two weeks, as long as everything is fine. After that apparently your body starts to become less efficient at meeting the baby's needs and complications can arise.
steamnratbag 31-01-2007, 02:14 Yep it is two weeks. Sis was asked to ring Jessops a few days before the two weeks were up and they booked her in for a time on the 14th day exactly. Hope it goes well:thumbsup:
Nirvanaliz 31-01-2007, 07:57 Cheers, I had a quick word with my midwife yesterday and she confirmed it would be 2 weeks although I'd be offered a membrane sweep after around 7-10 days. Now I know what that is, it sounds a bit unpleasent. I would probably give it a go through if it had a chance of making the baby arrive.
I've also been recommended to give raspberry leaf tea a try as it prepares your muscles for pushing. The midwife said I could drink it now but as I've heard it can bring on contractions I'm going to wait until I'm 37 weeks - don't want to get things started too early.
steamnratbag 31-01-2007, 12:12 That membrane sweep isn't as bad as it sounds apparently. It's a bit undignified :? but no worse than a usuall gyno exam.xx:)
meumeu77 31-01-2007, 15:06 I've just had one done. It's a bit like having a smear test done. Not very pleasant but it's done very quickly too so it's bearable.
I didn't think that hurt but when I was induced and had my waters broke the labour started straight away and man was it painful. Thank god for the epidural!
