after reading the threads about abbeydale grange school and the many people who went there i was wondering if any one had heard any of the stories that went with holt house (known as 6 form and typing lessons in there) i dont know if people were just pulling my leg about the stories they told me.

the house was a single mothers house over 100-200 years ago when one night it caught fire and one of the mothers throw herself and her baby out and they have haunted it ever since,
every so often there is a fire in the same place on the same night which carnt be explained

what ever happened to the house i heard it had been burnt down which no expernation

can any one put me right about the stories

The house was used as part of the sixth form for quite some time then it was used as an adult education centtre. Sadly it was then allowed to become derelict and was eventually pulled down and a new little group of posh houses now stands on the site. There were stories of a ghost which had something to do with a cupboard under the stairs but I can't remember details. The old grange building that was the main sixth form was another old house and that did burn down and the site is unrecognisable nowadays as all the prefabs and the gym have gone as well.

That was the location of the old grange building, I think there is a picture of it on Friends Reunited taken in the 60's. I mostly remember it as the place where I used to upset other students by playing ELP on the record player in the common room.
I lived down south for a few years and was suprised when on revisiting my old childhood haunts when I returned that not only had the house gone but all the rest of the sixth form as well.

This thread is headed 'Holt House Abbetdale'.
Abbeydale Grange School has not, or had not, anything to do with Holt House.
In the 1950s Abbeydale Grange School was a very, good girls only school. Young woman educated there, did not look for a job, they were asked if they would consider taking the job. Holt House was in the 1960s a junior school I think it is now serves for respite care for families with handicaped children. (I may well be wrong).

When I was at Abbeydale there were some strange things happened in the six form centre, it was a very old building and I never saw anything myself, but never felt comfortable in there whilst alone, it was strange really but quite creepy.:suspect:

Abbeydale Grange school comprised
Lower school on Hastings road
Upper school by the playing fields off CarterKnowle road
The sixth form which comprised the Grange [which burnt down] vehicle access off Abbeydale road. Several prefabs which had the science rooms and canteen and other classrooms. A brick built gym. Holt House that was a large old house where for a time they had music lessons. There was also a library built near Lower school.
Holt House became derelict in the 80's after being use as an adult education centre, as I can remember clamberingr around in the placeThe vehicle access for this place was up a long drive that came up from the bottom of Bannerdale road. As you went up the drive if you looked to theleft there were some cottages where the caretaker of the infant school lived. These have been knocked down and is now a centre for handicapped kids called Rushey meadow i think. A few yards on and still looking up to the left and you'll see Holt House infant school a single storey long building probably built in the late 50's.

When I was at Holt House Infant School in the early seventies, we used to watch the Rushey Meadow place being built.

If you carried on up the drive, you came to the actual Holt House itself, which at that time was indeed used by Abbeydale Grange comprehensive school.

Thanks for the link ceegee, I've just been looking around at that site and have come across two pics featuring youngish looking teachers that I remember although when I knew them they were a bit older, Linstead and Ramsbottom

G.F.Linstead (George) was the music critic of the Halle concerts in the 60's at Sheffield City Hall for the old Morning Telegraph.

Probably just the ghost of me having a tormented violin lesson in 1978. How I loathed those times.

Thanks for the link Ceegee - my Mum was at this school in the 1930s and she loved it and although I went right next door to Abbeydale Girls Grammar in the 50s, there was so much foliage around the Grange buildings that I never spotted the old houses.
