View Full Version : Broken glass and cut paws...
Is it just me, or is this getting to be a big problem? Okay, I live in a student populated area so it's worse here, and it could be down to the season, but there are broken bottles and glasses left in the park, and a phone box has been smashed twice in as many weeks.
Eddy's pad has only just healed from when he kicked some glass and now Takara's laid up having stood on glass this morning other than being practically carried out for a wee tonight she hasn't been out since this morning.
She's bled through two lots of bandages and all over the floor, has been laid shaking from shock tonight and finally wouldn't get off my knee to go for a wee.
It's just not on. We shouldn't have to worry about whether there's glass on the floor. Takara behaves fine offlead and shouldn't have to be kept on a lead just so that I know where she's stepping.
Sorry rant over.

if she has bled through 2 lots of bandages then i would think she may need a stitch to stop the bleeding. I know what you mean about the glass though its ridiculous
Poor thing! We have the same thing round our way. Behind my house is a car park to Rother Valley and the idiots there lob out beer bottles. My poor cat has come home several times with a cut paw, one needing stitches and copious visits to the vet to get it rebandaged after she had removed said bandages.
We had only had Albert 3 days before he stepped on glass and ended up having to have an operation and a nail removed. Is a nightmare we have glass all over the place in woodhouse sometimes you just can't avoid it. Was tempted to get doggy boots hehe but was told that was ridiculous imagine having to put them on before each walk lol

KATIEB_23 08-01-2007, 10:30 I totally agree with you Lotti - round here the glass problem is terrible! Some idiots seem to think it's fun to get all the bottles from the glass recycling point in a pub carpark & smash them all over the park. After Gadget's injury (which needed stitches to two badly slashed pads and 2wks of recovery time) we are scared to let him offlead near our house, so have taken to driving out to Graves Park every weekend cos at least its nice & litter free there.
I love it at Graves Park but its sad that the only place we can let our dog roam freely without the worry of injury is a 10-minute drive away
Thanks guys,
Some of those stories sound very bad! I didn't know they could stitch pads at the vets and I was waiting to see how she was today due to the ridiculous £100 consultation fee for Sundays.
Well, the good news is, she's a lot better, the bleeding has stopped and she's hobbling around the house (completely forgot herself when the postman came though!)
The bad news is, she has refused to wee when I took her out and insisted it hurt more and she needed carrying home. I've never known Takara to refuse to move!
I went to boots to try and get some hibiscrub to bathe it in but they don't have any so we're stuck with what we've got. The good thing is, for now it looks like we don't need to see the vet. Takara will be pleased!
It's such a pain because I don't have time before work to take them anywhere else, and because I can't walk far, if we do go any further afield, we have to take the car and often end up stuck in traffic.
I thought about getting doggy boots too Adz but knew they'd get the mick taken out of them (not to mention they'd probably lose the boots while running about!)
MuteWitness 08-01-2007, 12:52 just for future Lotti
Peak Vets at woodseats - http://www.peakvets.co.uk/ open sunday normally
KATIEB_23 08-01-2007, 14:14 I wouldn't bother with boots Lotti - unless they are a much better design than the 'Mikki' boots we got at the vet... They were a complete waste and more bother than good. They were fine for about 10sec then as soon as Gadget walked/ran they were coming loose, flapping about etc.
The best thing the vet suggested was to bathe in salt water twice a day & keep the paw dry and clean.
I found that a balloon actually stayed on better for keeping Gadget's paw dry than the Mikki boots! :loopy:

You live in Crookes don't you Lotti? You can buy Hibbiscrub from Horse and Rider in Crookes at the back of the shop. probably a good idea to get a bottle in, it's good stuff. You will probably get some good stuff to use for bandages too as they sell ones for horses that stick to themselves so stay on better.
Glass not too much of a problem in our area luckily. Hope Takara gets better and the glass problem sorts itself out.
I'm sorry to hear Takara's laid up Lotti, I hope she mends quickly.
There's lots of glass in our park, just where we go in, from the hoodies who hang there in the evenings. Not only do I have the worry of The Chocadors pads being cut, but if it's a bit of beer bottle he tries to pick it up and chew it given the chance :help:.
I don't know where he gets his love of beer from though, must be his father :hihi:.
BobbyBunny 08-01-2007, 16:50 Sorry to hear about this Lotti :( Near my Mums house theres a football pitch and we used to walk our old dog Lucky there. One day I noticed she was limping when we got back and she had a really big piece of glass stuck in one of her pads. Its really stupid the way people throw things about, and something should be done about it.
Glad to her Takara's better though :)
Thanks Jess, I'll go up to horse and rider, that's where we got the vet wrap from that she's been wearing - it's great stuff. We bought it for Eddy to keep muck out of his cut pad and have now been using it for T. She's better without it now it's stopped bleeding because it's uncomfortable when she tries to walk with her foot bandaged up.
She does seem a lot better now but is still hobbling around. I estimate she'll want a short walk maybe tomorrow afternoon - but today she's not even asked to go out... very unlike her.
Poor Takara :(
Broken glass is one of my pet hates. It's EVERYWHERE on pavements. I've been lucky that I haven't come across it when Gypsy is off-lead, so I'm usually able to steer her round it. It does mean I have to be very vigilant, though... and remember where I've seen it for the walk home at night!
I keep saying I'll carry a little brush round with me (along with poo bags, extendable lead, clicker, treats, water, phone...) so that I can sweep it into the gutter when I come across it!

If you ask your vet there is some charcoal looking stuff that you can apply to animal wounds to stop them bleeding.
Also my mother used to put golf club covers on her grey hounds feet to protect them just a thought :)
Hope Takara makes a quick recovery hugs
Thanks babycakes...
Well I'm off to horse and rider tomorrow to get some hibiscrub because Takara has something black stuck in the gash...
I can't see whether it's coagulated blood or something's got in it so I'm not going to poke around in case it's coagulated blood and I make it bleed again.
I can't get it out - have already tried so hibiscrub tomorrow.
If this persists she'll definitely be having a vet visit. I don't want long lasting damage to occur, particularly at her age.
I know someone who's a keen golf player and might just have some old covers so will ask him - thanks for the heads up babycakes.
We stuck a pad in the bottom of a poo bag and black taped it round his leg. look ridiculous lol but worked. Poor albert we do humiliate him.
Hope you feel better soon Takara

We put a sock on our old dogs foot once when he cut his paw. Whenever he had the sock on he would limp and look sorry for himself and give you puppy dog eyes as though he was really hurting. When you took it off he walked perfectly normal and completely forgot about his poorly paw!
hehe gempud. I've not put a bandage on Takara again since it's stopped bleeding because dogs' paws naturally spread when they tread on them so bandaging them up so they can't spread must be uncomfortable for them.
