View Full Version : Great Expectations
sauerkraut 22-09-2004, 09:52 Having lived in Germany for several years I'm pondering returning to Sheffield with my family. We'd appreciate some views on the best areas to live and the best schools. We'd be looking to rent somewhere with min. 4 bedrooms + garden, max. 750 p.m., ideally near countryside or at least a park, and with good public transport. We're used to a quiet, family-friendly area - doors left on the latch, neighbours popping in to borrow cups of sugar, kids free to roam safely all day with minimal supervision. Is this idyll available anywhere in Sheffield or are we better off staying where we are?!!
neeeeeeeeeek 22-09-2004, 10:27 Come on over, its great. I am sure you will get a nice 4 bed house for that sort of cash, as long as you don't need a roof. The area should be quiet, the wildlife has long since been poisoned, just the relaxing sound of fireworks and off road bikes with no exhausts. You can leave you doors unlocked, less likely to get them kicked in that way when the neighbours pop round to rob your video to sell for bag of scag. Your kids can roam safely across the park in the back of that stolen ford escort. The schools are great, never any trouble as long as your kids remember that the teachers can be accused of harassment. And best of all we have a tram that goes to meadowhell for all your shopping joy. :D

What a great reply if you dont like sheffield why dont you move to another area- but then again you may moan again!!
Everywhere has bad points but sheffield has ALOT of good points if you want to see them- the peak district, the ok house market (not like for eg london, bristol, manchester) the people are not that bad and I personally quite like living here.
Not sure what it would be like for a family but if you find the right place that is right for you surely you can create your own idyllic life- granted you wont be able to leave your door unlocked but then again I never would - however if you live in a quieter area like i do my nieghbours regularly come over and we chat over garden fences.

Norton area of Sheffield adjoining to Graves Park might have something to your budget. Last house my mate went to view was a 3 bed detached for £550 a month so you should be in for some luck (if anything is available).
Try Mike Jolly Estates (use google)
sauerkraut 23-09-2004, 14:25 Thanks for the tip. Will have a look. From websites we've looked at so far there doesn't seem to be too much shortage of 4-bed property in our price range (needn't necessarily be detached) but we're not sure of areas. E.g. have seen houses in Dore, Stannington, Fulwood etc. Any opinions?

- These are all family-type areas. Not too bad. Some areas of Stannington and Fulwood are open to woodland, you need to look closely to where your house is based. Dore is definitely a nice area ! Kinda pricy as well.
Based on what you say, I will recommend Dore to you. It's kind of outside of Sheffield, near the Peak District area. So if you are into the British "village" type rural setting in the great outdoor, then I guess Dore is for you. It's just not so accessible to local transports. Unless u take the train ? not sure what the schooling is like.
Best schools. I don't think Sheffield is *all* that in terms of good schools in England. There are (I think, unsure now) six 6-form schools in Sheffield. I think living in Fulwood and Stannington may allow your kid to attend one of these school.
Hope that helps.
sauerkraut 01-10-2004, 06:39 Thanks for the ideas. We're over on a fact-finding trip at the end of the month so will have a look at some of the areas then.

Did you regret it ? Are you still here?
espadrille 25-07-2008, 11:49 Maybe not...
