I was just watching Click Online on the news channel. Aparrantly, the people of Paris have a brilliant, new idea for the entire city to communicate.

Its innovative because instead of talking to people all over the world online, as the internet seems to be primarily used for, the Parisians can talk to people from Paris! Not only that, they can buy and sell things to each other, advertise events and meet ups!

Isnt at an amazing idea? Its only a few months old, but they say its BOUND to catch on!

Erm...

How long has SF been in existance...?

it's totally different from SF. Read the article online instead.

Basically its the same though. Just a little tweaking and theyd be the same. Sf got there first, I reckon click ought to be told and an article done about it.
Actually I might email the buggers.

No, it really is completely different. http://www.peuplade.fr/actu/ - register and see for yourself (you need to know some french).

I was bored and so read through this thread and then just for the hell of it decided to send click an e-mail mentioning how a similar idea has been up and running in Sheffield UK for quite some time.
Be interesting to see if I get a response

What are the similarities between Peuplade and SF?

I'm just going on what the article has stated such as
It allows people in the same area to get in touch with one another
They arrange meet ups
They allow you to be as open or as secretive as you wish which then hopefully means no discrimination
It allows you to swap info on bars, cafes and the like
As I last did French about thirty years ago the site itself is a bit of a non starter for me but there are similarities in my opinion.

What are the similarities between Peuplade and SF?

Erm., they are both city forums, they both offer a linkage between service providers and possible customers, and a place to chat before you meet. Those appear to be similarities.

Obviously the fact that its all in french is quite dissimilar to SF

SF has been running for over 3 years and is fabulous, Peuplade hasn't and isn't. :D

I think the general idea seems to be the same. However, I've used other 'forums' elsewhere which has a 'community' feel to it anyway. So, in an odd way, it's not the first idea that came out of nowhere. A lot of online communities have themes behind them like an interest or hobby. i.e. gaming, work, sports etc. The Paris one seems to be slightly more geared towards services, than meeting people. It's based on a city. Which is the same as the SF. True. I do feel that there is a slight difference between SF and Peuplade is that, the forum layout here is more for 'chat' purposes. Than encouraging people to actually meet up. Whereas on the Peuplade website, there are facilities and function for people to meet up. People in the SF makes the effort themselves and off their own accord to arrange meets, whereas (as far as I see it), the Peuplade website is built to encourage people to meet. Subtle differences, but a big one at that.

Anyway, even if I didn't become a member on the SF, I feel that Sheffield has that kind of real community feel anyway. Bit villagey at times, but having lived here for years. I've just come to realise the city has always been like that.
