I didn't live in the Walkley area but spent plenty of time on Providence Rd with family there, my Grandfather use to sit for hours on the stone wall opposite the library, he was always the first person we saw when we got offf the tram at the end of South Rd.

We no longer live in Sheffield but my wife lived on Daniel Hill street along with her brother Jack and sister Myrna (named Loy). Father in law Jack Loy used to go in the Blake pub as his local...long time ago though I,m talking 50s/60s.
My wife,s maiden name was Jose Loy, lots of her relations lived around the streets you mentioned.

Hi
Know both areas very well. The Library is still there at the end of South Rd but flats [what else !] have been built where the hoardings used to be.
New housing has been built in place of the terraced housing that use to make up these old streets.
Used to play on the "bomb buildings" i.e. botttom of Bloor St and used to make Winter Warmers from the clay on Daniel Hill

I used towork with a lad from Walkley who lived on Providence Road.

His name is Pete Short, I often wondered if he was still around.

He'll be in his early 70's now.

Does anyone know of him?

Happy Days!

My maiden name was Barnes and the families that lived there at that particular time were the Whiteheads, Glaves, and a family called Wharton had the shop down the road. At the bottom of Compton Street there was a shop that we used to call the Dairy and that was run by a family called the Seniors. I attended Bole Hill School and was christened at St Mary's church on South Road and I attended Ebenezer Sunday School.

My Aunty Annie had a shop on the corner of Compton Street and Bell Hagg Road in the 50's, I don't remember much about it other than being shouted at for being near the sweets when I was let anywhere near them. I am searching family history and also looking for local photographs if anyone out there has any. We lived on Walkley Crescent but I went to Morley Street but all my pals went to Bolehill School. I was told that I went to Morley Street because I was a good swimmer and they had the best facilities. Dont know if that is true or not.

The South Rd 95 turned up Highton St. and along Camm St, where it would wait until it was time to set off from the South Rd terminus.

I remember often catching the 95 into town and the 52 to school. We used to moan if we got to the bus stop (not having checked any timetable) and a bus didn't arrive for 10 minutes. These days (away from Sheffield) we are lucky if there is one in an hour and that meanders around every back street it can find before really setting off to our destination. Trains here are the more convenient transport but, in Sheffield, I had hardly ever used the train. I was there after the original trams and before the new lot so don't know how reliable and useful they are.

Didn't I hear that, at one time, Sheffield had the second biggest bus fleet in the country after London?

The first 3 years of my life was spent in Walkley on Strand Street, which I believe was knocked down to make way for a new development (please correct me if I'm wrong). I have vague memories of it being just off a main road which was a hill down to one of the major roads.

The 39 kellys, shows Strand St. between 66 and 104 King James St. but doesn't show it on the index of streets.
There is also Majuba St. at 178 King James St. which again isn't in the index listing.
I'd never heard of either. Majuba sounds like somewhere in the colonies or somewhere we fought in the Boar war.

Can anyone tell me where Creswick Street was at Walkley?
Creswick Street was at the bottom of Carr Rd on the corner is the Belle View Pub. Used to live at 144 before emigrating to NZ in the late sixties. Not surprised they demolished the whole area. The only good thing left are the memories of the people that lived there.

Used to be a good chippy where Camm Street met Heavygate Road :)

One of my old neighbours ran this chippy in the few years before it closed 'Rachel'
Also remember the corner shop at the end of Camm St too.

Great chippy though!

Bit harsh that trevorm-I live close by the bottom of Carr Rd and Walkley still has a good community.

Have a look at www.picturesheffield.com Put a search in for Walkley.
There are over 200 pictures of that area. Not sure there would be any aerial photos. Should be some that would interest you.
