View Full Version : Best TV Theme Tune
supergran was a good one sang by billy connolly still got it i think:hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
but the best one i can think of is the tales of the unexpected as a young lad of the 70s seeing the naked woman dancing in the fire had a very nice affect on me:) :) :)
Lickable 22-09-2004, 06:27 My Favs would have to be...
American gothic, Carnivale and that new Deadwod that started over on Sky one last night.
I also love all the Star Trek themes, and yes.. even Enterprise. :P
Happy Days theme, I love singing along to that. Drunk obviously!! would never listen to it otherwise :suspect:
DeeJ
A.B.Yaffle 22-09-2004, 07:22 Its got to be Quincy! lol
It has to be Ron Grainger's 1963 score in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop of the original Dr who theme music.
A groundbreaking piece of electronica still recognised today as being a pioneering piece of music.
Alltogether now "woooooooo , oooooooooooooooo"
Lickable 22-09-2004, 07:35 Ooooh, how could i forget? Diagnosis Murder!!! Doo doo de doo doo, de doooo dooooooo. Doo doo de doo doo de doooo doooooo... you get the picture :D

alchresearch 22-09-2004, 22:26 Miami Vice. I thought that theme tune was (and still is) soooooo cool!
I think the best theme tune at the minuite has to go to: Sopranos!
FOR THOSE OF A CERTAIN AGE...
Minder (that funky slap bass kicks ass)
No, Honestly
Banana Splits (The Dickies version was better)
Swap Shop (oo-er, really showing my age here)
Pipkins (there I go again)
but saves face with...
Six Feet Under (gloriously weird)
funkyukgal 23-09-2004, 02:41 why hasnt anyone said eastenders yet??? :D

Cos Eastenders is crap.
Can anyone remember though, the song Anita Dobson had in the charts called "anyone can fall in love" sung to the tune of the Eastenders theme?
I have an MP3 of it, it's quite a decent song, heard it on Top of the Pops 2 ages ago and downloaded it.
On topic though, my picks would have to be...
Knightmare
Old style Neighbours theme
The Bill
All the Star Treks inc Enterprise
Dallas
Dynasty
Crossroads (old ones not the pants remake)
Anyone remember Juliet Bravo? excellent theme tune!

Yeah that did rule, as far as I remember it was sort of a pre-cursor to The Bill wasn't it?
Similar kind of thing anyway, drama thingy about Police.
It was very much like the bill, a police drama in which the main character was a woman. I was only young when it used to come on and always thought Juliet Bravo was her name!
Only really used to watch the beginning and the end though for the music.

mega_monty 25-09-2004, 22:31 I used to like Knight Rider theme music, recently had that for my mobile phone ringtone.
oh and Terrahawks had a pretty funky tune to it, when they did the noughts and crosses bit

You have GOT to be joking about the Anita Dobson song?
andy1702 25-09-2004, 23:52 The Buffy The Vampire Slayer theme is one of my favourites.
But the best one of all is for the American show 'Do-Over'. Not only is it a great track, but I met the girl who sings it one dark night in Cambridge;)
Ahhh..... The memories!:D
As a kid I used to like 'The Professionals' theme tune.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/ilove/tv/titles/grangehill.shtml
the flashing blade
belle et sebastian
white horses
...just thought of another one I'd almost forgotten about. The old (very old) b&w Robinson Crusoe theme, recently used on an advert. Anyone know what that piece of music was called? I wouldn't mind that one on mp3.
What about Crown Court [1973-1984]? Very ominous theme, that one. Also springing to mind is Auf Wiedersehen Pet theme from third series set partly in USA. I agree with Ant here regarding the old, black and white Robinson Crusoe theme. If I remember correctly, it was a German series with English sub-titles, regularly repeated in school holiday period during the early 70s. Marvellous, stirring stuff.
Has to be the cricket, makes you think there is something exciting coming on and it is only the bloody cricket.

Oh yes! The most fantastic children's tv programme ever - The Flashing Blade! I can remember the feelings of excitement and expectation generated by that thrilling theme tune! Wonderful stuff.
I'd love to see it again - but I have a horrible feeling that, from an adult's perspective, it would be so camp as to be almost unwatchable!! :D

PS Love the Buffy theme as well - so fabulously gothic

Yodameister 04-11-2004, 12:56 Red Dwarf, the intro music from Series 1 and 2.
Also like The Young Ones theme, and Mastermind (really goes well with the show and the intro visuals)
Airwolf anybody
Possibly the GREATEST ever theme tune was during the 80's. It accompanied ITV's 'The Big Match' every weekend.
I think it was so popular that they used it for the world cup too - have a listen, how many memories does this bring back!!

Loved the Auf Weidersehen pet thingy by Mark Knopfler (Why Aye Man) and from the 80's, does anyone remember 'Big Deal?' I think Bobby Gubba (Bobby G) from Bucks Fizz wrote and sang the theme tune.
Ghosthunter 08-11-2004, 15:59 I used to like the theme from The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy

g_spaceman 17-12-2004, 19:06 Dawson's Creek
Red Dwarf
The Office
Hmm lets see I allways liked
Tales of the Unexpected ... with the woman dancing sillouhetted in the flames at the beginning
Sweeney - With the gold car coming down the road
muddycoffee 19-12-2004, 22:55 I love the Gang show theme from It aint half hot mum. You could never get away with a line like "we are here to make you feel gay" in a modern song.
The theme from Hill street blues, and the one from Taxi were classics. As was the Benny hill Show's Yakkety Sax tune.
Professionals and sweeny. What great tunes they are. I have used the sweeny once in the end of a song I did with a band, it always raised a big cheer when it came on.
I have a very fond rememberence of the theme tune from painting with nancy, it had a constant violin note which sustained throughout the whole tune.
The Persuaders.
Tales of the unexpected
Steptoe & Son. (Very Clever & descrpitive)
Poldark
& others
Steptoe & son and
Fawlty towers
Does anyone remember 'The Red Hand Gang' a early 80's kids drama, with 5 American schoolkids solving mysteries. It had a wicked theme tune, I remember humming it all day long after watching it.
Yodameister 21-12-2004, 10:03 Not sure if this one has been mentioned

and goes really well with the opening titles too.

Crikey yeah that's one that worms it's way into your brain, and NEVER comes out.. lol
One of the kids played a funny little flute thing, was it called a nose flute? I could never understand why most of them had bikes to get around quickly, and there's one kid with a little skateboard ?? Why bother, he could never keep up with the others. Even though the scenes used to start with them arriving together. Bonkers!

Me too she had a lovely womanly arse
I know it was mainly on the radio, but Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy is a very memorable, strange and haunting tune.
Yodameister 22-12-2004, 09:47 Not necessarily the best theme, but in terms of how well it goes with the show I think the original Grange Hill theme tune was pretty good.
mine was ,journey to the unknown.
For those who want to listen to their favourite tune this has some, I have hammerd the A-team tune to bits.
Tv theme tunes (http://www.retrojunk.com/media/49/)
Doctor Who theme rocks.
Very haunting, especially the later generations, from Tom Baker onwards.

I don't agree with that. They are quite different interpretations, I can sometimes prefer either one depending on the mood I'm in.
And the film theme is slightly different again.
Ousetunes 31-01-2005, 15:05 Pretty much agree with what you've already said. That is, Tales of the Unexpected, Black Beauty, Minder (which makes me think of the smell of KFC. I used to watch it in our friends' KFC shop in Firth Park) and Hill Street Blues.
What was the Ski Sunday music? I too like the jamaican music to Test Match Special, reminds me of of England getting battered by the likes of Viv Richards and Clive Lloyd!
What about Armchair Thriller, with the screaming bloody face sliding down the armchair. Eeeeeeeeck, that used to have me bricking it.
last year i put together a cd for myself and some mates....has about 90 tracks of the best tv themes on.. its fantastic fun!!!!
baywatch theme (by survivor.......eye of the tiger blokeys)

On the subject of the Thundercats theme... remember the 411 song 'Fun to Get Some' released over the summer? For weeks I thought the chorus to that went Dumb Dumb diggi-diggi-di dumb di-dumb and I knew it would be Thundercat Song  :P

Something like that anyway.. Sorry Mods I know we're not supposed to post "adult" material but it was just a joke.
metalman 08-10-2005, 20:02 Some of the ones I like that haven't been mentioned:
The Prisoner (another Ron Grainer effort, and a totally classic series - probably the best TV prog ever made IMO)
UFO (the Gerry Anderson series)
And I always used to find the theme tune to A Family at War particularly depressing when my parents used to watch it (I'm showing my age here, I know). Can't remember much about the actual programme though except there was an old bloke with a moustache called Sefton and I think by the end of virtually all his family had been wiped out in the war in one way or another. Cheerful it wasn't.
