View Full Version : Are you friends with your cat?
bensonhedges 07-01-2007, 00:54 I'v had 4 or 5 cats over the years and all have been friendly to some degree. However my current cat, Diva, has been much less friendly than all the others until recently whan she has started to sit on my knee much more and purr more than she did before. I certainly haven't behaved any differently towards her. Weird. Is your cat friends with you?
Was she from the RSPCA or similar?
Many cats will take time before they will trust you and start wanting a fuss again - especially if they have been distressed in the past for whatever reason - others just will just treat you with contempt until they want something... :)
Of course. Merlin curls up on the desk next to me when I'm working, and Jesse follows me around like a little shadow.
Diva has obviously only just made up her mind that you're a fairly decent bloke. These things take time  .
BobbyBunny 07-01-2007, 01:02 Any cat I've ever had has never been friendly, because I'm so scared of them I have a nervous breakdown when one tries to sit on my knee

I love my cat loads and he's very friendly towards me too, verymuch a lap cat!
I was never friends with our old cat, Adolf. I was always scared of her and although she slept on the end of my bed, and I missed her dearly when we lost her, I was too scared to become good friends with her. She was a bit feral...
Smudge and I have always been close and she used to come and cheer me up when she knew I was upset but since moving downstairs, Smitch has adopted me and as Smitch and Smudge hate eachother, Smudge tends to stay away, although she's been a more regular visitor recently.
Smitch was always a very non plussed cat - she never wanted much company, but as we speak she's laid by side - I'm in bed - meowing at me for attention :) I'm just getting to know her, after so long - they're both nearly 10 now and I'm loving it. They're finally getting to a stage where they'll come to me despite the other cat being there.
I can safely say I'm friends with my cats :)
Yellowrose 07-01-2007, 09:55 Both my cats are very friendly with me and regard me as their mummy. They both sit on my knee, but not usually at the same time, and sometimes there is a dispute. They reach a compromise with on on knee the other on the top of the chair above my shoulder. But thats usually when the kids go to bed.
Garth, the large white one will get on my knee sometimes when Im nursing the baby though, he's done it since she was tiny. She snuggles her little feet in his fur ... would love a photo but if I move so does the cat!
johnbradley 07-01-2007, 10:18 i love my cats.
basil's the dribbling lap cat, fairly self interested but will just flop down and sleep/dribble on you at any opportunity.
tubby is really cute, always jumps up to meet your hand with her back, and although independent, pretty matey.
amber, the mum of the other two, got rescued from a crap sh#thole and has been recovering ever since. quite timid and distant...but sweet if she's in the mood to say hello.
I only meant to have one cat though...but having three can be fun, especially if they all go out hunting/defending their patch together:)

Oooh! Another Basil.
Yes I am. My cats follow me around the house. When I'm in the room where the computer is Ted sleeps on the printer. Basil yells at me to go to bed so she can snuggle up. As soon as i get on the sofa, Ted jumps on my knee or yells at me to play with her. Infact I've been up since 8 and this is the first time I've not seen them since.
Closer investigation finds them asleep having pulled a towel off the rail and have snuggled up within it together - aw!
My cat blows hot and cold and usually changes his opinion of me once every couple of years. He's either really loving and wants to be in the same room as you and attention seeking, or he disappears for days on end and when he does come home couldn't care less about anyone human and just goes and sleeps.
Any cat I've ever had has never been friendly, because I'm so scared of them I have a nervous breakdown when one tries to sit on my knee
You met one of my cats didn't you:confused: I'm sure you didn't panic... or have I totally forgotten lol
Apart from Tetley, who had been abused before I got him and desperately wanted to be everyone's best mate, but was afraid to relax apart from with me, and Baby, who is a hand reared feral monster and only talks to me, everyone coming to my house has always had at least one purry furry wanting to sit on them, sit near them, make eye contact and blink with them etc etc.
When I'm on the forum I usually have all 4 that I have at the moment all round me in my recliner- Arthur round my neck, Merlin on my right side, Tiffy on my left side, and Baby between my knees.
I love my cats! :) all three of them. They are all rescue cats, one from Sheffield RSPCA and the other 2 from Thornberry and i'm definatlry their mummy!!
I can't do anything without all 3 of them behind me!
I can't even have a wee! :hihi:
There are sometimes scraps for who gets to sit with me so we have to take it in turns
Alfies very possessive over me and comically will block my elsest cat, Zippy's path so he can't get to me, Zippy just swipes him! :hihi:
I don't know what i'd do without them....x
I was great friends with my previous cat Molly, until she found out it isnt a good idea to make friends with a 4x4 at 30mph.
We found her lost when she was only a few months old, and looked after her until we returned her to her 'owners'. and about 5 years later, there she is, sitting on our door step, she didnt come in, but was always around our garden. And of course, we played with her, and then one winters evening we opened the door and she bolted in, after that she adopted us, and only went to her 'owners' for food.
At the start we kicked her out at night, because she wsnt our cat, but eventualy she wouldent leave - so we put a flap in for a cat that wasnt even ours!
Then her owners came over one night, and said, 'We are moving house in 2 days, do you want to keep her?', and my heart hit the floor because i thought they would say no, but they said yes!!
so we gained a cat!
Me and her where the best of friends, she was really protective of me, and followed me everywhere - sometimes down the road to the bus stop - she never tried to get on! she never really liked being stroked, but had to sit on my knee or next to me.
she was a wonderfull little kitty!
But my current cat, Queenie (scaramouche wouldent fit on the tag) is my friend, but not to the same degree. she is a rescue cat we adopted from the sheffiield cats shelter, at the start she wouldent trust anyone, she came form a house of 20+ cats and was one of the last to be rehomed because she was a little 'tricky'.
it took about 6 months for her to warm to me, i spent nights in some funny places with her, and she still dosent like anyone else picking her up.
but anyone and strok her - shes not that fussy anymore!
but she is still rather insecure, and will hide under the smallest furniture she can. she spends 80% of her time in my bedroom, sleeping and playing, but its not the same relationship as i had with Molly. Queenie has to sleep on my bed with me, she gets very annoyed if she cant, and will wake me up to get me to move!
They are both very special cats, and i nolonger see tham as cats, they are another member of my family. And she knows me, if i come home stressed she will be stright on my knee. and when i was ill, she did know because she didnt once ask me to follow her or get her food - she knew i couldent.
Cats are amazing little things, i cant imagine my life with out one.
Me and my cat are bestest friends, and she too knows when I need cheering up.
When Mr Scoop first came to live with us, she hated him and wouldn't come in when he was in. This went on for about three years until I had a miscarriage, she knew I needed all the love I could get and she and Mr Scoop put their differences behind them that day and have never looked back.
I have four cats
Mozart (my avatar) is currently on my lap and follows me everywhere. No doubt that he is my cat, or to be more precise, that I am his human.
Hanni - the youngest - is everybodies cat, when she isn't playing with one of the others
Poppy - next youngest is mostly the other half's cat, when she is anybodies. She is very affectionate but only really comes to me for food. She is Hanni's best mate and the two of them spend an awful lot of time grooming each other. She used to be attached to me like glue but when she was 11 months old she had a nasty accident and spent 3 weeks at the vet. Since then, she has become more of the other half's cat.
Robin is the oldest, like Mozart, a rescue cat and she is 14. She has never been a particularly friendly cat. She is very much her own cat, coming to sit on you but not with you, if you see what I mean. Whilst the others will share a lap, if that is what they have in mind, Robin's first instinct is to see off all comers. Sometimes she will let you brush her, sometimes stroke her and, rarely, pick her up. She came from a home where she was the only cat of a childless couple who, when she was 5, had a child and disposed of the cat.

Im sorry to hear of your miscarriage, but its circumstances like this which prove that cats really do understand human emotion, wonderfull little ones arnt they!
Jabberwocky 07-01-2007, 16:05 My cat adores me.
At meal times, hes my best friend!
The rest of the time, Im a mobile scratching post and litter tray.

a year later, when I was heavily pregnant I had to have the midwife round to see me. I shan't go into detail, but I was laid on my back and the midwife was doing something to me that was very painful, my cat bless her came and sat on my chest and alternated between purring into my face and then turning round to glare at the midwife!
She's 13 years old now and I'm hoping that she's going to be one of those cats that lives to a ripe old age.

I'm so pleased to hear that she's doing so well and has done the typical cat trick of falling on her feet by finding you!
I have one of her old house mates BTW- my big white lad Arthur came from the same intake at the Shelter. How's that for a coincidence?

she sounds like a wonderfull cat, seems that she really does love you!! they always know what is best, i dont know how, but they do!
my kitty loves to sit on my belly while im sitting up in bed, but when i was ill it would have been painful if she did. But she never sat there, just seemed to know that it would hurt me, lovely kitty.

Baby was alright with me the other day.
I have 2 and they can be variable on the friendly front, though one is stupid and throws herself at your feet if she wants to be friends.

OM*G it was between those two, her original name was Reebok, but that was rather chav so we changed it!
but WOW, thats made my week!
hows he going on?! he was a lovely one, it was a hard choice betwwen the two!

That's cos you're a sensible person and followed the feral cat rules- ie. pretend they don't exist until they feel comfortable enough to approach you, and then don't do anything loud or scary, make big movements, make eye contact or attempt to pick them up while they check you out.

He's lovely- he's the one who lies round my neck in my recliner most of the day. He'll be 14 this year, so he's starting to look a bit gnarly, but he's a lovely lad and in fine fettle.
Send me in a lovely piccie and a letter to the Shelter- I do their newsletter and I'm always looking for good photos for the letters page.
Custardcreme 07-01-2007, 16:49 my cat just sleeps and only likes my mum :S
One day, a pair of Kleeneze people turned up trying to sell the pyramid selling thing. We had a hell of a job getting them to go, one in particular being really persistent. When they got up and turned to go out the door, we spotted something they hadn't. The backs of their dark suits were all white and hairy. Mozart had been sitting on the settee before they arrived and rubbed all round them while they were there. They now sported white mohair backs to their suits. We said nothing and Mozie sat there with a "wasn't I a clever boy" look on his face :hihi:
