View Full Version : Moving to Sri-Lanka
Hi,
I've been thinking of moving home ...
Either to Ecclessal Road / Hunters Bar or Sri Lanka (probably the latter).
I've been on holiday there before and it's a beautiful place and Sri Lankan women seemed to like tall blonde English gentlemen (me). The beaches are cool too and it's sunny.
Does anyone know anyone who has gone to live there?
What kind of things should one consider before 'selling up and shipping out' ... !?
Yours Seriously,
Jamie.
Have you thought about immigration implications ?? Can you emigrate there ? Are there any conditions etc ?
Have a read through this Sri Lanka Immigration (http://www.immigration.gov.lk/) Could be useful
You had enough of the Sheffield life then ? :suspect:
neeeeeeeeeek 21-09-2004, 19:41 Until the point in time where you meet a rich Sri Lankan babe to keep you in the style in which you have become accustomed, what are you going to do for cash? Will your current programming skills keep a roof over your head? Can I come?:D

My cash (savings) will be worth much more over there ... and so will my earnings (assuming I get paid in sterling).
Plus ... I can work remotely anywhere I want to (so long as I can get online).
DaBouncer 22-09-2004, 02:01 Dude get to the states.
They speak English, they accept UK nationals to move over.
Sterling is worth more, and the women love English guys (speaking from experience).
It's a great way of life and you're never bored!
Moon Maiden 22-09-2004, 06:55 Flippin eck Jamie...you don't do things by halves do you. I cannot offer any real advice...just lots of shocked gibberish
Moon
Don't do it.
I could never come for a beer in Colombo.
Stick to Ecclesall Road.
Don't forget that it's open season on Brits East of Austria at the moment and probably will remain so for several years to come....
On a serious note - savings run out - what's your contingency plan for after that?
Cheers,
Joe
Lickable 22-09-2004, 07:33 You only live once, do what you really want to.
You only get old once too. What do you want to think about when your old? How you had so many options, yet wasted them all, or how great those years were, where you did all them things you often dreamed of?
Jeez
Seems a bit extreme, its not like going to France or Spain is it?
Whilst it may be a nice place to for a holiday. living there would be a different story.
Heat
Monsoons
Culture
Religion
Seems to be more people going to Goa, if you want to do it go for it.
Contact Arthur C Clarke, he went there many, many years ago and is still there, unless he's died which I hadn't heard about.

Thanks DaBouncer,
I had considered the US (maybe Kentucky).
Do you need to have some kind of job offer for them to accept you? (I would be working as a contracter / self-employed).

Well Moon Maiden,
I think so long as you research something well enough before commiting to it ... then give it everything you have ... burning your bridges behind you as you go ... it should make for interesting living at least.

Hey Joe,
Nah it's ok ... they do have beer in Sri-Lanka so you'll be well safe as houses mate (assuming you're cool with the 10 hour flight there ... oh and the 10 hour back ... best make a weekend of it eh?).
That goes for the rest of you too, pop round for a tea and biscuit or a beer anytime!
Hmmm ... I hadn't considered that I may be a target for some terrorist organisation.
On the financials ... I would be doing pretty much the same as I am now ... apart from that it would be on a lappy on an exotic beach with the ocean lapping at my feel and beautiful sri-lankan chicks bringing me things.
No seriously ... I really did like the sri-lankan culture / way of life and the people are beautiful and the energy of the place was amazing.
Comparing that to England ... hmm.

 Bit of a difference from Sri Lanka
Kentucky - Inbred country
Come for the Bluegrass -- Stay for the Incest!
Shallowest gene pool in the Union
Apologies in advance fo anyone from Kentucky

Completely agree with you.
Look at what opportunities are available around you and make the most of them.
Much better to do something and take a risk and make it work ... than to be a timid safe little mouse.

I've been to both Goa and Sri-Lanka and Goa was awful (IMHO) ... dirty unhygenic extreme povery beggers ... Sri-Lanka is much nicer.
Heat: No problem, I can get air-con.
Monsoons: Bit of rain never hurt anyone, it's fun.
Culture: Is much better than the UK yob culture.
Religion: Mainly buddism, which is cool.
Agent Orange 22-09-2004, 10:58 I say go for it if you really want to do it. It takes guts to go and something that will have such a huge impact on your life and you get my respect!! Besides, if it doesn't work out you can always come back to UK and that's not the end of the world is it!!! Me and my other are thinking of heading to Sri Lanka within the next year or so for a spot of backpacking and would be grateful if you could give me some advice etc.
My only concern about Sri Lanka is that it's not the most stable of countries what with the continuing threat of war with the temil tigers.
Mart.
Great place to have a holiday... but...
As a tourist you are kept away from the political unrest. There will always be trouble there because hatred is so deeply ingrained on many of the people. Tourists are always treated well because it is in the interest of the locals to do so. Move there and you'll find it a different story. The local babes will soon loose interest in you if they think that you're not their passport to London. And Tamils don't care much for blonde Europeans nicking their breeding stock.
The LTTE are listed as enemies of the US which is an invitation to insurgent terrorists especially as President Chandrika Kumaratunga is proving to be an inept peace maker and is currently struggling to maintain an already broken cease fire.
You've got to be mad mate, brave or stupid. Eccy might not be as sunny and may not have the beautiful beaches – but are the babes so much better than Eccy road’s selection that they’re worth treading on a terrorists toes for?

It's not only about the babes!
My experience of the locals was that they were a happy smiling bunch of people who enjoyed life (quite unlike the vast majority of miserable grumpy sods who live in the UK).
The energy of the place was amazing too and you could almost feel the electricity in the air.
I may not go ... but then again ... who knows.
My thinking is that if I can work from anywhere in the world (so long as I can get internet) and be paid well in Sterling ...
I may as well live somewhere where my money is worth much more and where there is a natural beauty and a good energy about the place.
EDIT:
That's not to say that what you said isn't well worthy of consideration, thanks Mr_E.
If you want a change mate, and you have no ties, go for a bit of a jet set lifestyle. There are ops all over the place for your expertise. Lucrative short term contracts are fun and you get to see the world. When you find somewhere or someone you'd like to settle with - stay.
Why not be a cyber nomad. It is a genuine occupation/vocation. Sell up buy a Hymer or such like and go! Just work when you need to and live a little the rest of the time.
