i have a 8 month old yorkshire terrier female and she appears to be having her first season.
the problem is she seems to have been in season for about 3 weeks now,her bits are inflammed but she is no long bleeding, her nipples are large and for some reason she keeps trying to mate with my lil boy kitten(she keeps sitting on him:o ):hihi:
anyway are these the normal signs, and how long before her nipples and bits go back to normal?
should i be worried about anything?
thanks
Hi Jody,
Takara was in season for about 5 weeks for her first season, so be prepared for it to take a little bit longer.
They generally stop after 4 weeks though.
If she's in her third week, this is when the bleeding stops/slows down and the bitch is more 'up for it' and trying to get the attention of the boys - the rest of the season they tend to refuse any advances from males.
Be prepared for the bleeding to start again for her last week, and after that, her nipples will go down slightly, but never back to the original size as usually, it's like puberty for us, the nipples tend to stay larger after they've had their first season.
Her bits should go down towards the end of the final week but remember to bath her when she's definitely finished and has to go out again - she'll still have some scent left on her and will still drive the boys crazy so, although a lot of people don't - it's worthwhile giving her a bath, imo.
Phantoms are not very common in a bitch's first season, but Takara had one - if this is the case, the nipples will stay large and the bitch will start showing more protective signs and maybe try mothering pillows etc.
Just keep an eye on her if she has a phantom, if she's not too distressed I wouldn't worry about a vet trip but if she's lactating - Takara didn't - and is distressed then you can get a drug that will minimise the symptoms of the phantom but it will also prolong it slightly too so sometimes it's worth letting them get through it themselves as it finishes sooner.
Hope this helps.
Edit to add - I wouldn't be worried from what you say but if, after she's finished she starts to get a yellowish discharge it can be a sign of pyo so you should see a vet asap.

Bitches are in season for about three weeks, their bits do become swollen,
but soon go back to normal, as for her nipples one of my bitches stayed that way, long after the season,in fact everyone thought she had, had puppies,
The vet told me it was her hormones playing up, similar to a phantom pregnancy, her body thought she had been mated, anyhow her next season
everything returned to normal after the three weeks.
I'm so glad mine is spayed and I never had to go through any of that!
