View Full Version : Does anyone remember the group The Fortunes pavlo1969 06-01-2007, 10:14 does any one remember the group The Fortunes in the 60's in Sheffield?????????????????????????????: Nigel Womersle 06-01-2007, 11:18 I remember them very well. You've got your troubles, I've got mine. Brilliant group of the mid sixties. Bruno 06-01-2007, 11:20 yep my fav track is you've got your troubles mikeG 06-01-2007, 13:04 I think 1965 was a good year for them.. They then kept a low profile for a few years and re-emerged around 1971 with another hit or two. carsupplier 06-01-2007, 13:14 I used to work with Glen Dale from 'The Fortunes' around twenty years ago. He was a vehicle electrician at the compnay where I worked and was a great bloke, I believe he's still singing at different places aroun the UK. pavlo1969 06-01-2007, 20:06 im trying to find out if anyone knew my dad,he had alot to do with the fortunes.his name was anthony ford or better known as tony.its just a shot in the dark. Timbuck 06-01-2007, 20:08 I used to work with Glen Dale from 'The Fortunes' around twenty years ago. He was a vehicle electrician at the compnay where I worked and was a great bloke, I believe he's still singing at different places aroun the UK. I remember when "The Fourtunes" split up....For some reason after their first success in the recording business the main singer "Glen Dale" left with the drummer "Gary" and they formed a new band it was called "Glen Dale and the Candies" I believe Glen told the band he would split all earings 50-50 what he meant was 50% for him and the other 50% shared amongst the rest of the band..So the band didn't last very long..and Glen went solo on the Clubs...The original "Fourtunes" went ahead and hired another singer and drummer and carried on as usual to great success...Gary became the drummer in another short lived band called "The Connection" the band members were "Vernon Nash"(Ex Joe Cocker on Keyboards) "Barry" (Ex Oharas Playboys on guitar) "John Burdon" ( from London lead vocals) & Gary and Me on Bass and Drums....We tried to bring a new style of Music to Sheffield ..But most audiences didn't like us so we split as well.... I remember Gary he played in a Band with me for a few weeks..Then he went to work as a porter in a Hostpital in Rotherham ..He then lived in Prince of Wales Rd..He married a very pretty girl who was one of twins he met in Scotland while playing for the Fourtunes...This was about 1969....He was from Birmingham and he was a great Drummer, he used to drum for Paul Raven..a.k.n.a. Paul Gadd / Gary Glitter. handypandy 05-12-2007, 21:48 As a drummer I worked with Glen Dale loads of times, a great bloke and a real pro. The last I heard a year or so ago, he was living on the mobile home site at Marsh Lane. He once told me a story that not long after the Fortunes days, he was hired to sing on a commercial for Coca Cola. He was offered a fee for the day or royalties, he took the fee after being told they might not use it. They did use it and it played all over the world and was hugely popular so he didn't make another dime out of it. Anyone remember it? LEE_JON_WS 28-02-2009, 15:51 Glen Dale is my husbands father, he has retired from the music business now but on rare occasions still does perform. :) smary 28-02-2009, 22:02 We saw the Fortunes at the Smithywood Club and Hillfoot Bridge about 1967. Another great group were the Wolves - the Fortunes made it but I dont think the Wolves did. handypandy 28-02-2009, 23:22 The first time I saw them was at Bellhouse WMC, just as "You've got your troubles" hit the charts. They were still honouring their WMC bookings. Can't see many of today's acts doing that. leogem 14-01-2010, 21:11 Glen Dale is my husbands father, he has retired from the music business now but on rare occasions still does perform. :) I saw the fortunes at the burngreave lib club when i was a young boy,Ithought they were fantanstic live. They have always been a group that have stood out in my life, and now being 58 dont think ill see them again, but the most amazing thing that as happened is that the bungalow that i have bought in south anston did at one time probably 1967 belonged to mr, r garforth your farther in law alias glen dale. It was said that Oakland Rd WMC gave them their 1st booking and after that The fortunes did an annual concert at the club.True or not, maybe someone knows. Mick Lister 08-02-2010, 23:42 I remember the Fortunes, however didn't actually see them live, I was a big fan of Glen Dale and the Candies, I first saw them at the Blue Bell Hackenthorp, and then travelled with my girlfriend to just about every WMC in Sheffield to see them. I became friends with Gary Fletcher the drummer, he had a Velocette motorbike and I had a BSA, he was a mechanic by trade and helped me fix the bike on the odd occasion. I caught up with Glen Dale about 2 - 3 years ago on one of my trips back to England ( went to Aus in 1969 ) I arranged to meet him at the Butchers Arms in Eckington, not far from where Glen now lives. I did hear that Gary played with Frank White foe a while. Great memories of the good old days. Luke228 10-01-2011, 21:15 Was He a Grocer from Shiregreen??? The person who you are thinking off is my grandad Wilf Smith who was the grocer in shiregreen and had things to do with the fortunes. :) okismoki 10-01-2011, 22:26 a bloke called paul aldridge used to be the roadie for the fortunes in the 80`s,i always thought they were from the rugby area.....one of em,s ex wife was called christine,we met her and her two kids in mabelthorpe and got chatting about old 60,s music, she mentioned the fortunes,i mentioned paul being the roadie......we ended up chatting until the club closed and we got kicked out. mikeG 11-01-2011, 12:42 Saw the Fortunes in 2008 at Nantwich on the same bill as Dave Berry. I was told some interesting storys about them recently with my interview (radio) with John O Hara as they used the same agents and had i same manager as far as I'm aware. Very interesting thread. MallyMcShort 11-02-2011, 16:34 Yes, saw them live around 1964/5 at the Arbourthorne Hotel davided 12-02-2011, 09:43 Glen now lives in a flat in Eckington, he had problems with one of his legs and had it amputated below the knee. He is doing ok though and is walking better. He used to sing on my karaoke in the butchers arms and it was always a pleasure to listen to him. He told me some interesting stuff but the wikipedia info is not correct and they are listed as a Brmingham band and that isn't true either. Most of them originate from the south of England apart from one who came from Coventry, they were not a Sheffield band either. There is not a great deal of memorabilia of his time with the Fortunes on show apart from a re-mastered beatles ticket with there name on blown up in a frame and a few albums. He doesn't like talking about the Fortunes that much and had difficulty getting somethings out of him and I know that had I belonged in his past my house would be stuffed with memorys of my time with the band. I have always liked the Fortunes and felt privaliged to meet him and have took renewed interest in there music. However he is a nice bloke and never gloats about who he was and thats good. denlin 24-03-2011, 18:15 Got news for you, they're still going - watch out for Solid Silver Sixties shows at city hall. I go and see these groups regularly and Tremeloes still have two and DD,D.B.M AND T until sad loss of Dave Dee they had all originals. many still have originals. In Fortunes case they are, admittedly, not originals but are definitely worth seeing - Bob Jackson (of Badfinger) is excellent and has most amazing voice PaulTansley 25-03-2011, 10:17 yeah, no doubt they are good but its the nostalga of seeing the originals that apeals to me...still i would go and see them. sean_mor 06-09-2011, 23:02 The Fortunes is a Birmingham based group. Rod and Barry the founders of The Fortunes were schoolmates at the Moseley Grammar school in Birmingham. After school the both of them made music and one of the first songs they could play was Wabash Cannonball. Later they attended The Reg Calvert Popschool at Clifton Hall in Rugby. Reg Calvert owned this popschool and he had several artists and groups in his stable. Reg also was the owner of Radio City. Clifton Hall was the place were Richard Garforth a.k.a. Glen Dale started singing together with Rod and Barry. Later on they were completed by David Carr and Andy Brown. Sean sean_mor 05-01-2012, 19:51 Last year Dave Carr (first line-up) passed away.
