I'm with a couple of friends and we are spending the evening enjoying a bottle of 'Jura' single malt whisky. I just wondered what other folks' favourite 'malts' might be?

As long as your not mixing it, a simple blended grouse does me, lucky you

The malt of my choice is Glenmorangie. I first tried it whilst doing a short spell of work in Scotland for the Company I was employed by in Sheffield at the time (30+ years ago) and loved it.

The cost prohibits me from buying it now, but I did have a nip of Speyside at New Year and really enjoyed that too. :)

Oh. Talisker, a wonderful drink, definitely to be enjoyed in good company. My personal favourites are the Islay malts. Laphroaig, Lagavulin etc.

One of our number this evening (morning) considers Glenmorangie the finest malt of all.

My favourite is Ardbeg (sp?). it reminds me of mountaineering on loch Torridan.

Bushmills, irish malt, smoother than silk

Glenmorangie, if your only counting scotish malt

A few years ago we had coffee and buns at Ardbeg (you spelled it correctly). We didn't tour the distilliery though, having been to Bowmore and Laphroaig earlier in the day. Islay is a most wonderful island, and I hope to go back this year.

Laphroaig - strong, deep and peaty
Bunnahabhain - just the same, but more expensive
Talisker - light and fresh
Oban - deep and long finishing
Glenmorangie* - the best mass produced single malt going
Lagavulin - another Islay malt, smoky and peaty, but light besides

*it's pronounced "GlenMORangie", by the way ....... not "GlenmorANGIE"

Which means it's not a malt, my friend, though I have to say as blends go, Grouse isn't too bad ........ had to slum it with a Grant's just now myself ........ I could kill for a Laphroaig now .......

She who must be confused (my wife) has just insisted that we pit a word in for 'Glenlivet', a particular favourite of hers. I must admit to liking it also. I can pronounce GlenMORangie too.

Good lad, on both counts! Glenlivet is a very good mass produced malt to be fair.

I love the Glenmorangie with port wood finish.

Recently got a bottle of The Balvenie Doublewood which I'm yet to tuck into but which smells pretty similar.

We holidayed near Elgin in the Speyside region last August and did the whisky trail thing, there are loads of distilleries around there most of which are just a few anonymous sheds on a hillside. The best distillery tour by far is Glenfiddich, however the best thing I tasted while up there was 18 year old Glenlivet but it is rather expensive! My favourite, that I can afford, is The Macallan, another Speyside.

With you on these - superb.
The only ones I've had that the wife won't put in her bedtime hot milk (heresey). Nearly came to divorce regarding some of the (good) stuff I've caught her polluting in that way.

Laphroaig and Talisker are other favourites.
Apart from that, I can't remember :)

I have eight bottles of malt and am loath to open them. The bottles are nice to look at. I drink 100 Pipers

The only thing one should add to a good Islay (or any other good whisky), is more whisky. Unless I'm in the homeland, when a further 'e' is required.

That's the only one I've tried too. Chivas Regal. It is quite smooth.

Glenfiddich is the one i like.
It was my first malt as id always had blended whiskey before and was reluctant to try a quality whiskey as i thought they were all the same.
I quickly found out that wasnt the case and then pomptly got on with getting p****d.
What a night.

I find Boots own brand (http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1014154&classificationid=1034703&slmRefer=000) is as good as any during the winter months.

We're having another malt evening. Tonight's malt of choice is a litre bottle of Glen Moray, one of the nicer Speyside malts I think. What do other SF folk think?

We're quietly enjoying both the Glen Moray and a wander round the forum (Hic).

Goes great with proper fish and chips Howie. I've just realised that my typing is really suffering as a result of the Glen Moray.

How about Horlicks

How about Horlicks

The chocolate malted Horlicks just cries out for a slug of brandy.
Much as I love whisky, it's wasted on Horlicks. NB - blended whisky only to mix, NEVER the malt!
A rare treat me for after a night shift!

Royal Lochnagar.
The first one I ever enjoyed! Right hard to get hold of down here though...

Talisker -although I wouldn't have characterised it as 'light and fresh', more 'smoky, peaty, salty, punchy' - all of the Islay malts too.

As for mixing, I'll have mine with some water thanks.

But usually I'll just grab one of Oddbins' malts - they do Islay malts, they just won't say which one it is!

A long time ago when I lived in Scotland for a while there was a bar in Hellensburg, I can't now remember the name of, which stocked 150 different brands of whisky, and about a third of these were malts. Sadly I wasn't there long enough to try them all but two that stay in my memory were 'Islay Mist' and 'Blair Atho'l. Haven't ever seen these south of the border but I would like to try them again.

Whilst I was there I struck up with a lass who was PA to the MD of Ballantines distillery in Dumbarton and she very kindly once gave me a half-bottle of their 'Directors Malt'. A brew the company used to send out to favoured customers at Christmas....and it was very nice :D

These days, like many others, I stick to the tried and tested Glenmorangie for no better reason than it's widely available in supermarkets.

Islay Mist, whilst very pleasant and not to be sniffed at, is a blended whisky.

hmm favouties..

Oban
Tobermory
Caol Isla
Bowmore

but there's so many I have (and haven't) tried, it depends on what mood i'm in.

The only thing that is a constant, a good crystal tumbler, no ice, no water.
