View Full Version : Emergency dentists???
Does anyone know if these are only private or are cover on nhs? also what is considered acceptable to see an emergency dentist? and does anyone know where there is one or if you have to see a dentist within your own area like with schools and doctors etc?
Im in considerable amount of pain and paracetamol is doing nothing for me. have taken 12 since this morning and thats tryin really hard to limit myself. Ive rang all my local dentists and none of them are taking on nhs patients only private patients which i think is wrong - surely if they have space they have space? Only one place ive found taking nhs patients has no appointments til april and I cant afford to go private :(
what happens if you cant find a dentist at all? is it summat they would or could sort at a hospital even? i jus need do summat or get stronger pain killers or anything but its drivin me mad! I know its kinda my own fault cos i havent seen my dentist in over 2yrs so they de-registered me and now they're not takin anyone on.
thanks
hazel x
Try www.nhs.uk and click on the dentist link.
You put in your postcode and it tells your what dentists are nearby and whether they are accepting patients
Chris_Sleeps 04-01-2007, 21:53 I know Sheffield has the Dental Hospital, so surely if something is really wrong they can fix it. I dunno how to help. Ring NHS Direct and see what they say.

Grandad.Malky 04-01-2007, 21:54 NHS dental treatment isn’t "cheap" unless you are on benefits or still in school.
Chris_Sleeps 04-01-2007, 21:57 Its worth getting health insurance really, i know thats what my parents do and we've always had regular dental vists.

You can’t keep taking painkillers; I think you have had over you 24-hour allowance of paracetamol already.
Other than calling a emergency dentist or going to A/E and” laying it on a bit thick”
I don’t know what you can do,
Pseudonym 04-01-2007, 22:15 Ha3el, I posted this some time ago, it may help lessen the pain...
Stop-Gap Measures To Cope With Tooth-Ache...
SIP a very small amount of whiskey, allow it to warm up in your mouth, then swill it around the tooth/abcess, or hold it over it with your tongue as long as possible, then spit it out. This will both sterilise and anaesthetise and by spitting it out, you'll be able to also take any painkillers safely. Repeat several times an hour until the pain subsides.
Wrap a thick woollen scarf or similar around your face, covering jaw, mouth and nose (not TOO tightly!)... Also be sure to cover your ears with it (this is very important!). Avoid any sudden changes in temperature, e.g. going from a hot to a cold room & vice-versa.
This method works not only with toothache and abcesses but also helps greatly with neuralgia... compared to which, toothache is a mere inconvenience!
liam1412 04-01-2007, 22:18 Charles Clifford University Dentist will see you if you have facial swelling. But they are students. They are final year students and I have never had a problem there at all. It's free an all.
Kristian 04-01-2007, 22:28 Hazel, whatever else you do, DO NOT take any more paracetamol. You should only take 8 in 24 hours, and even a small overdose can cause irreperable damage!

Try calling the number of your local dentist, or call NHSD on 0845 46 47.
Hope you're feeling better soon. :)

Exactly what I was going to say. Whilst paracetamol is a very safe drug while taken properly, it is also extremely dangerous because it's 'therapeutic' (i.e. recommended) and LETHAL doses are so close.
NEVER EVER take more paracetamol than stated on the packet. Please please do not take any more until late tomorrow!
Kristian 04-01-2007, 23:13 Poo. I think Hazel logged off before I posted this. :(
hiya thanx for all the help. have rang charles clifford and they will see me on mon if i ring back then so least there is light at end of tunnel :)
kristian i did see your post for paracetamol info - and went to bed rather worried bout that fatalities happen 2-4 days after ingestion and ppl often feel fine and they say doses for OD are rather lower than i expected! im sure il be fine but useful info to know so i wont be taking any today - not like it made diff anyway. i will try the whisky thing also.
thanks again
