View Full Version : National Insurance please help
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 17:42 I need some help with this please
I was contacted by my Recruitment agency today saying they had a job for me to start tomorrow. so i went in to get the details when i was told i need my national insurance card. I explained i know my number but ive never recieved it. I said i had it on previous wage slips etc, but was told i need an official doccument. So i went to the Jobcentre on West St (nice!!!) explained this to them, they saw i hadnt ever recieved my card, but explained that because i have moved from swinton to sheffield i cannot get any doccumentation to give my agency. Can anyone help me as to how i can get some sort of letter over the counter/desk saying my NI number
thanks
muddycoffee 03-01-2007, 17:49 I think that someone is messing you about. I don't think a national insurance number card is an official document. And I got mine when I was 15 in 1984 and it has never been out of the house.
SpiderPete 03-01-2007, 17:50 Crikey do they still do National Insurance Cards, very odd request to ask, esp when you know what it is. :loopy:
SallyLaLaLa 03-01-2007, 17:50 That's trolley. If you have a passport that should prove you can work in the UK then you only need to give them your NI no. You only need documentation with your NI no if you have no passport.
SallyLaLaLa 03-01-2007, 17:51 Do you have a passport?
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 17:51 Thats what i thought and when they turned round and said i needed something from the DWP i was mistified? oh well cheers anyway
SpiderPete 03-01-2007, 17:52 which recruitment agency is this ?
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 17:53 yes sal, but they said that i need something with my NI number on, i know the DWP can send letters out confirming my number, but i wondered could they do anything over the desk for me
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 17:53 office angels
never wrong 03-01-2007, 18:00 yes sal, but they said that i need something with my NI number on, i know the DWP can send letters out confirming my number, but i wondered could they do anything over the desk for me
the reason is simple to stop fraud
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 18:03 i understand that, but if i tke my passport driving licence and birth certificate into te job centre could they not print someting off for me saying what my number is
Many places do require proof of NI number now. You'll need a letter from DWP if you can't provide a P45 or P60. There are some others you can use such as any letter you've received from the Inland Revenue about income tax. A previous payslip should be acceptable if it has got your NI number on it, if they won't take that they're being petty. A job centre letter is inadequate it must be DWP.
Eddie_shef 03-01-2007, 18:05 the national insurance card is not a valid form of i.d. anyway... so having it as oppose to just his number and passport wouldnt actually prevent fraud
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 18:08 I dont think you understand they've got my proof of identity but there also asking for my ni number which i cant provide them with cos i dont have so i want to know if the DWP can give me a letter with it on ove the counter if i provide them with my ID
Eddie_shef 03-01-2007, 18:09 ah so you don't actually know your ni number
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 18:15 no, i knw my number as i was in the army for 3 yrs but all i want is a letter saying my number on. I know i can send of for a NI card but i need it straight away
I explained i know my number but ive never recieved it.

So you know it but need proof?
Or you don't know it and need to find out what it is?
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 18:16 yeah iknow it but need proof of it
no, i knw my number as i was in the army for 3 yrs but all i want is a letter saying my number on. I know i can send of for a NI card but i need it straight away
Then like I said, they are asking for proof of your NI number. They should accept a previous army wage slip if it has your NI number on, or a P45 or P60. If you have none of these then only a letter from DWP will be acceptable.
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 18:19 thats fine twiglet, i mean can i get a letter from the DWP over the counter or do they send it through the post
Eddie_shef 03-01-2007, 18:21 in my jobs they never needed proof..not thatthat helps you in this case..
perhaps you should turn up with a tempporary NI number and explain to your employers you are just waiting for proof to arrive...
your TN number is something like TNdate of birth and then Mfor man of F for female.. i think.. i i had one for a while before i got my NI number

He doesn't have a temporary number and doesn't need one, he has a permanent number and knows what it is, just needs a document to prove what it is. Thinking. I actually have no idea where you'd write to or phone to ask for a letter.
Eddie_shef 03-01-2007, 18:27 Yeah but it doesn't sound like he's going to get proff of it.. so he should just turn up and say "I have a NI number but I'm waiting for proof of it, until then you can use my temporary national insurance number"
of course you won't have any proff of that number either but I don't think you need it!!
I'm suprised the DWP can't give you a letter though
i deal with recruitment and i would think that if you have got a P45 from your previous job or pension statment then that would be proof enough for you NI number. if they say they want proof that you can work in the Uk then having a NI number is not proof enough, you need to either have been born in this country, if you where not born in this counrty an employer would also need to see a residency sticker in your passport, or a visa in your passport stating that you are able to work.
it is strange i know but even if you have a NI number it does not mean you are entitled to work or claim benefits in this country....
oh yes the DWP would give you a letter stating NI number but only if in reciept of benefits as it then becomes your reference number.
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 18:33 Im confused by all this now. Ive been ok when i wa sin the army and my previous job which i was at for 3 years i showed my passport n birth certificate and an old wage slip but they wanted it documented from the DWP
Eddie_shef 03-01-2007, 19:11 You don't actually have to be born in this country or have a residency sticker in your passport in order to work legally in the UK
Edit: or a work visa
Humperlumper 03-01-2007, 19:29 You could try going to the inland revenue office near wickes. They tend to use N I numbers as a reference number. When I had a problem in the past they wrote my details on one of their slips and stamped it. They couldn't understand why the employer wanted it, but they helped me anyway. Very nice people!
Don't forget to take some ID and payslips.
Good luck with the job:thumbsup: .
Ricky_22 03-01-2007, 19:31 thanks for thatfinally. where is whicks sorry i live on fornham street near the trainstation
There is a number you can ring to request a replacement N.I card, you are only allowed one replacement. The inland revenue office should be able to provide you with the number to ring
