View Full Version : If left to their own devices, would stupid people die out?

Whilst taking a shower this morning, I happened to see the label on my plastic shower curtain. It read, 'wash with warm soapy water, do not iron. 100% vinyl'. This, of course, got me thinking, 'Why on Earth would anyone decide to iron a shower curtain? It ain't bin in't washer, therefore bypassing the primary route to the ironing pile.' Therefore it must be initiative or inspiration that got it to the ironing pile and surely if you're smart enough to think you're smart enough to know that irons are hot and that plastic melts in hot!

Following on from this thought I began to wonder whether stupidity exists as sort of like a bloodline, where you could be, say, pure stupid or just contain an element of stupid. In this case, the manufacturers are right to put things like 'do not iron' on plastic things, the stupid folk are the fools but are luckily being aided by the altruistic efforts of said manufacturers. Fair enough, I suppose. You can't help what hand you were dealt with.

On the other hand, maybe it's these manufacturers that are being taken for fools. No one whose safety isn't feared for by having ownership of an iron could possibly need these daft instructions; they're simply going too far in the quest not to be sued. In this case, why can't they make sense of 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...'

Possibly related, can these incidence of 'labelling genius' be fueling stupidity? If they were stopped would the overall air of intellegence become greater? Would the stupidity die out like a fire would if you cut off it's air? I know you're not forced to read the instructions, but it does make you dispair a bit! So finally, back to the salient issue of the post: If stupid people were left to their own devices, would they die out?

Yes, and the Darwin Awards are a testimony to this

A European teacher at a school in York once said during a dance class that people sometimes have 'pockets of tw@tiness' (I nearly died laughing), but those who are stupid all the time, will eventually become extinct whilst providing the rest of us with hours of high quality entertainment ;)

Well, if you have a polyester shower curtain, cool ironing it helps to maintain the water repellant nature of the fabric - I have washed and ironed shower curtains like this in the past, so maybe that explains why your particular example does happen? Its not actually so stupid....;)

This reminds me of a joke I read:

'I saw a jar of peanut butter in a shop the other day that said, 'WARNING, may contain nuts' on it. Now if you're too stupid to realise that peanut butter contains nuts, maybe it's better you do die?'

Maybe I should take the people out of the equation.Afterall, surely a person can only be a host to stupidity?

If stupidity was left to to its own devices, would it die out?

Well even really clever people can be really stupid sometimes...

One of my friends gained a 1st in his mathematics degree from Oxford. However one day he was attempting to cook a meal on his own, it was a gas cooker. The ignition switch wasn't working when pressed so he thought the gas might need to build up a bit. He left the gas on to build and went through to another room for a couple of minutes. Upon his return he hit the ignition switch again, BOOM! The door on the cooker exploded smashing into his legs, the flames melted his eyelashes together and left him without any eyebrows.

I think this demonstrates that we are all indeed doomed, or that some really clever people simply have no common sense :).

That's a whole different kettle of fish!

You can't be a real genius until you do something like that!

I once found a badge saying 'It's my birthday
I'm 1 today' and then round the side in small print it said 'not suitable for under 3's' I know its not the same as the shower curtain thing but the people who made the badge are the stupid people who managed to get a job, lol

i agree

there are definately too many safety warnings for the terminally stupid

we are watering down our gene pool by helping them survive

mmm.... I don't think the warning is stupid at all as I don't think peanut is technically a nut. It certainly not in a botanical sense.

I suspect there is a peanut allergy and there is a nut allergy. So the warning probably in place because there is a cross-contamination between the two.

Maybe someone knows better?

I decided to google this one and, it seems that is the case...

Nut allergy is a type of food allergy. It is a hypersensitivity to dietary substances from tree nuts causing an overreaction of the immune system which may lead to severe physical symptoms for millions of people[1].

Nut allergy is slightly different than peanut allergy in as much as the type of nuts that cause the allergic reactions are not the same. Peanuts are considered legumes whereas tree nuts are considered dry fruits. The symptoms of peanut allergy and nut allergy are the same, but a person with peanut allergies may not necessarily also be allergic to tree nuts, and vice versa.

Also
The most common food allergies are:[8]
Milk allergy
Egg allergy
Peanut allergy
Tree nut allergy
Fish allergy
Shellfish allergy
Soy allergy
Wheat allergy

McDonalds hot chocolate has a warning on the side of the cups "caution contents maybe hot":loopy:

and a similar warning on their hot apple pies :loopy: too

if you order something with hot in the title you would expect the contents to be hot wouldn't you???

Its nothing to do with stupidity, its to do with dopey Americans who think they have a right to sue anyone over anything..

So the manufacturers are covering themselfs against litigation.

If you stop at a petrol station in the USA for example, there are signs saying breathing in petrol fumes can cause cancer. This is to stop some pillock suing the petrol company.when contracting a cancer.. Doh...

The consequences of this American desease is that we now, as a nation have to have liability insurance for everything.

Thats why schools are afraid to take pupils on field trips.

And anywhere there is some sort of public gathering has to have this kind of legal protection, to stop some berk from suing the owner/operator after tripping over the hotdog stall at a carboot and burning themselfs.

The Answer your original question...

Stupid people never die out as they cannot spell or describe what contraception is, so they breed like rabbits..

Whilst the middle class (educated) people are having less children!

You, as a nation, now have to have warning labels on everything because greedy British lawyers, like their greedy American counterparts before them, have finally caught on that there is money to be made suing over things like this. Anyway, there may be more than one reason for a seemingly useless warning label. A business or corporations's insurance company may require a warning be posted, or placed on a product label. What may seem like a stupid thing to you, might seem like a good idea to a child, a mentally handicapped person, or someone impaired by drugs or alcohol.

And warning signs/labels don't keep people from suing, har de har. At least in America, they don't. Go here. (http://www.overlawyered.com/) Prepare to be amazed and disgusted at the lunacy of the legal profession. Enjoy.

Stupid people are often living testament to the fact that sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart. ;)

How about this for stupidity(or a senior moment).
Stuck at a level crossing I noticed a half timbered house across the road with 1742 over the door.
As soon as I said I realised what a ...... I was.

"I wonder why that house has such a high number"
Wife and g/son almost died laughing:blush:
