View Full Version : Mens handbags
Just been transferring the contents of my old handbag into my new one and you wouldn't believe all the junk I found lurking in there.
I don't know how you fallas manage without some sort of 'holder' for all your gubbins. Do you just cram everything into your pockets or what? Don't they tear under the strain?
Would you ever carry a handbag like they do on the continent? If not why not?
It is uncomfortable cramming everything into pockets, especially during summer when the only pockets are in the trousers because it's too hot for a coar/jacket. Wallet, mobile, tissues, keys, mints, etc all get crammed into 2 pockets. I'd rather be able to put things into a bag but it would appear a bit camp.
mimicraze 20-09-2004, 12:08 my bloke has been looking for blokes bags but cant find one anywhere, he hates having to carrry everything in his pockets, i think its daft and guys shud be able to have bags like us girls.
I agree TO20, it definately would appear camp. However, men get away with it in Sweden [come to think of it, they get away with a lot of things in Sweden] where handbags for men are a common sight. It would take an awful lot of money to persuade me to walk down an English street carrying one. My wife's just offered me a tenner, go on then...
evildrneil 20-09-2004, 15:24 Someone needs to rediscover the sporan ;)
What about the bumbag?
Goes around your waist like a belt with a bag thing at the front.
Yeah. . . and look like either a niave tourist or just a pratt. .
Ge-oar wit de. . .

Pleeease for your own sake and those of on-lookers just don't go there Jamie....Probably is unfair but a man with a handbag - do me a favour. You'll just have to have big pockets! Sorry..I'm not sure why that is - maybe something to do with brit culture and how it differs from europe? Although if enough British men tried carrying one attitudes would change over time..any volunteers?
Can someone show me where it says I am considering wearing a bumbag? and even if I had said that, and I did choose to wear one, so what!!!?
*groans*
Are you lot all prisoners of what other people may think of you? Do you not have minds of your own?
As it happens, I don't have enough 'bits and bobs' that I carry around with me to warrent the use of anything like a bumbag.
I also imagine they're quite uncomfortable to wear, which would be a consideration for me. I think a backpack may be a better solution.
threecolours 20-09-2004, 20:01 Crikey Jamie - calm down (joke!) it is only my little humorous (sp?)opinion after all...sorry though in that I thought from your earlier comment you were planning to wear a bum bag...wear what you like..but I'm glad you're choosing the ruck sack option!
For the record(!) yes I have a mind of my own - you should see some of the stuff I wear...
Appologies.
Sorry three colours ... had a bit of an over-sensetive moment there ... some idiot on another thread was having an unprovoked poke at me.
p.s. bumbags (imho) have 'tacky' written all over them .. and they're so uncomfortable to wear (I mean probably ... not that I've ever worn one you understand !!).

NO.. I apologise! I believe you (about not wearing a bum bag that is)..glad wer're friends!
I have a floppy, black canvas shoulder bag - big enough to take a laptop if it needs to, pockets for business cards, things to put pens in, a couple of other internal pockets for (in my case) 5x3 index cards, post it notes, cell phone and stuff. It also has a normal handle if you don't want to use it as a shoulder bag.
The inside of the bag isn't separated in to sections, so it'll take a rolled up cagoule, an umbrella, a couple of envelope files, a paperback book, and so on.
Friday's 'load' by the time I got home was a cagoule, an A4 hardback note book, a paperback, the stuff listed above, two cans of soup, three pouches of cat food, a banana, a folded up carrier bag and a load of stuff that had accumulated in the bottom....
And this wonderful thing cost me about a fiver in 1999 from Staples or Office World.

BrainThrust 20-09-2004, 20:53 I generally take a satchel or a backpack everywhere i go, as I like to take a lot of stuff everywhere i go.
I don't really feel fully dressed without an A4 pad and a few pens/pencils. I also tend to take my CD player (until i can afford an iPod) and 48 Cd's, A book (sometimes 2), my GBA, a bag of dice, a drink, a folder with some plastic wallets in it, envelopes stamps, pritt stick, paper clips, a stapler and post-it notes.
I'm an habitual student and a mobile office I guess. If I'm going somewhere and i know I won't need all that stuff I tend to wear cargo trousers so I ca at least take the essentials.

ToryCynic 20-09-2004, 21:27 For College, I have a canvas bag that has a few comparments for paperwork/folders, and in the fron there is a zip compartment where I keep all my essentials - Bus Pass, wallet, college ID Card, chunky tape walkman - saving up for iPod - the CD Walkman doesen't even have Anti-jog but the Tape does have Anti-Rolling, but the batteries run out so quickly.
£11 out of Viking Direct.

Draggletail 21-09-2004, 00:39 Early eighties, I used to carry all me stuff around in an old second world war respirator shoulder bag. Bit alternative. Bit cool (Ithought...)
They sell new 'decorated' (printed) versions of these now in 'Fat Face' Eccy rd at about £30....
Nowadays I just walk about ( in summer) with everything crammed into jeans pockets, jeans falling down due to the weight. Hitching them back up. Sad. :(

Some pretty cool ones in 'Fatface' on Eccy rd mimi. Inspired by 2nd world war respirator bags, decorated and printed. They look 'unisex' to me, not girly. :)
My husband carries a bag a bit like a camera bag. Its small and has a shoulder strap. He now needs to carry his GTN spray for his heart condition, phone, money and other bits. Its small enough to be light and big enough to be useful. Im still talking about the size of the bag here!!!!!!!!
He has always put things in his pockets but since his illness there isnt enough room so he carrys a bag. I think he got it from Matalan.
I really would like to get a soft leather (slightly 'worn' look) saddle back kinda thing ... with side pockets in it.
Has to be very soft leather though ... and maybe lined ... and with a shoulder strap.
Anyone know where you can get something like that.
I would rather use my pockets...
All i usually have on me is my phone... purse... & lippy all small things that can fit into pockets :) was worse when i had the ciggies on me too... lol (bulky fag box)
I have to say i'm not a handbag kinda gal! :?
I often wondered how men coped without a bag.
I'd be lost without my bag - its a mobile filing cabinet, makeup bag, toy box (always have at least one lego brick, toy car, Pokemon cards etc that son gives me to carry for him!), then there's the purse, ciggies, perfume, hairbrush, keys, etc etc. I doubt I could fit all that into my pockets - maybe I just carry too much junk about!
I take a bag EVERYWHERE! Ive got loads…some canvas ones, a few old school leather sport ones, a smaller 7" record bag…and this week I bough a smashing new satchel from accessorize, which now has a mens section. Ace.
I carry a rucksack practically everywehre with all my stuff in it (sunglasses, gameboy, phone, leatherman, spare batteries, pens etc etc) except when Im going to the pub, in which case I travel light...just money, keys and phone in my pockets
Mens handbags are becoming more popular, but they cant look like handbags. most of them look like low hanging satchels
I got a bag in Spain all the men carry one. Its great you can put all your stuff in without having your pockets bulging.
PuressenceUK 27-09-2006, 12:48 Men with these male handbags look ridiculous.
You say you don't know how 'us men' manage without one.
All I have on me is my wallet, tram pass and keys - why would I need a handbag???
stackmonkey 27-09-2006, 13:55 I use a small-ish rucksack that also has a handle at the top of it.
aint it usually geeky people that carry bumbags around with them????
now saying that my mum used to make me have one when i was a kid mmmm lets forget the above haha
James7x7 27-09-2006, 14:43 I have a Marimekko satchel that I bought in a flea market in Finland in 1998. I love that bag - it's not natural. It looks small, but can hold two bottles of wine - very handy when going out to a BYO. Although not designed for records, it can hold a fair few 7-inches. Sadly the bag is looking very tatty now and may not last much longer.
koenigsinger 27-09-2006, 17:01 I have an ex-police issue shoulder bag, great for carrying mp3 player, q magazine, guardian, copies of koenig cd to give to folk, spare deodorant, shades, harmonica, rhythm egg shakey things, hair wax, sweets and a drink!
its not camp, just makes good sense, who has that many pockets ?
Jabberwocky 27-09-2006, 17:13 Theres a bag im after, its soft black leather and its like a rucksack. Im looking all over for one but the buggers are out of stock.
AJ sheffield 27-09-2006, 18:06 As a kid I always used to carry stuff around in a sports holdall or rucksack but as an adult simply stopped using them. Nowadays though I always seem to have loads of stuff on me and my memory aint as good as it used to be and I am regularly misplacing stuff so I sometimes carry stuff in a canvas trainer bag.
If I am in town or out shopping I sometimes use a trendy messenger bag. I was a bit self conscious at displaying high levels of gayness but I dont really care anymore although mens bags have to be "worn" in a certain way to limit visible campness.
I have some credit at Ted Bakers so I might get another, either that or the tasty Lacoste one I saw in USC at Meadowhell.
If I can't carry stuff around in my pockets I carry a small rucksack with me. I do like the look of those man bags but I'm not sure one would suit me. I much prefer my sports bag anyway because I have my arms free if I need to. :)
Do you just cram everything into your pockets or what? Yes.Don't they tear under the strain? Sometimes.
Would you ever carry a handbag like they do on the continent? If not why not? No.
a) I would lose it.
b) I would look like a girl.
c) It would be annoying having to keep hold of something all the time.
