Just acquired a 30 minute 16mm film made in Sheffield in 1975 by the University of Sheffield. It was a promotionally film shot here to try and get 6th formers to apply to Sheffield University, includes a great number of scenes of 70s Sheffield, as well as what students looked like in 1975!!!! Hysterical, actually.....

University Students Union put this in a skip last week and it was rescued by someone thinking it might be interesting. The things they throw out eh? Worth preserving as a great social document about Sheffield student life 30 years ago. We believe, after doing some research at the University, that it to be probably the only surviving print, one of 8 original copies produced for the University in 1975, and shown in schools around the region until around 1980 when it would have been replaced by a new fangled "video" tape version.

Its 30 minutes run time and done in that kind of old fashioned promotional documentary way, with well spoken narration and interviews with "real" 1975 students!!!

Must try and arrange a public screening of this for anyone interested in Sheffield and student life in 75....

A public showing, what a great idea. The chance to see the Sheffield of my youth, I've always wanted to see a copy of the promotional film that is seen partially at the beginning of The Full Monty as well..

I used to have this on VHS somewhere but cant find it now. It was excellant, made by the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce. 'Sheffield..City on the move' I think was the title, but there were one or 2 similar productions made around the same time. Some fabulous shots taken inside the old Fiesta nightclub.....

Wallbuilder get youself down to the local library and ask for a copy of "The Reel Monty".

Following the success of The Full Monty, the promotional film which was made in the 1970's was re-released on V.H.S under the new title.

Brilliant film, very nostalgic, very cheesy in places.

Yes what a super idea.Any chance of screening the films at a
Forum get-together.It could attract members who are not into
"disco and rock" events.Or is that my age speaking!

goldenfleece, how about getting the 16mm converted to VHS or DVD, then for a modest fee other forum members could watch or have their own unique piece of sheffield history.

Then again would you get into bother with copyright etc ?

Not sure about copyright, I have emailed the University last week and received zero reply so I guess they dont give a **** about their old promo films. It was in a skip after all on its way to the incinerators or dump-site. I will telecine it to DVDR, probably later this week and make it available to members. If the University object I am sure they will email me, but its of zero commercial value to them now so I guess they really are not interested...

Or if there is a forum "get together" I could bring along my 16mm projector and show it on a wall or something......

The things these places chuck out.(and we got permission to rummage in the skip from the porter)..we also a few computers, admittedly dated old 486 machines but all in working order which could have been donated to a good cause perhaps? ..27 out of date Mars bars in a box dated sell by October 1987 (one speculates about this....why?), a box of 10 as new printer cartridges for the HP Deskjet 500 series, dated old printers around in about 1995/6 but I know someone who still uses one...a 1982 CAMRA souvenir (cracked) mug for the Students Union old beer festival (must be collectable)...boxes of old University prospectuses .......2 good office swivel chairs, and I mean good and unbroken, around 10 or so smashed PC monitors that looked only smashed when they were chucked in the skip but they might have been dead already of course.

Oh and a roll of tasteless red carpet with a yellow monogram....

No problem, will be doing a transfer to DVDR only, no VHS, and will make this available at cost, lets say say £1.25 to inc first class post. There will also be 3 other short University promo films on the disk, one from 1984, and 2 from the early 90's which show some Sheffield City Centre scenes.

This is something that Radio Sheffield and the Star would
be interested in.

Why not contact them - they may do all the conversion work for you .

I transferred the 1977 version of the film I mentioned which I acquired yesterday from the same source. Its the same as the 75 version except more University based and longer with more lecture and student interview footage, and nothing much of Sheffield in general. The original has "sprocket damage" and wont telecine at all, took it to a converson place on Abbeydale road, they could do nothing with it. I managed to do one myself onto DVDR but the sound went slightly out of sync with the picture....great image quality and sound....sound just a bit slower than the picture...something to do with film being 24 frames per second and camcorder being 25 fps or something....

have the master DVDR nearly ready now, Monday should see me giving out details if you want some copies, but remeber these are NOT films about Sheffield the City, but designed for 6th formers coming to SHeffield University, so they are biased towards the educational fraternity rather than any tourist element.

Still cant get the sound of the 1977 film to match the pictures.....lip sync is about 2 seconds off, not that it seems to matter much. Tried moving the sound track in my editing software, frame by frame to match the audio to picture in Pinnacle STudio 9, but 2 seconds out is the closest I can get it.

trech stuff, the film was projected onto my screen and captured direct to camcorder and then transferred to the PC for cleaning up. The audio was captured to CDR independantly and ythen matched with the image. Can only assume the projector was not running exactly 100% to true speed, which may account for the audio track being slightly longer in length than the original sound track on the film. Tried all kinds of sound editing and re-sizing but that just makes things worse. ANyone an expert in this process?

£14 seems a bit much to me, does anyone know if this i the usual cost for these kind of things? A long time ago I worked in an old peoples home and we had various films of old sheffield, don't know how much they cost but they were quite interesting.
Will the Star shop not stock this?

goldenfleece

There is probably thousands of feet of old Sheffield film in the form of home movies on 8mm lying around in peoples attics. My parents used to take 8mm film of the family growing up from 1963 through to around 1975. Only one year of that saw us in Sheffield though and the only Sheffield views are Hallam Golf course, a building site, some swings at Hallam playground and long pan shot of some storm clouds over Lodge Moor.

But there would have been lots of people with 8mm cameras in the 60s and 70s in certain parts of Sheffield. In fact I have the facilities to transfer this to DVDR, as long as its not soundtrack 8mm film......

I would love to spend a day in the City centre with the camcorder capturing everything.....in 20 years time it will all be totally different again and someone might be interested.......

PM me, I can do you a copy of the unwanted University of Sheffield film on DVD, the only problem is the sound is slightly out of sync but a pro transfer is too expensive to think about.....

The Copyright is still owned by the University of Sheffield but since they skipped the only surviving copy and the master negative, I think it means they dont really care at all...plus when I offered them a copy of the said film for their archives they were not in the slightest bit interested..

they are mad...its a great bit of Sheffield history.....

If anyone does have any old film out there the Yorkshire Film Archive would like to know of it. We alreadyhave a good collection of films from Sheffield, some of which will be going free online next year (see my other posts). But anyone can search the YFA catalogue online and make an arrangement to come in and see any film. We are also putting on a free film show of old films from Sheffield at the Showroom, Sheffield, at 2pm and 6pm on 25th March. Also, bear in mind that if the film isn't stored in the correct conditions it will deteriorate The YFA has special vaults for preserving film).
