Any opinions on Vanilla, the forum software? I'm currently dabbling with a forum on my site and have chosen Vanilla. I like it but wondered what all you experts think of the engine, security and administering etc?
Cheers.

It does seem very basic, there's a demo installation here (http://opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2123), things that you'd take for granted if you've used any others seemingly have to be added as extensions with Vanilla, which I can see getting painful at patch or update time. If you're looking around for options, check out smf (http://simplemachines.org/), I've used it for a couple of sites now.

SMF is a good forum script:thumbsup:. Though I've stopped using it, in favour of Jupiter CMS (www.jupiterportal.com/)

If I need anything like that I use mkportal (http://www.mkportal.it/) with either smf or phpbb, or, if it's more basic, php-fusion (http://www.php-fusion.co.uk).

They're full CMSs though. JCM is (currently) a forum/user management script.

A vanilla install of JCM is (basically) a forum/calendar combination.

You then code any extras yourself (or use some of the already created modules).

I've (currently) got 3 sites running it. All started as a standard install of JCM. All have different features (using many mods I've worked on), and all look different (unlike most of the other forum/cms scripts).

The next version of JCM though, promises to be more like the other CMSs out there (which is why I'll not be using/upgrading).

no-body actually using vanilla then? I like the minimalist structure of the vanilla forums.
I'm only using a few extensions and I believe most don't need updating when the forum does.

Not me. Really don't like it (in its initial install - which I never got beyond).

I like the minimalist structure of the vanilla forums.

I think it is too minimalist:).

TBH. I don't use any "stand alone" forum script anymore (though I'd recommend SMF if the site is a forum only operation:thumbsup:). I'd certainly not use VF for a forum only site (similar to this one):).
