View Full Version : What? No Metal In Sheffield???
general_head 02-01-2007, 07:43 PM Corporation? Going to the dogs. Casbah? hahahahahaha! Anywhere else? Duh?
Why is it that Sheffield, which has always had a healthy rock/metal scene, and still has, but nowhere really gives you a good night anymore. Corporation was good on Mondays, but now it's just too commercial. What can we salt of the earth metallers to do to keep ourselves off the streets?
I know you probably won't care about this, but I feel a little better sharing my dismay.
muddycoffee 02-01-2007, 07:47 PM Nelson is pretty good for metal.
And Goldenfleece At the Dove and Rainbow will happily play you some metal..
general_head 02-01-2007, 07:50 PM Yeah, but they're both pubs that shut at normal closing time, where out of the hundreds of "rave clubs" can I go to get my rocks off. We don't have to be in bed at midnight.

I don't think so,
Dove and rainbow goes on late, I have been in until midnight on several occasions.
Why don't you just go out earlier?
If you start drinking at 7pm instead of 9pm, then midnight is the new 2am.
general_head 02-01-2007, 08:05 PM :hihi: I suppose so. But I just hate to look like the lightweight. Can't we just bust Gatecrasher with my favourite Pantera and At The Gates albums?
Or, rather like the early nineties church burnings in Norway we could just....... I shouldn't really go there, should I??

Yes the Dove and Rainbow is ok but it is only a rock pub and not a night club.
We went to the Nelson on New Years Eve but it wasnt as full as a normal Saturday night and after midnight the standard of the music seemed to go a bit dodgy to say the least. So we left early.
I have already made a comment on the Corporation thread that quite a few of my friends refuse to go to the Corporation any more as they find the music as you say has gone very pop/rock commercial and boring and dont seem to play any good guitar orientated head banging music anymore.
My mate is a rock DJ in a pub in London if he played some of the stuff we get he would get bottles thrown at him.
in some pubs same songs every week no new iron maiden cd tracks like different world .these colours dont run. or even rainmaker. do they think we stopped buying cds in the 80s there is only 1 good freelance dj at the mow and she plays any track you ask for:thumbsup:
have just been on a thread about the corp and they are doing a new ska night not long till the rock night will disappear i think:huh:
Classic Rock 03-01-2007, 04:44 PM I run a rock night at the Moorfoot Tavern every Saturday night - playing rock from the good old days through to present day. I've usually got a live rock band playing with me too. Decent beer prices as well. Free entry.
goldenfleece 03-01-2007, 05:53 PM Yep, will play you most metal/.rock if I have it....just come in and ask.....but not tonight as its EVERFINK goth night which is an ever so slightly different sound to metal in general:hihi:
Amsterdamned 03-01-2007, 05:56 PM There's a metal night at Under The Boardwalk on Tuesdays.

We need more weekend nights.

i always thought saturday corp was metal?
the nelson?
fox20thc 04-01-2007, 01:38 AM I think the point that the OP was trying to make was that there used to be a thriving rock/metal scene in Shiny Sheff. back in the day when we were young :hihi:
No Rebs (kids used to come from all over the county for the dump we loved so much) no wap, no Yorkies, Maily, Hornblower... Roxys rock night.. :help: Okay that may be stretching things a little but we had options for after hours drinkies..
The current options are now rather limited and juvenile... we should agree on that.
medusa 04-01-2007, 02:03 AM Some Friday nights at the new Arches are rock/metal- there are adverts about on the forum somewhere (I'll have a hunt about for them in a bit).
EDIT- I think I've got my wires crossed- the thread is about the Arches pub- not the club. Sorry.

Totally agree with that. What there is seems to fall into two categories; goth stuff, endlessly, or just a stock set of stuff from each DJ.
You missed out the Foresters too ........
fox20thc 04-01-2007, 02:14 AM You missed out the Foresters too ........
Slaps hand in shame... :P
happyhippy 04-01-2007, 02:29 AM Slaps hand in shame... :P
Just don't do it again :hihi:
Seriously though, for the last decade or so it's been pretty rubbish, with the Sportsman, and latterly the Yorkies/CRB being the mainstays, but even then, it was very 'same old, same old'.
Much as I love dear ol'Viking Mark to pieces, if I EVER hear 'Stargazer' by Rainbow again, I'll kill.
Everyone, and everything.
The Dove's doing a good job, mind, but I just worry that it's too small.
The Nelson has never been a metal bar; it's barely rock (sorry Tim, but it has been a goth place for ages - and continued good luck mate).
The Sporty is just terrible now.
Sorry, but it really is awful at the moment.
the_nelson 04-01-2007, 10:34 AM The Nelson has never been a metal bar; it's barely rock (sorry Tim, but it has been a goth place for ages - and continued good luck mate).
Excuse me?! You actually bothered to read any of our flyers?
Tues - Control Frequency - Industiral/EBM/Noise
Wed - Rockaoke - Rock karaoke
Thurs - Stormblast - extreme metal (been going well over a year!)
Fri/Sat - Generations of Rock (including DJ Lez downstairs every Sat night)
The only 'goth' night (Dark~Matter - EBM/industrial/goth) we do is fortnightly downstairs, and we're removing the 'goth' bit from that this year.
So you see, no 'goth' in sight...
Or are you just assuming that because it's painted red and black that it must be 'goth'?
goldenfleece 04-01-2007, 11:30 AM The Dove's doing a good job, mind, but I just worry that it's too small.
Small? You wouldn't think that if you had to clean and decorate the place!! Felt like the same size as the City hall stuck up on scaffolds pouring black paint over my head and stepping in pots of purple emulsion. Oh that was a FUN day!!!!:hihi:
And as Tim says, anything painted black (or black/red) does not necessarily mean a goth venue....or person even. We have a black ceiling and black doors but we are not a goth venue. We had a goth night last night (EVERFINK), and just twice a month, and the actual number of what you might define as 'stereotypical' excessively black clad goths were in the minority, it was a very broad range of attire indeed.
Any setlists floating about? I ask because I once went to an "extreme metal" night that was mostly Fear Factory and I was sore displeased
nightwish 04-01-2007, 12:42 PM Any night's a good night for seeing a good band....
yes if don't have to pay £20 4 a babysitter on my wage plus i only got one day off work this christmas
that's coz i sold my last big issue :hihi:
Classic Rock 04-01-2007, 01:28 PM just a stock set of stuff from each DJ.
Some DJs do play stock sets, the same old songs all the time, but many I know (including yours truly) carry thousands of tracks along and vary it. They also take requests, so if the public are asking for the same old songs...that's not the DJ's stock set.
I also do a rock night up at the White Bear in Ecclesfield every Friday night. Most of the punters like to hear fairly recent rock there.

or to
the same 20 80s rock track night every week or i will give you a free drink:hihi:
its not generations of rock music what happened to rock after 1990 ???
buy your djs a hmv gift voucher each for Christmas so they can buy some new cds
like iron maidens new cd never heard it in your pub upstairs or down
your djs would be the best in south yorkshire if it was 1987:thumbsup:
ps
maybe you are stopping the goth night coz people have found a better goth night at a better pub????

Tim, it's full of the buggers ;) . In fairness, it's been gothy/industrial whenever I've been in, and it's just not my thing; I just must have been in on the wrong days mate ........ it has been a while too ........

I know Tim quite well, and it was a tad of a wind up  . I used to work just down from you, and above Tim's place (that's blown my cover), so I know both places pretty well .......

<fx: puts the nit back>
nightwish 04-01-2007, 08:06 PM gets played all the time
Well I bought it the day it came out and Lez has it as well.
Have you ever actually requested it?
:o what you are joking i have taken cds to one of your djs for years metal church never ever ever got it played took cd in not long a go never ever ever got it played
off work today what have i played lets see
mostly autumn -catch the spirit
maiden - life & death
ramms+ein mutter
evanescence- fallen
you never play any of them on sat "sorry" ramms+ein once :o
hell !!!! lets see bands from the 80s you don't play on a sat night
night ranger ,metal church, giant ,Alcatraz , triumph , slaughter, Gillan , demon ,marillion , accept .warlock .pearl jam, raven .reo speedwagon,
white lion, badlands ,annihilator ,slayer, merciful fate, Alaska ,exodus ,yes MSG, Gary Moore, helloween, shotgun messiah ,
there are a few 4 you
heard "its a mad house" NEW years eve went down a storm yes i do love all the bands your djs play but lets just hear a few different bands or different songs as they always play same songs eg Pink Floyd Arnold Lane, Ozzy Crazy Train, Deep Purple Highway Star, AC/DC Back In Black, Led Zeppelin- Rock N Roll, Journey Don't Stop Believin, Rush Spirit of the Radio. Autograph Turn Up the Radio, sabbath war pigs , rainbow since you've been gone, thin lizzy the boys are back in town last of all that boring neil young track
well i am only down for last orders on sat and dont mind hearing 2-3 real classics once a week
in the end people vote with their feet your loss not mine
goldenfleece 04-01-2007, 08:33 PM It's a difficult thing this DJ business....if you have a crowd of regulars who request the same stuff each week, you feel almost obliged to play the stuff they want, as they are the regulars after all, and hand over large amounts of their hard earned cash every week at the bar. One is trherefore less likely to play a lot of less obvious stuff requested by 'floating' punters as they may not come back for another month anyway....
Its a fine art to balance the standard 'classics' such as some of tracks listed above, ie Rainbow 'Since you've been gone', with some of the many alternative options, especially if you have say 10 punters requesting one track played every week anyway, and only one request for a track that may not 'impress' the regulars too much. What is the solution?
Not an easy task..... because at the Dove we have some regulars who always want the same tracks each week, very much in line with the tracks listed above, but also a core of new people each week who want totally different stuff.....it can be a real task sometimes to try and blend the old regularly played classic rock tracks with material that most may not be too familiar with.....
muddycoffee 04-01-2007, 10:24 PM I find Goldenfleece very obliging.
He comes over and says hello and actually asks me what requests I would like. And he always plays them for me. Perfect, pour me beer and play me rock music.
Marvellous.
the_nelson 04-01-2007, 10:45 PM maiden - life & death
ramms+ein mutter
evanescence- fallen
you never play any of them on sat "sorry" ramms+ein once :o
eh? those bands get played practically every week
hell !!!! lets see bands from the 80s you don't play on a sat night
hang on, you were moaning that we don't play anything after '87. Make your mind up mate
well i am only down for last orders on sat and dont mind hearing 2-3 real classics once a week
ah, and there you have it. You expect to come in at the end of the night and get all yours requests played straight away. Fact is from about 9.30 Lez's entire setlist is all requests, he'll often go on the mic asking people not to request anymore cos he's all booked up for the rest of the night.
in the end people vote with their feet your loss not mine
erm not really, we're packed most weekends, and the Xmas period just gone we did twice as much as the year before
but thanks for your past custom anyway
goldenfleece 04-01-2007, 11:00 PM Ah yes, it is SO annoyng when someone comes in at 10 mins to midnight and expects to hear about 20 tracks, all of which have been played previously.... then try explaining to a punter that they have missed all their requested songs a few hours earlier and they go ape and try and make out they were all played far too early and that 10 minutes to midnight is the PEAK of the evening and of course there is time to play 90 minutes worth of songs when the doors have to be locked and pub cleared at 1230!!! Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....
Pop down here Nightwish and I will oblige you with all your requests providing:
1) it is not 10 minutes away from closing and you want to hear 20 tracks in exact order and only mport remix versions by obscure German sound engineers,
and
2) its not a specialist night where the choice of music would be out of context with the theme.......

yes goldenfleece i understand wot you are saying
play new maiden tracks at the start of the night then people get to know them then you start playing them later as your regulars get to know them  and drop the good classic songs in as well
yes we all hate it if you play lots of songs we dont know all night but please remember this thread is about playing the songs we want to hear you play what people want to hear even if it is paranoid by sabbath
so do see what i mean
i dont think you are far away from being the best rock pub
what you could do on sat night make some room 4 a bit of a dance floor some more dance lights bingo
people would stay till you closed
you have done so well in what less than 3 months
can you have a dance floor? or do you need a licence for that:confused: as h/s laws are so tight
keep up the good work:thumbsup:

No room for a dancefloor really, people would be crashing into the bar and falling over chairs....now we put in a stage but no one is actually allowed on that to dance, so say the Council anyway........
dance lights?....er....not really our 'thing' if you know what I mean...we have lighting for bands now in place, parcans, etc, but as for flashing 'disco' lights, I dont think it would enhance our 'offer'....
Remember, just ask me for whatever you want, and subject to the rule in earlier post, I will normally play it if I have it........

the list was bands from the 80s lez dont play
i can give you a list from the 90s as well if you like
sorry i am not the only one to
lots think the same way :D
its nice to see you care about my past custom i would say hope for more of your custom in the future
keep lez on the flyers so i know when to start coming back down again:)
NEKRO138 05-01-2007, 11:00 AM What happened to djs playing songs that people haven't heard yet and then people liking it and asking what it was?
I much prefer to hear some good music I don't know and to go and buy it the day after, rather than have Iron Maiden and Evanescence played at me all night.
Metal dj sets tend to be very stale.
JohnM 05-01-2007, 11:29 AM The problem with rock/metal is that its covers music from the last 40 years and many folk only really think of stuff that they liked from 15-25 as the "real" rock/metal - and everything else is too old/young/trendy/obscure - so its virtually impossible to keep everyone happy.
But I am quite entertained that people are still asking Lez (the ex-Rebels DJ??) for Metal Church and still not getting it played - has someone set the tardis for twenty years ago??

Yeah, exactly. There's more to metal than AC/DC, Maiden and Steppenwolf. Makes me cringe to hear the same songs over and over. I don't even really like to hear Metallica or Pantera played. I'm tired of it.

it was 12 years ago and sill waiting even took him the cd with play track 2 on it
yes its hard to keep the rockers happy but as i have said the same songs week in week out just a few new bands in the play list would be nice:)
:help: has any one heard the new iron maiden cd the matter of life and death at the nelson on a sat night as i have been told they play it i may have been in the bog when it was played or up stairs or down stairs if i am wrong i will say sorry to the nelson:thumbsup:
nightwish 05-01-2007, 02:09 PM Yeah, exactly. There's more to metal than AC/DC, Maiden and Steppenwolf. Makes me cringe to hear the same songs over and over. I don't even really like to hear Metallica or Pantera played. I'm tired of it.
yes theres more to metal as you say than the top bands  i look on the internet 4 free downloads of new bands
see if i like them if i do go and :wow: them when they tour my mates tell me about new bands as well yes some i think are s:gag: it but the odd 1can be so good i first heard bands like nightwish back in late 2002 as bern my mate was mad about them at the time
goldenfleece 05-01-2007, 05:35 PM What do you think of the new Maiden release? Mixed feelings?
probedb 05-01-2007, 05:52 PM I have already made a comment on the Corporation thread that quite a few of my friends refuse to go to the Corporation any more as they find the music as you say has gone very pop/rock commercial and boring and dont seem to play any good guitar orientated head banging music anymore.
So which nights do you go on? Last time I went to Hard side there was Biohazard, Pantera, Metallica, Mastodon, Tool to name but a few artists played.
However if you insist on staying downstairs in the main room then you get what you deserve ;) The small room on a Monday is very good and Stocky who is one of the DJs is great....he used to DJ at Hardside which made it fantastic.
If you find it crap, complain, you're a customer!
muddycoffee 05-01-2007, 05:54 PM What do you think of the new Maiden release? Mixed feelings?
It is a wonderful return to form. I love the way they have developed over the last few years, and added some interesting elements to their songwriting and their sound.
Bearing in mind how old they are now, they are never going to come up with another record like number of the beast which would break boundaries. This new record is much better than anything I could have hoped for, I had written them off completely many years ago.
asw909 05-01-2007, 06:02 PM Metal dj sets tend to be very stale.
...if you are playing the same metal as everyone else.
At Stormblast I have now been successfully sticking to a diet of extreme metal (in many varying forms) every Thursday for over a year now. I won't play "classic" metal, whats the point? That is not what I - or the majority of the punters - are there for.
I have a number of DJs that DJ alongside me, that help to keep things fresh musically.
The other thing? Requests are more than welcome, but like other popular nights, it helps to get your requests in early - I will often refuse if only half-an-hour is left, for obvious reasons!
nightwish 05-01-2007, 07:51 PM yes cant go out in the week as i work and i start at 0600 and do a 12 hour shift so the weekend is the only time
we have a kid as well but thanks
as this is all about playing songs the punters want to hear not the same 20 songs week after week after week after week
nightwish 05-01-2007, 08:07 PM What do you think of the new Maiden release? Mixed feelings?
yes found it a bit hard going at first if you listen to the whole album
Bruce's voice at times you cant hear what he is singing and its in the same tone a lot of the time:o
best track i think is different world as i like the short hard hitting songs by
iron maiden but they do some bad tracks as well the last cd i didn't like as much as this one
but the new cd has a lot of punch in it more than the last i think:huh:
but is bruce's voice going:o what do you think:confused:
nightwish 05-01-2007, 08:30 PM So which nights do you go on? Last time I went to Hard side there was Biohazard, Pantera, Metallica, Mastodon, Tool to name but a few artists played.
However if you insist on staying downstairs in the main room then you get what you deserve ;) The small room on a Monday is very good and Stocky who is one of the DJs is great....he used to DJ at Hardside which made it fantastic.
If you find it crap, complain, you're a customer!
done that!!!
no the whole thread is about djs playing songs you ask for as i like old rock and some new metal as well:huh:
if you read this thread start to end you will see what i mean

ForSerious 06-01-2007, 06:24 AM Sad thing about the metal scene in sheffield is people are quite happy to listen to ac/dc, led zep, iron maiden, metallica(enter sandman) etc. Once you start playing stuff which i consider good metal (death, early in flames, at the gates, anthrax, venom, mayhem, napalm death etc etc) you get a lot of people slagging you off. face it sheffields metal scene is so close minded and stangnant.

I think it depends what sort of crowd you have in at any time. I know Napalm Death goes down like a lead balloon when I have played it....especially if you have an older more seasoned crowd in........its not everyone is narrow minded, its just that certain groups of punters dont like certain variations of metal or rock, thats not being narrow minded, it means just not liking it. I know a classic rocker who totally despises and hates the band Deep Purple, ANYTHING they have ever done, but thats just their personal taste......

Totally agree with that.
Sometimes we have to exercise our veto on requests if we feel in our professional opinion that it's just not gonna go down well.
But also, as DJs we have to regularly listen to bands/songs we may not like ourselves. Lately I've turned over a lot of my DJ responsibilites over to Glen/DJ Kicker (my assistant manager), simply because I'm tired of having to play the same songs each week. Until I find my enthusiasm for it again. So I do sympathise with certain commentators on this thread. However, if we didn't appeal to the majority, it would be financial suicide!
which raises an interesting question...

To all Rock DJs reading this...
Is there any band/song that you will refuse to play (even if you own it) because you dislike it that much you simply can't bring yourself to play it?
I'll go first:
anything by The Mission
Closer by NIN (I've had to listen to that bloody song in every rock bar/club that I've been to for the last 10 years! I used to like it at first btw)
Let the flaming commence

Hmmmmmmm......
My pet hates are also the incredibly overplayed stuff that is always requested, and you always most certainly probably hear at any classic rock night anywhere..
ie SINCE YOU BEEN GONE by Rainbow.....as much as I love Rainbow, that song does my head in......surely the most played to death song in classic rock history...I hate it so much I have to put headphones on and listen to something else while its playing.....
add to that
PARADISE CITY by GnR..........incessantly boring after the 2000th listen, even the short 7" single edit version with the dramatically cut down guitar solo still annoys me......fingernails on a blackboard for me this tune!!!
And just beginning to get very bored of 'Whisky in the Jar' by Thin lizzy.....a total and very important rock classic of course, but gets painful when its requested ALL the time.....
But as the Nelson points out, its the regulars who will always most certainly continue to get their requests played, as without those core groups being kept very happy and made to feel important, business can never be as good.......
tricky thing is also explaining to a non regular why you refuse to play that obscure Slayer album track in the middle of a classic rock set.....they never seem to appreciate that majority tastes at any time will over rule their own personal requirements, or that that obscure Slayer album track wont blend very well with Sweet home Alabama!!!!
the_nelson 06-01-2007, 05:15 PM Hmmmmmmm......

It always makes me laugh when 'classic' rockers come in on a Thursday (Stormblast - extreme metal night) and ask for Thin Lizzy/Deep Purple/Led Zep. D'oh. Poor Adam, it's no wonder he has very little hair on his head ;)
And last Friday was particularly funny, when Glen had to play DragonForce cos more than one person requested it. He hates them with a passion, and always berates me for playing them. The most excruciating 7 minutes of his life! lol
Its strange what nostalgia does - do people really miss Rebels or just miss their youth when they used to go to Rebels - and things werent all confusing with all these youngsters and their new music?
Whatever you may think of Corp - at least its run by people who like the music - which is a lot more than could be said for the Rebels management...

Classic Rock 06-01-2007, 07:08 PM Hmmm...my user name probably is a bit outdated for the style of music I play these days.
Even at the old Classic Rock Bar we didn't just play classic rock, we played anything that was asked for. These days I mix it up, some new stuff gets played as well as the classics which are asked for.
I don't tend to get requests for the heavy and obscure....thankfully...although do carry a fair amount of rock by bands that are non mainstream rock.
It's fairly easy to incorporate lesser popular requests into a set....there's an art to it...:)

nightwish 06-01-2007, 08:24 PM bands i have found out about that are OK darf i think you spelli t like that very heavy and a band called malpractice take a look

Wasn't a DJ, but used to work with naughty people who used unused FM space while was very young ........ so I'll have a semi-qualified stab at it .......
If I EVER hear 'Stairway To Heaven' again, I'll not be held responsible for my actions ....... BUT it's 'our song' and all the rest for loads of people, so it can't be banned, so it's fair enough ..... I have to go outside so I can't hear it.
'Enter Bloody Sandman'; they did other stuff too. Better stuff.
This may be heresy to the metallers, but I really cannot hear several Sabbath songs ever again (much as I love the Sabbath), but 'Iron Man' really does my biscuit in. People used to ask for it and say "Just so you don't hear 'Paranoid' again!"
Thoughtful, however usually, I'd have preferred to have heard Paranoid .........

Which is why I waited to ask for Candlemass! Have to say, a very enjoyable evening, and I forgot the CD!
ForSerious 07-01-2007, 07:38 AM Well sadly i have to say the only solution is to advertise nights as sub genre specific such as death metal nights, classic metal nights, glam metal nights etc etc. even say extreme metal nights, i have mates that listen to a lot of death metal but find the idea of black metal a joke. however this would never work because you dont have the numbers to support it, thats why metal nights are so ambigious and you have people whining all the time.
nightwish 07-01-2007, 07:41 AM Sad thing about the metal scene in sheffield is people are quite happy to listen to ac/dc, led zep, iron maiden, metallica(enter sandman) etc. Once you start playing stuff which i consider good metal (death, early in flames, at the gates, anthrax, venom, mayhem, napalm death etc etc) you get a lot of people slagging you off. face it sheffields metal scene is so close minded and stangnant.
yes so stagnant its starting to smell like s:gag: it
ForSerious 07-01-2007, 07:45 AM I'd like to add if i ever wanted to listen to what i consider metal, i have my cd collection. when i go to places like corp, the nelson etc im out there to have a drink and a good time, not to whine about what music is being played.
*Turbo* 07-01-2007, 12:36 PM Interesting thread. No one is going to be 100% happy 100% of the time at any club/pub.
So it seems pointless argueing (sp). If you want a specific night of a specific type of music then nelson has plenty of variation during the week. Not ideal but i guess a death metal night on a saturday would be poor for business!! lol
goldenfleece 07-01-2007, 01:21 PM i guess a death metal night on a saturday would be poor for business!! lol
Would be a real challenge!!!! Possible, but very very difficult, unless you found a way of converting all classic rock lovers to death metal? Hmmmmmm......
look into my eyes..I will count backwards from 10 and you will feel very sleepy......10...9...8, etc .you love death metal.....it is your reason to live, without death metal you would surely become nothing........:hihi:
Classic Rock 07-01-2007, 04:18 PM I try to make excuses when people ask for Living on a Prayer. I pretend I don't have it....but they *know* I do. Sick of it. Also Summer of 69. Everyone loves it but hearing it several nights a week does my box in! Also Sweet child o mine and anything by the Arctic Monkeys (enough said on that band).
I was asked for Take That mid rock set last night by a woman and had to explain several times that it was a rock night, she just didn't seem to understand! She walked off bitterly disappointed.
I always do enjoy playing Rammstein and Disturbed back to back, cos little Jackie always gets up, irrespective of how busy the pub is and dances/moshes/headbangs to it. Regulars are used to it, but she's had some odd looks in the past!
Welby 07-01-2007, 06:31 PM What happened to djs playing songs that people haven't heard yet and then people liking it and asking what it was?
I much prefer to hear some good music I don't know and to go and buy it the day after, rather than have Iron Maiden and Evanescence played at me all night.
Metal dj sets tend to be very stale.
This has always been my complaint from living in Sheffield for years and going to all the Rock venues. For my money the best DJ for mixing it up was Les when at Rebels , he would play pretty much everything rocky from INXS to Metallica . People kept dancing and it remained interesting. Who wants to listen to a such a narrow genre as death or grunge or classic rock all night? The best and current of all these genres is what DJs should be playing if they want to keep their audience interested . You gotta keep it moving forward or all you'll do is strangle the rock/metal scene in its broadest sense . Its been ****e watching the average age of the people listiening and going to rock pubs get older and uglier. Does anyone remember the girls on Monday nights at Roxys?

mister_hex 10-02-2007, 06:55 PM Stormblast at the Nelson on thursdays is the only real place to hear NEW as well as classic extreme metal. Regular guest DJs keep it fresh and the atmosphere is one of community rather than one of scene. The music, in all honesty, doesn't get heavier/darker/harder ANYWHERE in the city.
And to the poster that said it was a goth place... not for a bloody long time it hasn't been! Which is good, as if I hear 'Eloise' one more time I think I'll spontaneously combust.
I love the Nelson. I love their staff, the place, the music and the atmosphere. I also love the fact that they cater for genres otherwise almost completely neglected everywhere else in the city.
Sure you'll hear Angel of Death and all the obvious tunes get requested every week, but you'll also hear a good chunk of the latest releases as well as more obscure ones.

.....if it gets requested, it gets played at the Dove, be it ANY extreme metal, classic or new, ......depends what people are in as to what we play, we reflect exactly what the punters expect and request......I do actually have a good collection of extreme stuff that rarely gets heard as generally we dont get asked for it on a regular basis......but its there and just waiting to be heard....

Nightcaster 19-02-2007, 04:37 PM I think it's time that someone set up a new pub/club is Sheffield that plays Euro Black metal/Thrash/Goth. I can't stand most American rubbish (an exception would be Disturbed) and that's all I ever seem to hear in clubs. I almost jumped for joy when I heard a Lacuna Coil song the other day (First time ever) Euro metal is heavily underepresented. Maybe we should sabotage the Crasher and paint it metal style to make a point! Do I have to hold up the DJs at gun point to get them to play Nightwish and Sonata Arctica?
Nightcaster 19-02-2007, 04:40 PM Casbah is pants, so is The Sportsman
I don't know why but I passed by Casbah once and it kinda scared me. It was full of aged bikers havin' a fag.

yes its so hard 4 the pubs to play all types of rock as old farts like to hear the same 20 80s cds as at the start of the tread :loopy:
but if they got there heads out of the sand to see the light they my like some new bands eg nightwish / daughtry / blind guardian. etc god i am 45 and am not happy bands like this dont get played downstairs at the nelson not even the new iron maiden cd on a sat night i think the dj is to blame as he should be playing new stuff as well as the classics and yes it was good to hear nemo upstairs maybe the change starts here the 80s was a good time for rock but lets move on and if you luv the AOR of the 80s there is a lot of new sounding AOR bands on arfm give it a ear
a lot of the djs are trying hard .buffy .dove and rainbow and.dj moth boy he played to nemo track on sat night
goldenfleece 20-02-2007, 10:53 AM a lot of the djs are trying hard .buffy .dove and rainbow and.dj moth boy he played to nemo track on sat night
I think we all try to please as far as posible, given time restraints, client base and limits on personal collections.......I like to think I have a very varied music collection of over 30,000 tracks, which I do, but there is always stuff I dont have.......or can't play because 1 request from a Dove and Rainbow 'newbie' for obscure Viking metal track up against 30 requests from regulars for Bon Jovi's 'You give love a bad name' is an open and shut case.......
having said that, been listening to a lot of BATHORY in the last 24 hours, and will be playig a lot more viking metal in the future....
the_nelson 20-02-2007, 02:01 PM am not happy bands like this dont get played downstairs at the nelson not even the new iron maiden cd on a sat night i think the dj is to blame as he should be playing new stuff as well as the classics
Firstly, thanks for the £10 on Saturday night. You really didn't need to. I go out every Monday to HMV and buy all the new releases and things missing from my collection (I don't agree with downloading music illegally). Spend over £100 every week! They love me at HMV:love: Just a pity they don't do a DJ discount like Virgin used to do :(
Secondly, I'm gonna have to stick up for Lez. He plays the old 'classics' because that's what I employ him to do. It's as simple as that. We're lucky enough to have 2 rooms, and so we can do 2 separate genres of rock on the same night. And that's the way I like it. All the DJs I employ have a specific mandate on what to play depending on the night/room.

Nope - I'll play it if you ask me. I play Nightwish anyway but never get requests for Sonata Arctica.
nightwish 20-02-2007, 08:30 PM moth boy
dont you get promos ? sent to you ??

yep, on Wild, BMG and Roadrunner mailing lists.
However, I'm useless at getting myself organised and sending the reaction sheets back on time, oops  So the amount they send me fluctuates accordingly. Roadrunner kicked me off last year for not replying in time, but have recently added me back.
Why?
Okay, who plays Viking Skull!!!!
:headband:
I gotta get my fix of the skull every now and then

A 'NEW ROCK' NIGHT is a cool idea and one I am planning as I write...totally new rock and metal and probably twice monthly, but let me look into the logistics......
However, the 'golden age' of rock was certainly without any doubt the Rebels and Roxy era.......Rebels was packed most nights, and Roxy's was so crammed you could not breath in its glorious period.
Rock has fragmented and diversified so much since the much narrower genres of the 80's and early 90's, it is going to be difficult to create something that has mass appeal, as each sub-genre in rock these days has only limited fan bases in any one area. Hence a 'new rock' night has to incorporate a lot of sub-genres which may, or may not, have a broad and universal appeal in its designated target market..
sorry, talking like a promoter with a banana up their ****.:hihi:

I've still got a few reaction sheets from years ago when I used to get stuff for a pirate station in London (RFL). Do you reckon that Geffen will wear it if I send one back saying that it had just been returned to me as undelivered, or will the fact that it's from 1989 be taking the mick too much :hihi:

Ask them, and tell them/prove you're a DJ basically ..... I had stuff sent to my place so that if the 'studio'* got raided, there'd still be records knocking about, but they always came in one of the DJ's names ........

Gorefest 13-08-2007, 03:53 PM Hi guys,
I'm a Dutch metal music fan. I moved to Sheffield last month and I am currently trying to get my bearings in the area. I am especially interested in finding places in Sheffield that I can go to A) buy albums and B) visit concerts.
Apart from the obvious (HMV, Virgin) I haven't come across any music shops yet that have a decent metal section, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction. As far as concerts are concerned, I understand that the Corporation puts some decent bands on stage from time to time, but I haven't seen any other venues around yet. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

No and no!
No where else really puts internationally known metal bands on and there is no where else to buy music since Noise Annoys shut down. Selfworth sold a bit, but that has also shut now. Stick to the internet!

Not strictly true - though Corp is obviously the main rock venue you get the occasional rock & punk band at The Plug (Hayseed Dixie last month, UFO coming up) and the Octagon plus cover bands of just about every major band at the Boardwalk. As regards music - might be worth looking in Record Collector in Broomhill which has a good rock (in its widest sense) section - though to be honest - most physical record shops seem on their way out since everyone started buying off tinternet/downloading .

Any other metal gigs coming up in the coming months? Or does West St Live have an online concert agenda or somesuch?

BDM are Death Metal now? News to me...
And Sepultura have just sacked Igor Cavalera. Sepultura without Max OR Igor is nothing more than a tribute band IMHO.

Sepultura and Soulfly are both very poor.
BDM describe themselves as death metal. That's good enough for me. I'm not someone who'll stand there any say, "Yeah, but you're not TRUE death metal."

I'll agree with that. I dug out "Schizophrenia" the other day for the first time in years ......... forgot how much I liked it when I was a kid!
Splodge_CRB 19-08-2007, 04:56 AM Sad thing about the metal scene in sheffield is people are quite happy to listen to ac/dc, led zep, iron maiden, metallica(enter sandman) etc. Once you start playing stuff which i consider good metal (death, early in flames, at the gates, anthrax, venom, mayhem, napalm death etc etc) you get a lot of people slagging you off. face it sheffields metal scene is so close minded and stangnant.
I feel your pain my friend :D
It's not that its stagnant, its just very difficult for deejays to get the right format of customers these days;) cant specialise anymore at weekends cos you just cant enough pure metalheads to fill the place up and you'd end up with the same ole problem, look at the dissension already on here *albeit goodnaturedly*.Trouble is we just cant stop the classic/punk/goth/new/alt/death rockers from drinking together :o
Would be nice though to have a screaming up yer knickers rock night with no first year student asking for Bob Dylan or stairway just as you've got everyone pounding the dancefloor
*If you turn the music up and mouth swear words while smiling they wander off happily thinking you're going to play their request, later you can swear you played it and they must have been in the bog or talking....see? so much nicer than knocking them unconscious......;)
Carcass 19-08-2007, 10:26 AM Erm, if you want Death Metal then come along to Stormblast, every Thursday night at the Nelson (Furnival Gate, top of the Moor).
Death/Black/Doom/Thrash. No Metallica or Power Metal.

When did you go? Note that the Uni RockSoc are the ones who fill Stormblast up (and they're on holiday...)
Stormblast is awesome but there's no market for anything bigger IMHO. I'd love to get Stocky to DJ upstairs at Corp again and have Emperor, Aborted, Carcass etc. played there on a Saturday but it ain't gonna happen.
