View Full Version : What type of restaurant does sheffield need?
khizman 01-01-2007, 05:38 PM I know sheffield reasonably well, there are numerous chinese buffet restaurants, what type of restaurant does sheffield really need?
Another buffet place but with different cuisine?
A different type of cuisine altogether?
scarby 01-01-2007, 05:42 PM Not another fast food joint.
How about an Icelandic place, can't remember seeing one of those anywhere.
RosyRat 01-01-2007, 05:44 PM One, just one, that's all I ask that doesn't have piped music. I don't care what type of food they serve, whether it's a buffet, carvery or table service, just as long as I can sit in peace and chat with my friends without someone else's choice of banal pop row ruining my evening.
Strix 01-01-2007, 05:47 PM surely it depends on the location?
where did you have in mind?

Location depends on the type of restuarant surely :p
Strix 01-01-2007, 06:02 PM depends on availability of property and your budget ;)
carcrash 01-01-2007, 06:12 PM How about somewhere with the potential to get a michelin star
Vulcan B2 01-01-2007, 06:29 PM Somewhere selling REAL food. Fresh, simple, good, no rubbish.
Strix 01-01-2007, 06:40 PM Somewhere selling REAL food. Fresh, simple, good, no rubbish.
I'll vote for that too :)
how about somewhere where we can have a civilised night out?
the nightlife in sheffield is easily ruined by the drunkards that think a night out means over indulging  somewhere a bit 'pre-theatre-ish'?
Jennie80 01-01-2007, 06:42 PM Somewhere marketing low calorie, low fat food but which is DELICIOUS! They have loads in America, why not here???
Strix 01-01-2007, 06:49 PM ah, that would be a great money spinner - for the lunchtime market :)
Hazel 51 01-01-2007, 06:51 PM Somewhere selling REAL food. Fresh, simple, good, no rubbish.
I agree, not too many frills, not over priced, but a nice quiet restaurant, serving traditional english food in a setting where you can hold a conversation without shouting.

Ha, that reminded me of this - the comments are priceless.

Waffer 01-01-2007, 07:11 PM How about an English one.......Now that would be a novelty
khizman 01-01-2007, 07:14 PM Somewhere selling REAL food. Fresh, simple, good, no rubbish.
Like what though?
kitty123 01-01-2007, 07:35 PM a good fish resturant, a good fine curry house and a child friendly non scratchy resturant
Mandem 01-01-2007, 08:36 PM What Sheffield lacks is a good old fashioned English type eaterie, selling things like fresh cooked roast meals, meat and potato pie, corned beef hash, shepherds pie, good fish and chips and similar, everything seems to be foreign or "all day breakfasts" . If you go to other cities they seem to have good sit down cafe/restaurants selling english food.

There was one, it as called "mash house" and it was one division street. it was rubbish, the food was well cooked but it was dull and lacked atmos. The type of food they did was typical english food, which imo is boring, when i go to a restaurant i like to have food that i couldnt cook at home with ease.
ANDIM68 01-01-2007, 09:13 PM Many others posted this, and agree with them all. A place that sells good old fashioned English food.
never wrong 01-01-2007, 09:15 PM give the Black Bull in Ecclesfield a go, it as very good set meals and a la carte nice prices london and paris trained chef all english meals if you want all cooked on the premises no frozen ingredients. just had very exspensive refurb it is no smoking in all rooms anybody put off by the reputation dont be, believe me it is a completely different atmosphere, give it a try and spread the word
A clean one with pleasant staff would be a novelty.

see the post above your post the Black Bull is clean and spotless and the staff are great
Not tried it, but it shall be added to ones list of eateries to be sampled.
bagger 01-01-2007, 10:25 PM Agree with the English food restaurant but a good vegetarian one would be great.
marmite 01-01-2007, 10:31 PM Somewhere selling REAL food. Fresh, simple, good, no rubbish.
i can name a few which meet all of those.
marmite 01-01-2007, 10:32 PM What about a resturant dedicated to soup...that could be interesting
susiepoosie 01-01-2007, 11:57 PM A Yo Sushi bar would be great, the japanese place on London road is a bit too formal for me. Yo Sushi has a little rotating conveyer belt in the centre and you can just pick off the dishes of food you fancy the look of! Brilliant and very healthy!!
babyboom 01-01-2007, 11:57 PM Agree with the English food restaurant but a good vegetarian one would be great.
Was going to say the same but one that caters for vegans too, and by that I mean a choice of more than one dish.
owlface 02-01-2007, 01:05 AM A proper steak house that offers a good choice of quality cuts cooked by chefs that know what they're doing. All we have now are pub/restaurants that serve a small piece of poorly cooked rubber with a few frozen chips and some limp salad.
Stenner 02-01-2007, 01:07 AM I agree - a decent vegetarian restaurant with vegan options too. I also get fed up of being offered only one dish on a menu. It would be nice to have a decent choice.
Are there any vegetarian restaurants left in Sheffield? There used to be a really good one :) in Sharrowvale Road some years ago, but I know it closed :( .
country_girl 02-01-2007, 01:15 AM What about a Greek restaurant, Saganaki cheese, mmmmmmmmm
poppins 02-01-2007, 01:16 AM An outback steak house
purdyamos 02-01-2007, 02:37 AM I agree - a decent vegetarian restaurant with vegan options too. I also get fed up of being offered only one dish on a menu. It would be nice to have a decent choice.

Look out for the next Kumquat Mae meet! It's on Abbeydale Road. They have a set menu, but it's based on what's fresh and good on the day at the market. They're very good. Even the meat eaters are satisfied with the place. Keep your eyes peeled on the Evenings Out section.

This is what we need. If any veggies go to Hull I recommend sourcing this place out! You choose the menu if you are first to book - they will do any country and theme it!
I also went to a brilliant restaurant in Northampton that let you pick what you wanted and it was cooked on a plate in front of you (think it was Lebanese but sheiks and the one on south road are nothing like it) My mate only liked meat so he had a pile of meat and I am veggie so I had a pile of vegs whilst the others had something in between.
Star24* 04-01-2007, 12:36 PM Somehwere that has organic meat, you never know what your eating! I was wanting to go out tonight for a nice healthy meal but honestly can't thing of anywhere that does fresh healthy meals! Any ideas anyone?!!

If you ask this kind of question, I take it, you're not a chef, are you ?
I too would like to see more 'cook from fresh' type of restaurant. Whatever the type of category of food. Whether it's ethnic, or British Modern. Though, I think this type of restaurant is sadly not possible near this region. (I don't know why it doesn't happen here, but the owners are either out to make money, than to feed the masses, and feed them well.) Since we're in Yorkshire, we should be able to source good local ingredients, you know ? A lot of ingredients are imported. So it is rare to cook from fresh fresh.
I think for Sheffield, people don't think health, but more on quantity, than quality, which I feel is kinda wrong. We're definitely a city which dines out for special occasions, and not dining out for an everyday meal.
I think if we had a 'from fresh ingredient' type of restaurant at a good decent Sheffield price. Then people will flog to it. It doesn't have to be fancy, but just decent, and fresh. Something creative, which people cannot cook at home, but decent enough to be worthy of dining out for. At the right price, people will flog to it.
On the point of Yo Sushi, I hope we don't get one of those here. Cos I feel such places are always too manufactured just like any other chain. Sushi in Japan are literally made from fish caught and cut that day. We don't have this kind of infrastructure in place in the UK anyway. Sheffield is definitely in the wrong place for this type of cuisine to happen.

Hi,
Regardless of whether or not you are correct in your supposition that you know what Sheffield needs, I think, when it comes to eateries, that the crucial factor in its success will be whether it provides what Sheffield wants.
Regards,
Ade

My brother knows the folks who run it - top place.
Personally I'd like to see an *Indian* veggie restaurant in Sheffield
e3sa934 09-01-2007, 12:47 AM Korean. I'm rather fond of it, nearest is manchester or birmingham at present.

Thanks for this. I've never heard of it before but it looks a good place. I've clicked the link and looked at the menu etc and it is mostly vegetarian or vegan - wonderful.
May check it out later this week.
guysbs 09-01-2007, 10:14 AM a lebanese restaurant, greek, north african such as morrocan. Otherwise just high quality english restaurants serving good seafood, lamb and other things which aren't that easy to do yourself at home with a short preparation time.

7hills 11-01-2007, 10:19 AM is there a Moroccan restaurant in sheffield? if not we need one!
czechmate 11-01-2007, 11:04 AM A Czech restaurant, ha ha.
Or maybe a European theme restaurant with traditional foods from different European countries. A small selection of well cooked (as in traditionally cooked and authentic taste) traditional/national dish's from all EU member states, I would go somewhere like that.

Hi Komal
Thanks for your advice - it does fabulous food :D !! We called in for sarnies and drinks this afternoon, very good value, £15 for the three of us.
We're planning a return visit for an evening meal very soon  .

Hi,
Isn't the well known 'Sheikh's' on Glossop Road a Lebanese restaurant?

cool, perhaps I saw you! I remember people coming in saying they heard about us on the forum, i was in the kitchen with red hair :hihi:
evening food is amazing, we've just started doing really delicious meals, a good vegetarian and vegan one would be the aubergine rolls stuffed with red rice and vegetables, served with salsa verde! delicious :)
