probably asking a very obvious question but..i have been looking through my lease agreement and see there is no mention of giving notice before the lease period is up..but it does say the landlord can give me two months notice at any time. Does this mean I have the same right. I know people are going to say ask your landlord, but just wanted to ask someone else first as i do actually want to put my notice in thanks
I don't think anyone can answer the question without reading the lease. If you're not sure, the CAB would be able to take a look and advise you. If you're a student the university's student advice centre may also be able to help.
thanks andy, will go and ask the relevant questions

If you have a 12 month lease without a 'break' in the contract, then i assume he will expect you to do either of the following:
1. See through the term of the lease
2. Give notice, but pay a penalty.
3. See if he will accept you finding somebody else to take over
the current lease. (not leaving him without a tenant)
4. Maybe if the landlord has been grossly negligent in his management, the you could argue breach of contract.
Still again, the lease needs to be looked at. The lease signed normally means just that, you have to see out the term unless any of the above apply. Depends on your circumstances really.
If you are telling him you are leaving because in 2 weeks time you will be bare-a$$ naked because you have no money and have to sell your clothes, he might take to the idea, as he probably wouldnt want you there, not paying rent, and him having to try and evict you!
