This pub looks like it could be a potential goldmine? Am I losing the plot? I know its been closed for ages...but

Went past there this morning and the whole place has now been flattened. Will probably be flats or a pair of houses before long.

Yes Meaks, apparently letters were circulated around the immediate area asking about any objections to the building of flats.
As most of the residents in that area are elderly, wonder how many replied/ objected?

It is sad that there are about 30 pubs a day being lost in UK.
Most pubs are large buildings with a large patch of land, and the foreign owners of these pubs see them as real estate, and if they can't make a fortune by working the tennant into the ground while they keep them tied to their expensive prices, then they just sell it to a developer.

In recent times we have seen the loss of
1 ) The jolly Buffer / Classic rock bar ( demolished )
2 ) The Red Lion heeley ( boarded up )
3 ) Brincliffe Oaks ( boarded up with for sale )
4 ) Yorkshire Grey ( about to be a new carpark )

There are lots of places in town where traditional pubs will be swept away without being replaced. Nelson, Yorkshireman's arms, Casbah, Pump, Moorfoot tavern etc..

Just what we need: fewer pubs and more flats!

Planners and property developers are quite happy making Sheffield look like any other city in the country, or in Western Europe. What a stultifying lack of imagation. Grrr... :(

What do you expect if people would rather sit at home with a few cans from the local supermarket? Pubs are like any other business - if they make money they stay open, if they don't they close....

Just commenting it's sad that little bits of history have to go. I'm not trying to be precious but pubs have character and are a focal point whereas flats are flats are flats.

Like any business that's on the rocks, if it means something to you, use it or lose it. Unfortunately I never got the chance to go there.

Anyone have any memories of the place they'd like to share?

"While planning permission is needed to convert pubs into homes, full planning permission is not normally required to demolish a pub or convert a pub into a shop or restaurant. CAMRA wants to prevent pubs being demolished or converted to another use without planning permission. It is after all only right that local people are given a chance to object to the loss of their local pub."

All that's perfectly fine Meaks, But I suspect in many cases the terraced houses which once surrounded many old pubs are now gone and they are not sustainable without a large cross section of locals of working age.

What annoys me more, is when traditional pubs are ruined when their partitions are removed, as the owners seek to get rid of all the old customers in an effort to chase the younger higher spending customers. This is why pubs like the Red Lion at heeley changed from a the centre of the community pub into a drugs den in 6 years, then shut down by the police ready for demolition/redevelopment.
