I might be a bit thick, well a lot thick actually, but I cant work out whether this walk starts at Grindleford or Fox House! Also, does it looks to me like it ends at Totley, so would someone who arrives in their own car have to get from Totley to Grindleford/Fox House to pick their car back up?
Also, I notice that there is a no booze clause. Has the unofficial Walkers policy regarding booze changed in the 2 weeks that I`ve been out of the country? I`m only 1/2 joking Mr Smith when I say that on certain recent walks it has been a pleasure to fit a walk in to the pub and cafe visits that us regulars have experienced!
Anyway, to help me decide whether I can attend or not, would you mind advising this pub-loving, non public-transport person what he is to do regarding these 2 dilemnas?
Cheers

Hello Scubz - Welcome back to blighty!

I think because it's a linear walk it'll be easier to go on the train/bus. There's a couple of us meeting at the train station (myself and Taxman), so if you want to join us there, feel free!

The walk starts at either Sheffield Midland or Dore Station at the times given.
People who prefer to 'Cut out' the hill walk from Grindleford to Longshaw Lodge could take a bus to Fox House, then wait at Longshaw Lodge to join the group.
If a car is used to get to Fox House. People can join the group, leaving it when the opportunity arises by taking the old Dronfield - Hathersage Bridle Road back to the Fox House Inn.

This Bridle Road joins Hathersage Road roughly fifty yards from the Inn, but below where the Hound Kirk Road (Roman Road) merges with the main road.

A car can be left close to Dore Station or close to my home and collected after the walk is completed.

Pub loving people are welcome to visit any pub en-route. As I do not drink beer, I would advise, that they enquire from someone else who does regarding the locations of the pubs!!! (I do suggest a flask of tea or coffee).

If you want to arrange with me to: To leave your car at Fox House. Join the walk at Longshaw Lodge, Completing it. I'll arrange transport from Totley Brook back to Fox House for you.

Finally if you want me to walk it for you, I will, provided that the weather is OK.

Join it. You will enjoy it. Albert

The weather forecast looks pretty reasonable for Sunday **touches nearest bit of available wood**, so this should be a good walk. :)

Some of us are meeting at Sheffield station at about 11.30 am (myself, (plus guest!),Taxman, Grissom). Feel free to join us - we might look a bit bleary-eyed on a Sunday morning, but we're lovely people really!

The weather is perfect for a lovely walk.
If you are coming and you are very welcome, may I suggest that you bring Binoculars and Camera.
Its a bit nippey so wrap up warm.
Train leaves Sheffield 11.25 and DORE 11.45 this Morning.
(Better early to get a seat on the train).

Well, despite the minor confusion over train times, we all gathered for this fantastic walk! :D

Albert, Taxman, Andrea, myself and Peter (who we met on the train and decided to join us:) ), set out from Grindleford, and after the initial fairly steep - but mercifully short - climb, it was a beautiful walk over the moors. The scenery was stunning (oh, I wish I owned a camera), and the weather was perfect - sunny, fairly warm and only a light breeze. We had a tea-stop at Longshaw, then strode out again over the moors before dropping down into Totley for a well-earned pint. (The muddiest part of the whole walk was crossing the football pitch in Totley!)

Thanks to Albert for organising it, and for all the info he provided along the route.

Answers to questions raised during last Sundays walk:
Totley Tunnel is 3 Miles 950 Yards long.
It is the second longest railway tunnel in the United kingdom.
Construction work started from Totley and Padley (Grindleford) at roughly the same time. This was September, 1888. Both sides met on 19 October, 1892.
The first train was a goods train on 6 November 1893 and the first passenger train was on 16 May 1894.
The first passenger train organised by: 'Ellesmere Tents of Independant order of Rechabities' which started it's jouney from Rotherham. A second train behind coming from Sheffield. Each of these trains pulled 15 Coaches with 12 or 13 passengers in each coach.
May I suggest that any other questions should be put to forum users. because I'm certain someone will know a great deal more than myself.

If Totley Tunnel is only the second longest, which is the longest UK rail tunnel? I'm guessing Box Tunnel in Wiltshire

Totley Tunnel is the longest tunnel within England that runs under land for its entire length¹.

Is the longest maybe in Wales? Or maybe one that goes under water?
Does the Channel Tunnel count?

OK, got it.

The Severn Tunnel is 4 miles 624 yds. 2¼ miles are under the river.

I said, 'Second longest in the United Kingdom'. The one running under the River Seven is the longest.
