View Full Version : Advice needed - Walkley em16uk 18-09-2004, 11:47 Any advice? thanks Martin_s 18-09-2004, 12:05 I've lived in 2 houses in that area and I'm considering moving back there so it's a good place.. Things to be aware of.. There are some areas that are notorious for breaks ins so good security and neighbours who look out for each other are a must.. Not a massive amount of shops but there's morrisons down the hill and a few pubs that are ok... transport is reasonable and you're not too far from town... All in all, you could do worse. :) Rich 18-09-2004, 13:09 Too many hills in Walkley though. We lived on Walkley Bank Road for 20 years until just under 7 years ago, and walking up for the 95 was a nightmare, right up Fern Road, right up Providence Road and then up Thrush St to get the bus near the old Bole Hill school, all that uphill walking plays havoc with my back! It's even further to walk up to Crookes for the 52 if you want the other end of Town to where the 95 goes. StarSparkle 18-09-2004, 16:24 Originally posted by Rich Too many hills in Walkley though. But they're great for exercise! StarSparkle :) JoeP 18-09-2004, 16:28 It's hilly..... We've lived here since 1986, and it's OK. South Road has definitely gone down in terms of quality of shops and such since we moved in, but the Morrisons in Hillsborough barracks isn't bad if you live at our end of Walkley. Some decent pubs, 95 and 123 buses are OK, and the 52 will also get you to town (eventually). There's also the 31 and 32 that run through Walkley. Walkley has a library - again, IMHO not as good as it was but that's typical of the Sheffield Library Service in general. I think the only reason it's still open is that it's a Carnegie Library and so is probably awkward to shut...:) Mixed housing - some new builds popping up all over the place and a mixture of housing that covers detached, semis, terraces and flats. JoeP 18-09-2004, 18:58 Originally posted by Andy What's a Carnegie Library? These were libraries that were set up with funding from the financier / philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. He made a vast fortune and had the desire to help communities develop themselves via self-education and such - hence the Carnegie libraries. The movemnet started in the US, and ran for about 30 or 40 years up to teh end of WW1 or thereabouts. I haven't Googled this stuff, btw, so the dates might be wrong. Anyway, Carnegies basically accepted requests for grants from councils and cities for funds for the libraries. The local community supplied the land and 10% of the money, I think. There is a plaque on teh wall of Walkley Library commemorating Carnegie. Thus showing that millionaires used to be really useful..... Joe seanmac 28-09-2004, 13:17 I have just moved there a few weeks ago. Seems pretty nice but I have noticed a lot of cop cars coming up and down the road I'm on. Makes ya think - might be a station nearby??? sccsux 28-09-2004, 17:02 Originally posted by seanmac I have just moved there a few weeks ago. If you're near the bottom of Walkley Lane, you're about 2 mins from Hammerton Road Police station (Part Time)! Cars are always in & out! robbie 28-09-2004, 17:29 Lived here for over a year. Have lived in Crookes and Commonside and Walkley tends to have more locals and less students. Its a lot friendlier imo. pros: Netto (don't laugh. very cheap and a lot of stuff is different. Freedom, Florist and Walkley Cottage are quality pubs (Springvale just round the corner as well) Good take aways. On South Road you have an Italian, Indian Take Away an restaurant, 2 Chinese 9one doing fish and chips as well), Pizza place, Chippie (good when open-not as good as Brian's though) and a grill place. Several useful shops (Post Office, Chemist, Levits etc) Fairly quite in the week 95 runs (ALLEGEDLY) every 6 minutes (123 every 15 in the day). It only takes 10-15 minutes to get into town (if no bad traffic) and about 30 minutes to walk in. Its a lot quicker to get into down by 95 than walking up the hill for 52. Green 52 also goes all the way down walkley Road into Hillsborough. Pretty safe at night. Cons: South Road looks drab, rundown and dirty. If you live down from South Road it gets worse. Although its only 5-10 minutes to the Tram stop. You often get little *&*&^^%% walking up and down those roads looking for trouble. Like any area it depends where abouts in it you live. Its not as posh as Crookes but cheaper. You are less likely to get students being sick on your bins but more likely to noisy on a Saturday Night/Sunday morning around the streets. There are also a lot more (*&&^%%$ than in Crookes. You are more likely to find a nicer house if you are renting also. elf 29-09-2004, 13:26 Have lived in Walkley for nearly a year and love it, just wish we could afford to buy a house here. It is close enough to Hillsborough to use Morrisons and the other stuff there but far enough up the hill to be fairly quiet and have good views. People are very friendly and its got a good feel to it:) em16uk 29-09-2004, 15:32 Thanks guys - any advice on Whitehouse Lane (i think it is)? thanks - how far is it down to morrissons etc? thanks sccsux 29-09-2004, 17:13 Originally posted by em16uk Thanks guys - any advice on Whitehouse Lane (i think it is)? thanks - how far is it down to morrissons etc? thanks About 10-15 mins walk to Morrisons, Hillsborough etc (all downhill - uphill back though)! Actually, WH La is towards the bottom end of Walkley, so it's not too bad for walking back up from Hillsborough. The City centre is about the same distance away too (there's also a tram stop within 2 minutes walk)! Hope This Helps. robbie 29-09-2004, 17:26 I know soemone who lives down there 9if not 2 people-I forget) and its ok. very handy for the trams.... |
