View Full Version : Being turned away at 25!

Went out into sheffield centre last night, which I have not done for ages, could not get over how many police were about! It's nice to see them walking around though.

Decided we would go to the casbar so got there early to avoid the queues just to be turned away because my freind who is 23 apparently looked 17 ! The doorman looked younger than she did!

I cannnot believe that we are now going to have to start carrying ID around because we can't get in the bars at the age of 23+! I could see thier point if we were drunk and they wanted to make an excuse up, but we had only one drink so far that night!

Has anyone else had these problems? Ended up at a naff club instead and went home early!

I'm really sick of not having enough late bars and having to be squeezed into the few noisy and cramped bars full of people who are hammered and rude.. and having to queue for the pleasure of it!

More late bars in sheffield please, that have enough space for you to breathe!

I think I must be getting old....... lol

i'm afraid since the events of the last few weeks bar owners are frightend to death of being snidely caught out like we were, everyone that enters the bar/club is a potential spy,as its now know the coppers use people that look of age...sad but true

I have probs with same issue.
Take I.D everywhere with me now -just in case! (I'm 26yr!)

Hard to look on the bright-side, when you intention was to have a good night out. When all else fails........

All u can do is
"Be flattered!" -at least!
( Bouncer who turned you away is preserving your
youthfull looks!!! -A skinfull of booze is no good for wrinkles!)

Or Do what I do (If 4get I.D)
& 'Throw a right wobbler!

Some bar staff and bouncers clearly need glasses.

I remember back when I was 23, the Landlady of the Park Hotel at Middlewood kept giving me funny looks all night cos she was "convinced" was under-age.... Daft old bat :loopy:

I wasnt bothered as it was a compliment in my eyes. If I look 10 years younger when I'm 50 I'll be well chuffed.

Stop whingeing and take some id!!!

It all seems a bit sudden them asking for ID everywher though. I remember the days when we used to go out at 17 years old and never get asked for ID. The first time I ever god "ID'd" was on my 20th birthday. Needless to say, I always take my driving licence out with me - handy photocard.

remember being the stone house a few weeks since, when 2 police people walked through.........

all of a sudden everybody was asking for ID!!

now i'm 21 and very rarely have ID on me, so i was refused a drink even though the bouncers had already let me enter, shocking

anyways 2 minutes later, every1 was allowed to be served again

shocking behaviour

Evei

yep I shall just have to carry ID around on me from now on, It just seems really weird as I've never been Id'ed in my life even when I was 15 and going to clubs in Manchester......must be looking younger now than I was 10 years ago! ( I wish!)

I guess it's time I get my old paper driving license changed to the new card version!

I suppose it's a complement looking younge than I am, shame the kids at school always add 5 years onto my age!

i was turned down loads of times the other night and only got served in 2 or 3 bars. ended up all right though we spent the night in westway on west street because we got served. It was annoying though not getting served, i would have complained but then again i'm only 16 so i can't!!

Well if you go out underage drinking sometime you have pay the price, and a night in Westway sounds about fair to me. I hope you've learned your lesson.

It depends how often you go out and where you go. I've never been ID'd in a supermarket either. I think you will find if you go out in the centre of town you will more than likely get ID'd at the moment.

Throwing a wobbler sometimes isnt the right thing to do... as someone who is younger would do that kinda thing (throw a paddy lol)... If your old enough to go into a club/pub then you would resepct the doormans decission... and walk away...

I know this is frustrating for you as it for me too at the age of 33...

I was told by a friend years ago now (who happened to be a doorman)... To always remain calm as it can go against you if you go over the top and argue the case...

What is also annoying is when your stood at the door being asked for ID... when you know full well they've already let the underage drinkers in....

im 21 and have been id all my life. when i meet people they think im around 17! i hate it, and it makes me look stupid infront of everyone when i go into bars etc.

the other week i went to meet a friend in a pub in town and had my id on me, but he refused to let me in! i couldnt believe it, it was my driving license as well, i asked for the manager and she just said it was up to the bouncer and she couldnt do anything. i mean, its bad enough getting id anyway, but when they wont accept it i just dont no what to do!

I ended up having a chat with the bouncer and telling him I thought it was amusing as I teach kids that are older than some already in there! Was not horrible as I don't see the point in the end his just trying to do his job.

I remember going in the Blue bell at Hackenthorpe when I was 21, I went to the bar cos my husband had gone to the loo. The barmaid refused to serve me. When I told my husband he just laughed and said I should be flattered.
I went in Varsity a few months ago with a friend and the doorman asked for our Id, when I smiled at him and said "Thankyou very much- I love you" he replied "Not you duck, I can tell you're old enough!" I wanted to cry......

Well I still get asked for ID and I take it with me every time. Its not really that much hassle, get a CitizensCard or ProofofAge card, they are pretty cheap.

On other threads people are moaning about kids in bars, now they're moaning about being asked for ID - you cant have it both ways and I know which I'd prefer!!

I get asked for ID ALL the time, as I mentioned in other threads I got asked when buying alcoholic truffles in Thorntons the other week. I didn't think that was so bad, until my teenage sister broke it to me today that you only have to be 16 to buy them.

I know I'm going to get Id'd despite being 23 so I always carry it around with me. Its just embarrassing when some kid that looks about 12 walks straight in behind you.

Was on west st last night .film crew and police were outside Sharkeys asking for id

Sadly i wasn`t asked for id even though I pleaded and even offered money

Remember a few years ago we were out celebrating my identical twin brothers 22nd birthdays when a doorman refused entry to one brother unless he had id but not the other one .
Took a while to explain to him but eventually got in.

The whole ID thing comes from the new license laws that place 'THE PROTECTION OF MINORS' as the top priority.

The government have given the police the go-ahead to stage under-age 'stings' on all licensed premises (Off Licenses included). This means that the coppers can send young police cadets in to bars and clubs and entrap the staff into serving under-age persons.

The Sheffield police have been particularly quick to adopt this new technique of dealing with licensed premises.

Obviously this is controversial because the police are actually setting bar staff up to break the law!

However this process seems to be working, as I personally don't know of any bar, pub or club that hasn't tightened it's ID policy in the past few months.

I reckon this is here to stay. So for those of us lucky enough to look young enough to be asked; don't forget your passport!

Not been ID'd since i was about 17 (8 years ago) but i'm happy with the "Challange 21" policy. I've started using it when sending a delivery out. Customer will now be told on the phone if they look under 21 they'll have to prove 18. A few obvious young 'uns tried to order recently and had to refuse service when it got there.

Not actually got any photo ID myself though, old school driving licence, no studo card, never needed a portman group before, nearest i'd have is a credit card.

I think the police and cameras on Fri night were actually to do with the bouncer licensing laws as I saw police giving what looked like tickets to at least half a dozen bouncers over the night.

I went in S1 at the top of west street on the same night (I was forced okay), they have signs up saying that anyone under the age of 30 will be asked for id. Now that's just ridiculous, although I didn't see them ask anyone for id.

I guess that folks like you are why the rest of people in this thread have to carry ID? ;)

I've never been carded in my life - I guess in my youth they were less bothered and nowadays it just won't happen. Having said that I carry the photocard part of my driving licence in my wallet anyway so if I were to meet the world's most short sighted buncer - no problems.

I assume that the people in Westway, if they're reading this, will be very afraid that the folks who police the under-age drinking haunts are reading this as well!

I work in a bar in town and its £80 fine if we serve underage ppl. So i ID every1 who looks under 25 as it is not worth the risk.

I get a sitter for my kids then go out and see girls only a couple of years older than my 13yr old! They act so immature too. I know there aren't many things for them to do at night but if they experience everything so young ( including sex ) what is there left for them to taste when they ARE old enough. I'm not saying I never drank underage but its getting rediculous now. As for the bouncers, well I agree with them being registered, otherwise if they don't know how to handle a situation and defuse it sensibly then they're just thugs. I have friends who are doormen and although they look mean mothers they are really nice blokes ( one woman too ) who want people to have a trouble free night.

Not sure i agree with you there. Being "Registered" isn't an indication of a member of doorstaff's skills or pesonality. I've not worked on a door under the national scheme but have been "registered" as a member of door staff within Leeds City Council since 1998. I've changed quite a lot since then, my "registration" has expired but i could (and have) worked a door much better now based on experience and attitude than i did when i was first "registered".

Being registered does not make you able to handle a situation, nor does not being regitered make you a thug.

I agree about the Challenege 21 thing, and I don't mind being asked for I.D as long as it's because they think I'm actually under 21.. Some bouncers use it because they don't like the look of you. I never normally get I.D'd, but last Sunday when we went out I was asked twice! Fine by me, it makes me grin :D

I'm 19, so I don't take offence if someone wants some I.D!

And to the people under 18 that are complaining about being I.D'd.. Are you serious?

yeah at corporation in town, you go in, but then once your in they sometimes ask you for id before serving you a drink!!
for ****s sake!!
firstlt they ask for id at the door, so theres no need to ask again because the people obviously are over 18 o have some kind of fake id
secondly they ask me who is 18 and i have id but noooooooo its not good enough for them when its a railcard which you can only obtain from having a passsport anyway
and third;ly who the hell would take their passport with them drinking??? it would get stolen very quickly and then what would you do:(

Jayne
04-04-2005, 12:57
I've been asked for ID in supermarkets about 3 times in the last year, once when i was with my mum.

I'm not quite sure how this challenge 21 thing works. How do you define looking under 21. I am 24 and don't think I look under 21 so by this rule I wouldn't have to prove I'm 18??

I tend to have ID anyway as I have a photo driving licence.

Got followed round a supermarket by someone who clearly thought i was too young to buy the brandy to put in my tiramisu - in that case I'd much rather have been asked than been treated as a "suspicious" person.

Deavon

I still don't understand why people get angry about this ID issue:

By law the only ID that bar staff can accept are picture driving license, passport, or Portman Group 'Prove It' cards. Nothing else.

If you show your ID at the door that doesn't mean that you wont have to show your ID again at the bar. Don't forget the individual who serves is liable, not the doorstaff.

In fact you should expect to get asked each time you come to the bar. You may get served by a different staff member, your face might not be recognised from your previous purchase.

Most of all if your get an attitude about being asked, will that not raise suspicion? What's the problem if you can prove your age properly????

If somebody tries to argue then first of all i am not goin to give you a drink unless you can prove you are old enough. then i will not serve you again. and i will tell everybody else not to serve u.

So for the sake of reachin into you wallet and showing your ID, is it worth the hassle of havin an attitude?

Deavon

Absolutely. Nothing worse than aggro from customers.

Why do people always assume they have a right to be served no matter how rude they are!
Most people are nice but it just takes one determined punter to ruin your night.

Most of the time the people who start to give off when they are asked for ID immediately look about 14 because of the way they behave!!

Come back when you can:

a) Prove your age
b) Act your age

I haven't had a problem with my ID up here, but back down in Reading I would come across the odd bouncer who wouldn't accept my photocard driving licence because its a provisional one . I don't have a passport and they stopped accepting 'Prove It' cards in the area because there were so many fake ones floating about (not that I had one anyway, because my driving licence had always been sufficient).

I didn't get an attitude about being asked in the first place but by the third pub I was refused entry to I was getting pretty peed off, being 21/22 at the time and not being allowed in anywhere despite having perfectly legitimate ID. Why do people not understand that a provisional photocard driving licence is just as much ID as a full one?

Deavon
07-04-2005, 13:10
As it should be. We have similar.

About 4 or 5 weeks ago S1, BRB and a few other bars all had police set them up with under-agers. If the bars then try to protect themselves by asking anyone in their twenties to show ID you can hardly blame them.

The police want results so they use cadets who can be mistaken for being 'of age'. Once caught the bar staff is fined and the pub possibly closed with the licensee taken to court.

I really don't see the problem people have with id cards - it takes literally 10 seconds to get it out of your wallet and have them check it!

Just as a car driver should check the seat belts of their passengers, the bouncers are maintaining the safety of their clientele, as well as their own livelyhoods.

The only negative aspect i have is that i think forking out £30 for a provisional liscence is a bit too much as i've no intention of driving for another 2 years tops. I'm not taking my passport as it's too valuable and would get in a state, so i have to rely on my portman card - usually the places i like to go accept that.

I have worked on a bar and so i can comment on both sides of the story - me being fined £80 and losing my job would NOT have been cool just so you can get your booze.

The state of the fake id scams is shocking. I used to work somewhere where i would see (and confiscate) around one fake id a week working say 3-5 shifts. You get them for £10 off internet sites and the backs of magazines. Some of them are damn good quality too.

Bouncers might like to look at:

I have to say, working in the university bars I don't have this problem as everybody must show their university cards before they enter the building. But growing up in Manchester I used to go out drinking when I was 16. I found that I got Id-d alot less then than I do now (in Manchester, as Shef are alot less strict!). I know I look alot younger for my age so I don't care that I am being id-d. Plus I am only 19, so I still am under the scheme where you must look over 21. The only bad thing about it is that it is embarrassing unless they ask everbody else around you too! But I COMPLETELY understand it from the point of view of the bouncers+bar staff!

I had problems a few years back getting into a bar because the doorman said i looked under 18. When he said that i threw a right wobbler and after about 15 minutes or so of throwing this wobbler, the doorman said i could go, he said anyone that was under age would not throw a wobblers, How does that work?
It seem to be if they try to turn you away that you have do these sorts of things otherwise you won't get in, of course then again it could backfire and the doorman could call the manager and that would not be good.

I absolutely hate having to ask someone for their I.D! its so embarassing for me and for them! but I am required to because if i accidently serve someone who's under age then an inspector happens to come in and sees me doing that then the bar I work at could get charged a £1000 pounds! that's a lot of money and the bar just can't afford it because it's already on its last legs.

I think it's outrageous the amount of money they can fine you and what the police are doing is called entrapment! i thought it was illegal, but as they say, one rule for us, one rule for them.

I get asked for my ID every now and then and I'm 32. Got asked for it at the Common Room the other week and I showed the bouncer my CitizenCard which has one of those PASS holograms on it and is "supposed" to be one of the official proof of age cards.. and he wouldn't accept it! He asked for a driving license (which I don't have cos I dont drive).

In the end one of the other bouncers told him to let me in... but it was really annoying to have my ID refused.

I got asked for ID buying cigarettes. I am 22, but I have always looked younger though.
I like asking people for ID sometimes, its funny when they pretend to check their wallet/ pat their pockets then say "I left it at home".
People who kick off are just confirming that they are immature and obviously too young.
