View Full Version : Morrisons supermarket
I visited my local Morrisons recently that I haven't been to in quite a while. I have been doing the bulk of my shopping at Tesco's. Tesco staff are polite and welcome you and ask if you need any help packing your bags etc. The total opposite met me at Morrisons.
Without going into a long drawn - out tale I was greeted ( not ) at two checkouts by two very rude staff.
Has anyone else met with this?
The store is in Rotherham, Retail World.
Not in my local Morrison's at Heckmondwike. they are always pleasant and friendly and always ask if you want your goods packing.
And I thought Morrisons at Ecclesfield had the monopoly on surly staff!
PaulTansley 17-09-2004, 20:59 I use Ecclesfield but not had any problems, although the staff at the chicken den can be a little uninviting.
The check out girls are quite polite.
Morrisons @ Hillsborough seem to have a pretty miserable bunch.
And they're doing a pretty good job of running Safeways (on Infirmary Rd) into the ground (before they are forced to sell before the end of this month - cynical, me?)!
I find the staff @ Ecco to be pretty much OK ;-).
The only one I can't fault (as yet) is the one out on the Dearne Valley Parkway.

The only one I can't fault (as yet) is the one out on the Dearne Valley Parkway. I did my shopping there a few months ago on route from Donny to Sheffield and found it far to big.
You needed a flight to get round it.
The staff were orieght tha nose.
the one i last went to was at halfway it was a while ago when passin through with my parents and the staff are nice and friendly always say hi at the checkouts etc, the only ones i find annoying are the goons standing in the aisles next to huge trolleys of stuff destined for the shelves chatting away when you can see what you want on the trolley but have no hope of getting to it cos the stock on the shelf is long gone. Have never liked the hillsborough one though.

I help myself in these situations ;-)

But there are never enough of them. Last time we were in there it took fifteen minutes to do the shiopping and twenty minutes waiting to pay for it. Hillsboriugh store can be just as bad.
J_Horizontal 18-09-2004, 17:29 I shop at Sainsbury's. They make life taste better!. Wouldn't touch Morrisons with a barge pole (who's got a barge pole?? :-))

Now you go to my local Tesco then you could be second in the queue and still be there 15 minutes.
1Man&hisBMW 19-09-2004, 05:39 Heres one for size with Morrisons....
Went to buy a salad from the salad bar, and sees this nice looking potato salad mayo, though right I'll have that!
Chec over the ingredients carefully, potatos, onions and mayonnaise....perfect...
So I fill up 2 small boxes with this and other little bits from the salad bar... nice :)
Get home, hmm, this looks a bit weird.... that right SAUSAGE in the potato salad.....!! :o << I wouldn't make it look so dramatic if wasn't for the fact I don't eat it
Why do they cut it the exact same way as the potato!? The mis-label it! Its not easy to spot when its mayo-enriched!
Anyway, armed with my receipt, I went back into the store. Spoke to the duty manager.... convo as thus...
Erm, theres sausage in this, and there shouldn't be...infact I have just been back to the salad bar, and indeed the ingredients don't state sausage?
Maybe one just got into the tub?
No, the whole thing has it is, its not a case of mixed spoons.
Okay, well I will give you a refund and a £5 voucher.
No thanks, keep the voucher because I won't be shopping here again.
We make it all in house, I'm assured is was the wrongspoon in the box.
No, LOOK I have TWO boxes os salad, both with sausage, and the supplying box ALSO has it, with some quantity.
Oh right, erm we make it all in house I will make sure the staff get better training.
(thinks....what a load os b011ox)... Good don't let it happen again, I don't want your money - its the principle not your voucher.
Anyway..... theres the convo....
but you can imagine why I was so miffed. many years of carefully selecting what i can / can't eat and what do you know, Morrisons balls it up by mis-labelling their food. Good job it didnt have nuts in it if you had an allergy!
Morrisons, never again. First time and most certainly the last....roll on ASDA!
Agree with Morrisons staff being unhelpful, Went to Somerfield at White Lane the other day - was quite impressed with the helpful staff, including the checkout guy who explained in detail their loyalty scheme when i replied i didnt have a card... gonna start shopping there for a while and see how it goes (but still pop in sainsburys in crystal peaks for closing-time bargains :P ). Problem is they have masses of deals on cakes and I'm supposed to be on a diet
Everybody whom I have come into contact with that have worked for Morrisons have had nothing good to say about it. This might explain some of the miserable faces. :o
ToryCynic 19-09-2004, 22:07 Down here we are inbetween an Asda, a Morrisons and a Somerfield.
Usually, the weekly shop is done at Morrisons - and have found that the staff are usally half asleep and the food isn't all that either. Also, the staff seem to enjoy closing the check-outs when there are five or so people in the queue! "Sorry, we're closing"!!
Alex
As I work at Meadowhall, I use the Sainsburys there and despite being an insanely busy store at times, the staff are always really friendly!
Asda at Handsworth seems to have friendly staff, but Somerfield in town and Morrisons at Halfway have yet to convince me of their merits. I have two friends who work for two separate morrisons stores and they both dont have a decent word to say about the company.
funkyukgal 21-09-2004, 18:43 I shop at Morrisons at Halfway...they are alright, good for offers but only one problem about them is their MEAT!! Its foul! I bought chicken wings from them and next day it went off!! :gag: Apparently they have their own farms  not sure if thats true tho... maybe someone can clarify?
Asda for meat and morrisons for offers! Cant fault Asda.. love going late at night when the bread is fresh out of oven! Staff are always there help which is nice.
Apperently the safeway/morrisons on infirmary rd is to become a tesco when morrisons sell it off, according to last nights star.. yey I love tesco cheap and friendly and the foods not rancid it will save us trekking to abbydale road for our shopping in future
I am surprised at this news because I thought that particular site was to small for Tesco to take it on. I know Tesco own land that side of town and have been wanting to open up a site for quite a while now.

There are much smaller Tescos in Sheffield. I would guess that the Imfirmary Rd site is bigger than Ecclesall Rd and Shireclifffe Tescos, not to mention the terribly tiny Tesco on West St.
Yes this is my point. Those stores you mention have been there years. They already have a site at Southey that they tried to get shut of. The West street one is a Metro store which is a different format from the Superstores. A store the size of Infirmary Road would not be enough to compete with Morrisons effectively.
A.B.Yaffle 21-09-2004, 22:51 But the Safeways on Infirmary Rd and the Morrisons at Hillsborough Barracks have both been there for years now. That Safeway has always seemed very busy, so I don't see why Tescos wouldn't want it even though there is a Morrisons nearby. A lot of people find it more convient to shop at a slightly smaller store... and the Infirmary Rd site isn't really that small.
I'm more bothered by the fact that our local Jacksons is going to become a Sainsburys!
It's not a case of Morrisons been nearby because they could price match them quite easily but they would struggle to compete with range of products and demand with the smaller site
Tesco are wanting large stores these days. Extras or superstores with large non food areas. It doesn't matter how busy the shop is you can only get so many customers through the tills (depending on how many they have). There doesn't appear to be any scope for expansion on that site which is why I would be surprised to learn that they had puchased that store.
On the otherhand I know they have been trying to find a suitable location around Hillsborough area for a long time.
It is a foothold in the area but I wouldn't call it an ideal one.
Catcliffe morrisons not that good IMHO, deli staff take offence if you ask them to use tongs rather than their fingers (ungloved) to pick up items etc...
Check out staff seem ok - both there + at Hillsborough, but have to say they never seem to have enough checkout staff on. Last week 20 mins wait at checkout.
Tesco's much friendlier!
As for the safeway on infirmary road - Morrisons probably deliberately trying to ruin it's clientele as it's going to be a tescos.
Safeway on eccy road is undergoing it's transformation as we speak.
silverknight 22-09-2004, 21:38 Tesco used to have a branch in Hillsborough what is now Wilkinsons it closed when Safeway built the then new store in the arcade which it then sold when it built on Infirmary Road. The old Safeway site was then sold to Kiwi Save.
It will be interesting to see if Tesco will now sell the land at Penistone Road opposite the Wednesday ground.Maybe wednesday should buy it for a car park as on match days its badly needed.
I wonder if Asda will take a unit on Kilner Way (site of old bowling alley) once the developers move on site to bring it upto date
I sometimes go to hillsborough morrisons .
went to ecclesfield morrisons last saturday -never again it was like a football ground.
asda at chapeltown is about the best for staff courtesy and politeness.
i once cut my finger on a bus hand rail that had a spike in it and when i got to asda they immediately did a full first aid job on it.
also once when an elderley couple couldn't get home because none of the taxi companies were able to oblige them,
i told them to explain their plight to the costomer services
and the next minute, one of the staff was lifting their things in her car and taking them home.
i cant see anyone at morrisons doing that.
also theres a lot of fun at asda, ive seen the staff dressed up in all sorts of fancy dress -for charities and promotions etc.
the elderley guy on the door once dressed up as a fairy in a pink frilly dress.
and the guy on the cig counter once went in a vat of blancmange.

It is indeed. You'd think it was the Royal Mint with the amount of security around it tho!
markwebb 05-10-2007, 14:36 i used to work at Morrisons in Hillsbrough for about a year on the check out the staff are so missrable because of the supervisors treat them like rubbish you carnt have a drink of water its hard to go to the toilet the excuse is (i carnt get anyone to come on your till ) you never get breaks thats why the staff are so missrabe the job is Awfull i would never work there again:confused::mad:
fabulous_girl 05-10-2007, 14:46 I did our shopping at morrissons this week. Not that keen, prefer asda, but i needed passport photos doing and the asda machine wasnt working. staff seemed ok though.
Has your comma and fullstop button ceased to work?
