Um, no.

Plus.net are £14.99 a month (capped) or £29.99 a month (unlimited) for a 1Mb BB connection... I'm just waiting to hear back from Pipex about how much notice I need to give them to leave their service before I go with either Plus or Wanadoo.

£29.99 a month is a bit dearer than the likes of BT, Wanadoo et al but it's still about £17 cheaper than I'm paying Pipex at the moment.

Their webby is www.plus.net and they're Sheffield based.

Pipex is generally a one-month notice period.

As far as cheap broadband goes, people need to make sure they know what they're getting, one company's bb can be very different from another's. There's been some legal debate over what is "broadband", I think the outcome is anything 128K and over. This means that some 128k services are being touted as Broadband, whereas of course the 'standard' service did seem to be 512k. If you're thinking of bb, don't get conned!

Oh and try Zen (http://www.zen.co.uk). Reasonably priced, I've never had any outages with them, contention ratio seems reasonable, static IP(s), and there's no cap.

We are in Sheffield and we use e7even. Very good service and very cheap.

Oh and there's no d/l limit!

Telewest is £35 a month for 1.5Mb unlimited, if you get their phone or TV too, or £37.99 if you just have the broadband.

I've used it for over a year with no problems at all.

Their technical suport is very good too.

Plusnet are very good, not just on price £14.99 for either 512K or 1Mb capped) but their service is second to none - the most important factor. Go have a look.

By "capped" do you mean you can only go online for so long per month ?

No capped means the amount you can download per MB.

Even if you go over the capped limit with plusnet, you just get charged a surcharge for it.

nick2

So you wouldn't be able to leave your computer connected downloading stuff as it would just disconnect after a certain amount has been received ?

How much is the surcharge ?

Skatiechik

No it doesn't disconnect. Broadband is permantly connected, unless you decide to pull out the plug manually.

The point I was getting out with the likes of Freeserve/BT if you reach your capped limit that is it till next month (unless you pay £10-£15 to remove the cap for that particular month)

If you go over your capped limit with Plus net they charge around £2 for each extra gig used. Plusnet also allow you to change your capped limit if you find you are using more than you expected in a particular month.

For more information read their website http://www.plusnet.co.uk

I was asking realy so people can decide if it's better to go for an unlimited package or a capped one with surcharges.

Try V21 (www.v21.co.uk). Saw an ad for them on an adsl site and they're £16.99 a month, uncapped/unmetered. :o

Although you get what you pay for most of the time, so who knows what it's like to be with. Speaking of caps in general, for me personally I'd reach the limit within a week, let alone a month, so I'd steer clear of them if I were you. Worrying about how much you're downloading all the time takes away one of the main advantages of broadband over dialup, where you had to constantly watch the clock so as not to run up a huge phonebill.

Saying you want Broadband is not enough, you have to be specific of what you want: ADSL, cable or satellite...

BT do ADSL with them rubbish USB modems (annoying, needs drivers), Telewest do Cable, with RJ45 modems (VERY good for connection sharing! and no driver installation), dunno if either prodive any other service.

I myself have Telewest Cable and I am very satisfied, no connection interuption, no latency, price is fair and includes TV and phone

I have the complete package from Telewest and it's great, a 3Mb connection is a bit of a luxury but WTH, I download lots of stuff.
I don't know if I would be able to exceed 9Gb a month though, probably.

I use FairAdsl broadband... £19.99 per month unlimitted 512K. I would avoid cable because you can't change company if you don't like the service, or if they put their prices up. With ADSL broadband, you have the option of changing over to a cheaper broadband provider whenever you want to.

I'm another happy Telewest Broadband user - in with phone and TV package costs about £50 per month. Pretty good IMHO seeing as a few years ago we were running up a phone bill of £60 per month on pay as you go 56k dial up!

My download speeds clock in at close to 1MB even though I'm on the 756k service. Nice of them to upgrade everybody from 512k for no extra charge.

Depends what you use your internet for, if you download lots of music and videos etc go for unlimited, if you only post on forums, check your email and the occassional download of stuff then you'll be fine with capped.

I'm considering going with Plusnet's capped service as I'm after a new BB provider and their capped service is like a third of the price of Pipex for twice the speed.

Another happy telewest customer here! A suggestion for people who don't use the phone much would be to get a broadband package from telewest, cancel your BT line and use Gossiptel (or similar) for you phone calls. It is totally free, works just using your internet connection, has reasonable calls to landlines and free calls to all other internet telephone users. For less than a £100 you can also get a phone that you can use without having your PC on just like a normal telephone.

So for £27.99 a month I get 750k broadband, phone line and most of the TV channels of the basic Pay TV services (using Freeview). Seems like a good package to me!!

Yes, always check your bill, they do tend to make mistakes every now and again, but they do sort it out A.S.A.P.
