I went over not too long ago, 3 or 4 weeks or so and my lordy they were hungry! Got swarmed! :o :D So funny though! matsalleh 28-12-2006, 20:47 Ducks, Heron, Canada Geese..... And a grey lag goose, coots, moorhens. KB27 28-12-2006, 21:48 Got to ask, how old is he? As has been pointed out above you really do get swarmed, and my 4 year old son did find it a tad scary. kblade 28-12-2006, 21:53 My childs 8 and found it slightly unnerving so I agree, I would just be wary. :) They hardly come near in the Summer months when fed well but with not as much attention in later months they come right up looking for food (as in proper right up... touching distance!!) and there are a real load of them. Could be worrying for smaller children as the Geese aren't small. kwtcl1 28-12-2006, 22:03 ok i myt not bother then he only 2 kittenta 28-12-2006, 22:10 ok i myt not bother then he only 2 You could always hold him out of harms way. Stand at the opposite end of the pond to where they are and he can watch them swim across. He'll still love it :) kblade 28-12-2006, 22:14 Or just take him to watch them perhaps? Once they realise you have nothing for them they just tend to mill about. BasilRathbon 29-12-2006, 13:13 oooooh they might also see a heron too..... i once knew a dyslexic druggie who injected himself with a heron..... pertfoxylush 29-12-2006, 13:46 Last time I went <about 4 weeks ago> there were LOADS. Mine threw the bread and went and hid behind a tree. :D Rich 29-12-2006, 21:41 Aw bless... Tell you where's good for duck feeding though, low Bradfield, there's a big river in the Village, always swamped with ducks, and they don't take your hand off nearly when you hand feed them either, really tame bunch of birds. Good ice cream van over there if the weather's good for it as well... Perfect afternoon out for the kiddies, we used to go up regular years ago, and went on the stepping stones as well, although obviously stepping stones aren't safe for a 2 year old... Water's a bit deep if they fall in. skipskap 30-12-2006, 10:17 Feeding the ducks is BANNED in Lower Bradfield. There are signs up explaining why. jen13kd 30-12-2006, 10:26 Feeding the ducks is BANNED in Lower Bradfield. There are signs up explaining why. ooohhh why? I've never been there.....? skipskap 30-12-2006, 10:39 The ducks were starting to become reliant on the handouts during the popular summer months. Their natural instincts to hunt for food were diminishing. When it came to the less popular winter months, when the free bread was not so readily available, they suffered and began to starve. Makes sense when you think about it. jen13kd 30-12-2006, 11:04 The ducks were starting to become reliant on the handouts during the popular summer months. Makes sense when you think about it. sounds like this is happening at hillsborough park then - especially when people say they get swarmed in the winter months when they go to feed them. The problem is, white bread is actually not very good for ducks - I live by the river don and I buy duck and geese pellets and scatter them on the river banks over the winter months just to 'help' them a bit. But I wouldn't feed them white bread. - wholemeal (seeded) bread is much better for them. |
