Sheffield Half Marathon - Sunday May 20th 2007, 9:30am Start.

Just sent off my application, £18 for non associate.

Completed last years 1/2 marathon VERY VERY slow and hoping to do better this year, although been ill and then suffered niggling injuries for quite a while.

I'lk be doing it, but I'll sign up the day before like I did last year.

18 quid is a bit steep, but I think it is worth it, one of the best large scale halfs.

Depends how unfit you are how far can you run at the moment? some people do seem to walk most of it the sweep bus goes after 3 hours.

with 4 months of training time to go plenty of time to improve your fitness and it is very rewarding

4 months? It's not enough if your running skills are low.

If you are thinking of running the Sheffield Half Marathon or 3k Fun Run, please consider raising money for Sheffield Wildlife Trust. The charity is one of the official beneficiaries this year, and is appealing for runners to take part.

The Trust is making it easy for you to collect sponsorship money - set up your own web page today here - http://www.justgiving.com/charity/more_events.asp?FundraiserId=182566

You can register for the marathon online now at www.sheffieldmarathon.com

thats why i asked how far she can run and how unfit she was agreed if she can not run a reasonable distance and is not used to excercise it is not long enough.

However if she is used to running and has just let it drop a bit then it may be possible bearing in mind you can walk run it

Either way best to follow a schedule and its probably a good idea to check with your doctor first.

Just my opinion and I am no expert!

I managed last year with about 4 months to fit it all in, but I guess it depends how good your cardiovascular is to begin with, how sensible you are with your training and how committed you are to a regime change, such as being motivated and disciplined enough to dump some of the junk food and beer, and eat more friut and veg and pasta etc.

I've run the last three for a local charity, not great times as I am a 17 stone weightlifter/Powerlifter so anything around two hours is good for me (2.01 is my best time), if I can crack two hours I will be well pleased! If you listen for the "boom boom boom" and feel the ground shaking, that will be me running behind you! Good luck to all.

Advice required regarding running injury.

3 weeks of suffering a pulled hamstring, sore and tender, getting fed-up of the inaction and lack of jogging. Feels like all the passed months are now wasted.

So what's the best treatment or remedy and how can I get things going again. Looks like this year's run will be slower than last years after all - if at all that is :(

With a treadmill you are effectivley running on the spot also you dont go downhill on a treadmill.

I do use them I find them great for interval training as its very easy to control your workout however I think its critical to combine it with running outside I do all my long runs outside did a 14 mile on saturday I did around 141 last year and am looking for 1.30-1.35 this year.

It's now 7 weeks since damaging the hamstring, how depressing it is. All that training down the pan.

Feeling the urge to get out there again, I tried a 10 minute trot last week and it ended up being an embarrasing hobble. Enough to make a grown man cry.

I think I'm still gonna have a go though - even if it means DNF.

This year's half marathon will be the first time I have done any running at all so just hoping to finish! Training is going o.k. although I don't know if I will ever 'enjoy' running!
I'm a bit worried - i find it very hard to get going in the mornings so am feeling trepidation about the Sunday morning start - any advice on morning routines - when and what to eat etc, time to wake up? Transport? We are car-less and coming from Totley - what's the best way?
Thanks in anticipation!

Not sure what's the best way but I always try and fill up with pasta the night before, pop down to Boots for some of their gel food packets to suck on during the race and dextrose tablets before, drink water when you can and try some basic exercise before setting out.

What suits one might not suit another though. I'd be interested to hear other folks ideas too.

I wake up 2 hours before the start and drink some water and have some toast and banana.

I have another banana just before the start and keep drinking water.

I take a sports drink with me a top tip is not to just have water as you will probably find it really hard after an hour or so.

Thanks for all the advice - all I know is I will have to kick the booze for at least a couple of nights before - it really drags my legs down the next day!
At the mo we are planning to get up at 6-ish (used to it for work anyway), have early breakfast (maybe porridge, and banana) then another banana about 1/2 hr before.
TBH energy drinks make me feel vomitous so am planning water and basic glucose sweets and lots of nagging from O/H to make me finish (he could do it on one leg lol). Good luck everyone!

Sorry to hear of your problems I know what its like with injury,Have you tried crosstraining I am also a keen cyclist and find it helps where injurys are concerned.

On Thurs I completed my max distance at 14 miles geez those last 2 miles were tough running through millhouses park.

Gonna focus more on interval training in the next 2 weeks and reduce the millage a bit as I know its getting a bit late but would like to increase my speed a bit.

Built my self up to running 22kms, then injured my calf muscle on the home stretch. Gave it a week to heal then went out and did only 5km before the calf went into spasms (and yes I warmed up well before running). Guess my hopes of completing the sheffield 1/2 in under 2 hrs will have to wait till next year now. I will try on the day, but as soon as it starts to hurt I will quit and stand on the sidelines to clap everyone else.

Every one say ahhh for me , anyway best of luck to all those running, I wish you all success in both beating your best times and for those new to running all the best in completing the run.

Well folks it's almost time. Good luck with the final preparations, just popped out to Boots for mi' carb' gels and carbo' tablets and sports drinks.

Pasta for supper mmmm.

I had n't run properly for almost 11 weeks since damaging my hamstring, but managed a slow 7 miler last Monday and a slow 11 miler last Thursday. Sluggish running and soo sore next day but I guess I'll be there - strapped up and full of Ibuprofen and smelling of muscle rub.

I know I have the stamina to do the course but if there's any doubt's, you'll see me on the sweep-up bus cheering y' all on, coz any unnessessary strain is just not worth it in the long run. hee hee long run, geddit :)

We first saw her run past us on Ecclesall Road and we were stood directly opposite the Singers. THEY WERE BRILLIANT!!! Can anyone tell me who they were because I thought they were FANTASTIC and really added to the atmosphere - well done you three and well done Michelle!

Well the calf muscle went at the two mile marker, so I sat on the side lines and cheered the rest of you on. Well done everyone, you all looked great out there.

Thanks to the first aiders and the police - well done.

I will have to give my calf three months to heal, but.....I will see you all there next year. Once again a HUGE well done to all.

The brochure/guide that comes with the marathon pack when you get your number, chip etc says something like:

Do not attempt a sprint finish as it may cause serious injury.

So why why is there some idiot on the tannoy (yes I know it's a brand name) actively encouraging sprint finishes from athletes who are finishing in 2hrs+

??

If one of them keeled over mid-sprint I don't think he'd be quite as cheery.

Anyway rant over and congratulations to all who ran!

I saw at least two guys collapse near the end as they'd tried to start sprinting as they re-entered the stadium (the lap round the upper level of the stadium) and these were guys who would have come in at under 1.40 if they'd made it to the finish line but they both got carted off in an ambulance....such a shame....

Anyway, my hubby came in at a very respectable 1.47 and it was his first half marathon! I was so proud! :D
Massive congratulations to all those that ran, I was in the stadium cheering you all on from the comfort of my seat!! :hihi:

Well done to everyone who tool part or helped out again in this years 1/2 marathon. I consider it an event of which Sheffield can be justifiably proud.

I managed to finish in 1hr 31m, which I was quite proud of. Although I'm slightly ashamed to say that I was one of the runners who sprint finished!

I was particularly impressed with the level of organisation throughout the entire event and would like to say thank-you to all the stewards and people helping out on the water and sponge stops.

Of course there was very little local media coverage of the actual event which is a bit of a shame. I'm taking part in the Leeds 10k next month. I'm sure the local media will be swarming there. Not that Yorkshire media is Leeds-centric at all though....

The only complaint I have is that all the helpers, who did a great job, also got a t-shirt.There must be more non runners than runners with them.

no helpers no race, some of them were working for 6 hours on the day and many days before.

I agree, but I think a different T-shirt would be more appropriate.Don`t forget a lot of hours were put in by yourself & other runners.
