I grew up in Chesterfield but now only work there and I absolutely hate the place.

What's the general opinion of Chesterfield from a Sheffield point of view?

As an ex-pat Sheffielder I've always had a soft spot for the Spireites. We shouldn't generalise, but I have always rather liked them. They seem a generally friendly, humorous bunch on the whole, and in my experience they tend to get on quite well with Sheffielders. Again, I generalise, but in my experience, their sense of humour is not quite as sardonic as that of we "thee thars" [as I believe they sometimes call us] . Of course, rivalries between a town and a city will always exist, and no doubt mutual antagonism exists in some quarters, but I can think of many, many towns less friendly and far worse in terms of crime, social attitudes etc than Chesterfield. Long may the crooked spire be a landmark!

I used to work in Chesterfield for a number of years and got on well with the people. I went out with a couple of local lasses and found the slightly different accent much nicer than the Sheffield one!

Set in Derbyshire it has a lot of nice places within easy reach as well.

I live half way between Sheffield and Chesterfield and my preference for general everday shopping is Chesterfield. OK, so it's limited on designer type shops but for everthing else it is a much more pleasant shopping experience. Another plus is that parking is a damn sight cheaper than in Sheffield.

IMO the people are more friendly and helpful too.

As a frequent hospital patient, Calow wins hands down every time over Sheffield's hospitals in terms of cleanliness, ease of parking, helpfulness of staff.

Overall Chesterfield gets my vote every time.

Eh? this would be the hospital with the highest mortality rate in the UK would it?

They saved my life so what am I supposed to feel?

Fair enough. They did a lot to help my dad out some years back too but more recently I know of two people that Chesterfield Royal Hospital have completed f***ed over through negligence. One of whom is currently suing them for the loss of a lung - not nice.

Back to Chesterfield though, I’ve lived there a lot and it’s got a lovely town centre that’s well maintained and clean but that – and the fact that beer is really cheap :) – are the only things in it’s favour.

Fearful makes an important point here. Mo, I'm glad they saved your life, but it doesn't change the fact that the hospital has a "bad" record re mortality rates. The Northern General in Sheffield saved my life back in the late 80s [pneumonia], but it doesn't alter the fact that there were a minority of lousy nurses there, and the place wasn't terribly clean either. No offence or disrespect intended here, by the way.

I'm from Chesterfield although have worked in Sheffield for 3 1/2 years and just moved here. I like Chesterfield, I know people slag it off but over the past couple of years, the town centre is much better than it used to be - they have really smartened it up.

Being from Chesterfield I can't resist the odd night out there. It's not too bad but lacks a few good late bars and nightclubs. However, for the size of the town there's definitely something for everyone.

It has more character than Sheffield IMO.

Still love Sheffield for a night out though!

Anyone know which women's high street clothes shops they have? And shoe shops? Don't fancy our town centre or Meadowhell today.

Thanks in advance. x

i love a night out in chesterfield, in fact i prefer a night in in chezzy to sheffield, don't really like all the trendy bars and the 3quid beers sheffield has to offer, i like small intermate chesterfield. However sheffield is a much better place to live for me, but i love having chesterfield on my doorstep.

Better than Rotherham / Barnsley / Doncaster.

Used to like it best when Derbyshire used to play cricket in Queens Park.

Chesterfield - easy parking, inexpensive, shops all close together, better there than shopping in Sheffield.

AND Loncol, Derbyshire are playing at Queens Park again next summer - get yourself back there.

Chesterfield - the only town in Britain where the birds are harder than the blokes!

I like Chezzie - a top night out. In my humble opinion, a better night out than Sheffers - but I guess it all depends on who you're out with.

The bars in Chez are certainly a lot less pretentious than Sheffield's - Sheffield seems to be full of Posh and Becks wannabees these days.

I may be wrong though - just an observation from Johnny.
