tony2311 28-12-2006, 12:19 its a miniture poodle
in one day
it poo 5 times? (poos anywhere he wants)
it wee 6 times? (wees on training paper)
is this normal for it to poo 5 times in 24 hours?
why does it wee on training paper but not poo on it?
what food should i feed it? (using pedigree complete puppy at the mo)
we gave him milk and water (it loves the milk but only little water)
is milk bad for him?
MARY POPPINS 28-12-2006, 12:40 If I were you I would give the breeder, a ring all this advise should have come with the puppy,
for the first few days a least it should have the same food as what it has been used to, and then change it gradually so as not to give an upset tummy,
in answer to your other question puppies will pooh and wee lots in 24 hours and will do it anywhere,
they have to be taught these things, and taken outside as soon as they wake up and when they have been fed.
Its hard work training a puppy.
hi, welcome to the pets section
First, you need to contact the breeder and ask for a care sheet - what he's been fed on etc.
Your pup has no control over his bowel movements at the moment and doesn't have the chance to tell you he needs to go out.
As your pup grows up, he'll get better at knowing when he's about to go but this needs to be teamed with training otherwise he won't know to let you know he needs to go.
Do you have a cage? This will be an enormous help in house training your pup.
So - as soon as you get up, take your pup outside. Go with him and have a little piece of cheese ready.
DON'T stand by the door and let him out into the garden. Always go with him and as soon as he does anything praise him and give him the cheese. Remember, you can't go over the top when praising a puppy - the more fuss the better. Don't worry about feeling silly, it will help in training your pup.
If you are playing with your puppy, watch him carefully. As soon as you've finished, or if it's a long play session, half way through, take him outside. All that excitement will have made him need a wee. Do exactly as above. Praise and give cheese when he goes.
If you are inside and he tries to go, move him outside. Remember if he's already started, moving him will make even more of a mess so take him out as soon as he's finished. Stand outside with him for a while to make sure he doesn't need to do some more and then take him back inside.
Always take him out when he's finished eating - you'll get used to him and you'll know whether to take him straight out, or half an hour after - most puppies need to go half an hour after food. Again, follow the instructions and always praise and reward him for going outside.
Then take him out the very last minute before he goes to bed - this should help him wait until morning, or as long as possible.
If you have a cage, make sure it's big enough at first to have his bed and some newspaper in - then as he grows he'll need a bigger bed and this should coincide with more control so not having the space for newpaper won't matter. Your pup won't want to soil his bed so will try and hold it all night. However be prepared to set your alarm for 3.30am so that you can get up and take him out. He finds it physically impossible right now to hold it and will get very upset if he has to sleep in wee.
The biggest rule is - if he soils in the house, move him outside but don't give him any attention for doing it. Clean it while he's not looking, if he sees you're taking an interest in it, he'll think it's good.
Depending on the dog, you can say 'no' when he goes and move him outside but NEVER, EVER tell him off if you get in and find he's soiled earlier. He'll have forgotten what he's done wrong and will think you coming home is a bad thing.
Personally - I'm surprised he's only weed 6 times:D
I wouldn't feed milk too much - feeding a lot of milk to puppies can cause dairy intolerances as they get older.
Is his poo normal? If so, I wouldn't be too worried but it's worthwhile asking your breeder what the dog was fed on before and then, if you want to change his food, look into which food you'd like to feed.
When you change the food over, make sure you do it gradually. Suddenly changing his food will upset his tummy so make sure you add some of the new food to the old food and then each day put more of the new food in and less of the old food until after about a week, he's being fed on the new choice of food.
Hope this helps
oh also - a lot of people recommend taking a young pup out every hour or so - Takara never needed to go that often, but it may be of use to start off at every hour and see how you go.
Your pup will soon learn that going to the toilet outside means he gets cheese - or whatever treat you choose to feed and going inside doesn't.
tony2311 29-12-2006, 00:00 doing ok on the toilet training thanks for the advice!
how often should i bath the dog? its a miniature poodle, 2 months old,
WallBuilder 29-12-2006, 01:07 I give max a decent bath with dog shampoo once a year, too much bathing especially if you use human shampoo can damage a dogs coat as it looses it's natural oils.
One thing I also discovered is that my dog is intolerant when it comes to dairy products and milk is a definite no no as it makes him go to the loo an awful lot and it's not nice!!! Since I discovered this I've talked with lots of other dog owners and have found out that this is fairly common.
I used to notice my friends toy poodle would stop walking in cold weather as it plainly hated getting it's little paws cold either that or it figured out how to get carried when it went outside in grotty weather.
Don't bath him too often although as a pup Takara had what the vet called 'a greasy teenager phase' - I totally disagree she's never been that greasy - but I was advised to bath her a little more just while she went through this phase.
As Wallbuilder said, bathing them takes the natural oils out of their coat and will damage the quality of his coat.
However, my friend who has a bichon frise crossbreed with a similar coat to a poodle has to bath her more or less every day as she loves to roll and muck doesn't fall out of their coat quite as easily as with a different type of coat.
Even if you don't bath him and don't really need to groom him as they're less prone to moulting, still give him a good brush every day, check his paws and file his nails regularly. This will help get him used to his feet being handled and his nails being filed - filing is far less scary to a pup than clipping nails - it will also increase the bond between the dog and yourself if you take time out to groom him.
Will you be showing him? If so, I'd recommend standing him on something - if you have a grooming table use that - and getting him used to being stacked for shows. The more he does it now, the better he'll be when he gets old enough to be shown.
Good luck.
oh also - with him being so young, don't stick him straight in the bath - everything has to be a positive experience for him. Perhaps try getting a washing up bowl with some lukewarm water in and get a cloth. Just dampen the cloth and run it over the dog. Do this regularly so he gets used to being cleaned and increase the amount of water gradually so that he's used to it. But remember - don't overdo it with actual bathing - it'll damage his coat.
TattyBear 29-12-2006, 10:15 Lotti's advice is really good, I used to let our dog out on the garden every hour without fail and when she did a wee or a poo I used to treat and fuss her like we had won the lottery, people who lived nearby used to think I had lost the plot I think!
After a few weeks (be patient) she used to go to the back door to be let out! Clever girl! : )
Your new baby is on a massive learning curve so be patient!
I had a cage and found my puppy every morning covered in poo! I used to give her a quick wipe wash but as it was mainly on her feet I just used to stick her paws in the sink to rinse them clean. Dont wash with shampoo constantly as it is bad for their fur and skin.
Main advice is be patient and try not to get frustrated, the rewards far outweigh a few weeks/months of little accidents!
