In fact this webuser forum is great for most pc probs,
And no i don't work for them!! used it a few times, always helpful.
Hmmmm, not a bad forum, although mine is better for one reason and one reason alone, mine is hosted within Sheffield and not by some unknown commercial company, I doubt you would get any employer of that forum willing to visit personally to help with problems, lol.
Anyways, that's my two penneth.
Hi, i will have a look at your forum, wasn't aware it existed, just recomended web-user cause i found it useful when i had a prob, plus i downloaded all my security stuff from there,it don't bother me that it's a commercial site,it don't cost me owt.
Will have a look at your forum tho.
threecolours 16-09-2004, 21:23 Hope all that protects from the virus that seems to have just started to go round..getting emails from work that until they've added a patch all emails with HTML format (think thats right) shouldnt be opened...not a techie but something about a virus in graphic images...seems to be causing some concern as we speak and I work for an internet based company...

Erm... I don't know how to put this subtly so I'll just say it bluntly..
I would suggest no-one allow someone who runs a hacking site visit their property to "help with their PC"... It's not exactly the smartest move now is it... :loopy:

Apparently service pack 2 for XP resolves this and not all operating systems or other microsoft programs are affected...
It's not the end of the world but it's certainly something people using the latest MS software should take note of.

You clearly do not have the first clue about what a hacker truly is, you probably are not aware of the fact that there are different forms of hacker, there is the Black Hat Hacker, these are the ones who break into PC's and do all manner of nasty work like stealing files and making people's life a misery, then there is the total opposite, the White Hat Hacker, THIS is what I am, I help people with security problems using the knowledge that I have, so thanks for the suggestion, but it is unfounded in this instance...........The ones most people end up coming up against in the world of the hacker though is the Script Kiddy, this is someone, normally some youngster who in their limited wisdom think it is smart and clever to get something like a Trojan, send it to someone and make their life a misery.
Next time, try looking at the WHOLE of the website before jumping to conclusions, thanks.
Martin_s 17-09-2004, 15:21 I'm not going to get into a debate on semantics with you on this...
Your site offers information that can be used both for your so called "good" purposes or for cracking...
To quote one guide...
Section Two: Subvert Windows nanny programs such as Surfwatch and the setups many schools use in the
hope of keeping kids from using unauthorized programs.
Now as someone who works in schools and knows very well that there is information protected, badly sure, but with the specific intent of stopping kids from accessing information they have no need nor legal right to, is just plain wrong..
.. or how about this
Section Three: Explore other computers
Read: machines that someone else has not given a hacker access to... That's trespass in anyones book... So, you'll excuse me if I don't see the differential here. It's like arguing the difference between an armed bank robber and a thief who only breaks in when the folks aren't home..
So, I'll repeat... I would counsel caution to anyone considering letting someone who runs a forum with this sort of information on to their machine...

Especially from a domain hosted on a dynamic IP!
If you want to test your security, then go to http://www.grc.com/default.htm and run the Shields Up test (all ports)!!

I am sorry but you have totally gotten a hold of the wrong end of the stick, in fact, wrong stick all together.....
Those "guides" are only hosted on my server, and if you had taken the time to read the following disclaimer...
Disclaimer :- These files have not been created by myself, these are files and documents I have managed to find throughout my time on the internet browsing, I hope that they prove as useful to you as they have been to me, but I do not take any responsibility for any acts taken due to the nature of these documents/files, this is only a repository of other people's work, I shall try and place acknowledgement of the creator of any files where possible, if someone sees their work on here and has not been acknowledged for that work, then get in touch and that shall be sorted out.
You would have realised that I am only hosting the files, that is like saying that because someone has a knife in the drawer it makes them a murderer - If someone else decides to use those guides/documents for nefarious purposes, then that is their decision, I on the other hand do NOT do anything along those lines, I merely help with problems, so stop tarring me with the same brush, sheesh.
If people want help from someone who knows what they are on about, then shouldn't that be their decision, besides, the statement about going to someone's location personally was only that, a statement, doesn't mean I am actually gonna do anything of the sort.

You are responsible for the content offered from your server (if you are based in the UK - Go search elReg [TheRegister.co.uk]).
Having a disclaimer makes no difference in UK law.
Having fee paying customers makes companies duty bound to provide the best service possible (which makes security paramount).

I'm sorry officer, I was only providing access to the knife/gun/bomb making instructions... so I can't be held responsible for the people who then use it now can I... Erm no... sorry, that doesn't wash...
Like I said... common sense...

This security risk patch isn't bundled in SP 2.
Well, it certainly wasn't in the one I donwloaded less than 2 weeks ago.
To be safe, do a window update.
Martin_s 18-09-2004, 14:14 OK... I double checked this and here's the relevant technet bulletin with details on what is and isn't affected.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-028.mspx
To clarify... the operating system XP is not affected if you have service pack 2 installed BUT there is a long list of other Microsoft software that can be...
Windows update includes a small test file that looks for any software on your system that might be affected and reports back to you so you're advised to download it and allow it to run as per instructions...
Apologies if I confused anyone with the earlier "short version"... hopefully this sets the record straight.
mr.blaze 20-09-2004, 05:09 I wouldn't say that was a very good security forum sorry.
Security Focus (http://www.security-focus.com/bid) is the daddy.
