Hi does anyone know of a good place in or near Sheffield where you can buy ski gear at decent prices. the last time I went to the ski village it seemed as if £400 or more for a jacket was the going rate. I went to the Decathlon sports superstore expecting to find ski gear but nothing! Is it best to buy in resort? I managed to get a jacket a few years ago for £150 that was half decent. Gone are the days of Rodeo gear at C&A. OK I've blown it! now you know how uncool I am! (Well at least C&A was a step up from jeans and a waterproof - that was in Austria - i didn't freeze!)

Not much choice in Sheff it's self.

Most large outdoor shops sell skiing gear now, like The Outside shop and Nevis Sports, both in Hathersage.

Most mountain jackets are multi purpose these day's, I personally go for Patagonia every time but you do see a lot of North Face, Mountain Hardwear ect... on the slopes.

From expierence the Lake District is full of choices, it sounds far but it could be a day out ( or weekend ).
Their's a wharehouse in Stavely ( the south lakes ) which is exelent. Also sells bikeing gear, with plenty of bargins.

Buying online is also another option, your pretty much guaranteed to get what your after.

Best option is to not go too mad in the Uk because when you get to wherever your skiing they'll be more than enough choices at the right price.
If it's in Europe, Intersport is everywhere and very very good.

Thanks for this modesty - as I figured, not much locally, but I'll definitely take a trip out to Hathersage. Not planning a trip to the lakes anytime soon although I was there this summer (but not thinking about skiing). I was advised ages ago never to buy in resort as you paid way over the odds, but this wasn't my experience last time and I may just wait until I go in Feb. Cheers, Ken

Decathlon will have some in soon, I remember them selling loads of stuff off cheap about April this year.

Well there not gonna keep you dry and warm are they.

Make your choice, go and pay over the odds at some shop in Hathersage or wait until the mainstream stores stock up.

How about online?

Try blacks in town - or there's a ski/snowboarding shop just opposite the safeway on infirmery road. Not sure how cheap they are, but are off the track a bit so....

Check out CCC too, they might have some suitable apparel as well.

lol Mikey and thanks for the caution about the shop in Hathersage - I won't build my hopes up. Blacks and CCC? I was in both not so long ago (not looking for ski gear) powers of observation must have been especially low ... I'll check 'em out ... not sure about online - i like to feel and try before i buy - (is this just me? is this me turning into a grumpy old man???) - i'll definitely take a look at the shop on infirmary road though, tas - not so far off the track in a car (especially as i live in S5 - should I admit this?)
