View Full Version : Sunday 31st Dec - Final Walk of the Year Anyone?

If anyone fancies one last walk to see out the year on Sunday 31st December 2006, then let me know. I ought to walk off a bit of that Christmas excess :o

Obviously, it'll be nothing too strenuous, possible routes are either the 5 Weirs (nicely central), or maybe up to Dam Flask/Bradfield. If you fancy anywhere else, feel free to make suggestions!

It'll be a morning/lunchtime walk, so there'll be plenty of time for you to get back for those New Year celebrations.

I might be up for it, but i won't be certain until later in the week. :)

Awww Feargal, you should have said earlier before I got on the plane, cos I might not have left if I`d `ve known what you were planning! And if you believe that, you`ll believe owt!
Anyway, just to let you Walking friends know, I got here eventually, in the early hours of this morning after a 22 hour day with unbelievable security hold-ups and red tape issues. Can`t believe the stuff they took off me at Gatwick....essential items I brought for the folks here that you can`t in the USA like jars of curry and asda choccie spread lol. Spoilsports!
Oh and just to rub in the fact that I`m slumming it over here, its an absolutely gorgeous morning in Kentucky. Its 8.30, the suns shining over the fields, and its @ 3c with a slight overnight frost. I`m sat typing this looking out of the dining room window at a horse thats apparently waiting for me to ride it (aagh) and then in a short while I`m going to be doing some work on the farm. (Unpaid labouring) There`s miles of potential walking country to check out, beer in the fridge, and my good lady at my side. Tough life uh?
Enjoy your walk, and your New Years celebs. See y`all mid Jan!

Sorry to but in, but just wondered if the walkers group has an 'official' leader yet? The designation has been removed from the top of the front page, and I haven't heard anything yet. Just curious :) .

Nope. Not heard a squeak!

Our thread titles go unedited and our plans are awash with loose cannons. It's chaos, I tell you, chaos! :hihi:

Has some manner of plan been formulated for this?

Do we have a meeting time/place?

Is it still happening?!?!

feargal
30-12-2006, 12:09
It is indeed happening BlankFrack!

Meet at 11.30 am at Lady's Bridge (across from the Tap & Barrel pub), Sunday 31st December.

Meaks' suggestion of the 5 Weirs Walk, and canal stroll back sounds very nice indeed. For anyone wanting to do a shorter walk, you can join us for the 5 Weirs part, then hop on a bus or tram at Meadowhall back into town. Whichever option, we'll be home in time for those New Year celebrations to start. :D

See you all there - we might even be getting a visit from the Taxman!

Meet at 11.30 am in the Tap & Barrel pub, Sunday 31st December.

See you there! ;)

It should be nice and easy going, the canal is a little muddy in parts so don't be wearing your party frocks.

ooooooooooo Meaks pointed me to this thread from another.

Count me in, I only live down the road and never been the whole distance on the 5 Wiers.

Is there many pubs along the way ? :)

The Five Weirs Walk is an 8km path from Sheffield City Centre to Meadowhall along the banks of the River Don. It connects to the Sheffield and Tinsley canal towpath, the Upper Don Walk, the riverside path to Rotherham and the Trans Pennine Trail.

Kitty123, non of the walk along the river or the canal is far away from public transport, be it bus or tram back to town so if you tire you have no problem getting back.
Thats before the public transport ceases for New Year by the way.

I should definitely be there tomorrow. It'll be nice seeing new faces, or even previous acquaintences in a walking group context. I'll even bring along an extra special map which should prove very interesting.

Well arrived back, safe and sound.

Must say the walk was .............. interesting.

We encountered : swamps, hurricane weather, shark infested waters, dodgy pubs :o , and finally ........ bridges.

But must say enjoyed it, and nice to meet new faces and the old ones again, and time I had a nap and got ready for tonight............. I am knackered. :gag:

Yay! That was aceness!!

The dodgy pub was a real treat (especially since they thoughtfully provided a pole for Meaks to writhe on for our delectation and delight)

Big hugs to Feargal for making it happen and big hugs to everyone else who was there just cos I'm feeling quite huggy after a couple of beers.

Hope you get your shoes back to full gleaming whiteness again Kristian!

What was the roll call; who turned up? I was busy walking dogs for Sheffield Retired Greyhound Fund, or I would have put in an appearance. I aim to organise a mid-week walk round Damflask reservoir before the end of Jan. Will post details in due course.

The roll call was myself, Feargal, Andrea, Kristian, Meaks, Taxman, Spiderpete, Blank Frack, Me-&-Pippo, and...er...Pippo. It was great to see new walking faces, and another pooch to add to our hall of fame. It should be impossible to get lost on a route like the 5 weirs, but we gave it a damn good try. :hihi:

The length surprised many in the group, and we were all thoroughly exhausted by the end. I think it's winter, and energy levels are at their lowest ebb. I had terrible pains in my leg which is daft because I'm usually fit and active but I turned into an old lady today. We didn't even go up any hills!

First refreshment stop was the grimly shabby 'Friendship' pub; the friendship on the sign being between a blonde girl and a licky black dog. Our room was apparently dedicated to interior design trends of the 1970s, and dominated by a pole-dancing pole, right by our table, which was smeared with greasy fingerprints and Idon'tevenwanttothinkaboutwhatelse. £1.25 a pint in a filthy glass. I'm cheap but today I discovered I have standards after all!

With the undergrowth died off and the trees bare, we had a lovely view of the river. The Don is always bigger and more stately than I remember it. We didn't get as far as the sewage farm, alas, but we did see the boat that Joe Scarborough lives on. No idea which one it was, but that's a mere detail. There were odd (very odd) sculptures dotted about, some very attractive walkways and even a section designed for wheelchair canoeing.

It was a damn shame that the weather was so grizzly along the canal. The locks were overflowing and the canal millimetres from bursting its banks. There was much mud and puddle action, to the horror of some (what is it about gay men and white shoes? It's almost become a walking group initiation rite!)

Second drink stop, just as twilight closed in, was the Tap and Barrel. We managed to forget the drizzle and had new year hugs all round.

Here's the photos, minus the origami lesson... (http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l115/purdyamos/Five%20Weirs%20and%20Canal/?action=view&current=DSCN0866.jpg)

Love the pictures Purdy - what happened to the one of me attempting to navigate the mud? :D

Was further and muddier than expected but I thoroughly enjoyed it, the weather wasn't too bad and my portable gin bar kept me going. Will definitely be paying another visit to the Friendship. :)

Totally knackered me out for the NYE celebrations, had to go to bed when I got in! :partyhat:

Happy New Year to everyone

And you too! My legs hurt (in my wayward youth, that used to mean something altogether different. Now it means I've strolled along a historic trail in the drizzle. Ho hum! :hihi: )
