View Full Version : My Pond Is Leaking! Fish are snuffing it!

Went out to torment the fish yesterday and the pond is half full! Three fish were dead in spite of the fact theres still lots of water in there but it seems to be steadiny emptying.
The pump was working nicely but no water was coming from the pipe of the filter, so i assume that the filter was blocked and the water was going to the flower beds or something. I cleaned the filter and... im not sure if its still emptying but water is running back into the pond.

Any ideas how to search for a hole in the lining?

That sounds like a nightmare scenario Jabber- I would imagine that the only way you could check for damage is to empty the pond and check visually, but that's not always going to be foolproof either, since the hole doesn't have to be obvious to allow for a slow leak.

Think you may have to empty the pond first...is a big pond.?

remember to use the pond water to save the fish in though..dont put them straight in to a buckett with water from the tap.!

I'm sure the only way is to drain the pond completely, clean off the gunk and do a very close examination of it. Do you have one of those pre-formed plastic pond liners or a flexible liner? If the latter, then it should be quite easy to repair (once you've found the hole) with another piece of liner and some of the fixative sold for the purpose in garden centres. If you have one of the pre-formed liners, then a crack might be a bit more difficult to fix. I'd ask at the garden centre.

Gawd! To hell with that then! I was hopnig to give the fish a few plasters and let them fix it. Ill give it a few days and if the level drops too much ill assume that the liner is holed and if thats the case ill give the fish to my neighbours and fill in the hole, I have a plan for that part of the garden anyway, a nice fruit tree.

Thanks for the advice everybody!

Jabberwocky, as you have a pump and filter i presume you have an external header tank (filter).
Have you checked the water hoses, input and output and the connections to the tank for leaks and made sure the tank isn't leaking? If any are that will drain water from the system.

We had so much rain last night that the pond is full to overflowing again. I switched off the filter and im going to be watching the water level very closely over the next few days.
