did anyone see the amazing cloud inversion in derwent valley last tuesday? it was about midday, just as you round the corner at surprise view. (a cloud inversion, btw, is when a cloud is sitting on the ground below you. i didn't know what it was called until someone told me!)

i've posted a pic of this one on my white rose blog, but would love to hear if other people saw this; it was one of the most stunning ones i've ever seen in derbyshire :)

We saw one at this time last year whilst standing on Burbage, not far from the Surprise. It looked really surealistic and eerie and with the sun behind us it cast our silouettes onto the inversion. Amazing.

That'll have been your shadows - the term for this is brocken spectre - see http://atoptics.co.uk/droplets/globrock.htm and http://www.weather-photography.com/album.php?cat=optics&subcat=brocken

Technically it's cloud inversion when this occurs, whether you're above it, in it, or nowhere near it.

When you're in it, it's fog :hihi:

It's not been as spectacular as it was last week for a while.

Xmas eve was a good day for it too.

Aye It's a cigarette smoke accumulation from the Little John tap room - it's not been as bad as this since Clive and Brian were behind the bar!!!!

thats great rinty! can i be a total trainspotter and ask what post processing you've done on that as its interesting :)

i tweaked the cloud colour on mine a little to give the slightly yellow halo, and used shadows highlights as the foreground was in complete darkness. i used this tut to help me with the shadows/highlights as i'd never used that before:

dreamy landscape photoshop tutorial (http://www.dphclub.com/tutorials/landscape-glow.htm)

- i get most of my tuts from good tutorials dot com (http://www.good-tutorials.com/new/1/0/)

i will ask yog sothoth, he's a boffin, hold on :)

- shouts at yog, "bry! percy on sheff forum wants to know why cloud inversions happen!"

yog says:

"it's because in really still cold conditions, a layer of cold air is trapped in the valley. due to the stillness there's no wind to combine this air with the warmer air above, and the moisture in the air either condenses into fog or if it's cold it settles out on the ground as frost, which is why you often get frost down in the valleys and not up on the hills. can you put the kettle on, luv?"

(i think the last bit was addressed to me, not you percy!)
