Can anyone recall living in the Garden Village area at Stocksbridge and going on the annual trips.

I seem to remember there were two in the main.

One where loads of coaches used to take us to Blackpool for the lights and then there was the Christmas trip when we all used to go to Barnsley to see the annual panto in the theatre on Eldon Street in Barnsley town centre.

Any body out there in forum land remember those trips. ??

I seem to remember the Blackpool one when I was very young. We lived on Spink Hall Lane but my Aunt used to live on Woolley Rd & we also used to go to Sunday school at the Mission. I am probably thinking about 5o years ago ( Oh my God).

That would be about right Janet.

The mission as I recall was on the end of Moorland Drive just before the Inman Pavilion which was at the top off Woolley Road and just before you could go out onto the football pitches at Oxley Park at the end.

The big council bonfire used to be held also on the fields at the back of the mission building to the side of where the Sports Hall extension is now.

Do you remember the baths being built.??

We used to go up and climb all over the site when it was being built.

My god daughter is currently in Oz as she has just gone out on a 1yr work permit but she is enjoying it that much already she is now looking at trying to extend it to a 2 yr one.

Yes Tazman I do remember the pavillion & have spent many happy times there at birthday party's & various other happenings that were held there & I dont think I ever missed a bonfire there in all the years we lived in Stocksbridge, it used to be a great event bonfire toffee spuds done in there jackets etc: happy memories they were.I also spent many hours up & down the hill behind my aunts house on Woolley Rd. I was also thrown from a go cart (trolley as they were called back then) when my brother & I came down the hill from the "Tip" & the trolley tipped us off, we were on our way to my aunts. I still have the grit in my knee as a memory. Garden Village or Garden City was a good place in my mind & has provided some happy childhood memories.

I remember the trips the community assocciation used to run there was a Spring bank holiday trip to the seaside and a christmas trip to a local pantomine.

All this was subsidised by the collection of doorstep subs collected weekly throughout the year by members of the committee.

They also held a few other events throughout the year I remember the summer gala with big swingboats and cocunut shy etc

Those were the days when community spirit meant everything and people would give up lots of their time for the benefit of the whole community.

My mum and dad were committee members for a while.

I remember my childhood in Garden Village with great fondness
