I really think its a sorry state of affairs when the fact that im in my 20's and I am in a shop automatically means im going to steal something. Every time I go in a shop I can see the security guard clock me. And the he is conveniently wherever I am in the shop till I leave. I am a decent citizen who has never stole a thing in my life. Im sure they are just doing there job but surely any woman/man/kid of any age is just as likely to steal as I am.

Are you sure you're not being just the tiniest bit paranoid?

Got to be more to it than that as the 20-30 age bracket are the high spenders and shops need you.

Are you a scruffy git who has hidden pockets that could fit lots of goodies in?

Your general appearance must surely have something to do with it if it happens in lots of shops.
If it's just one ask them why.

I get that too, especially when i'm with my o/h.
Wilkinsons is the worst for it, and TJ Hughes, so we just take the mick and lead them on a merry dance round the store!

Glad someone else finds it. I was starting to get offended. Bet your not scruffy looking either just an average 20something male. It really winds me up.

i used to get followed around shops when i was heavily pregnant. looking at the photos now it DID look like a fake bump, but it was blinkin' annoying at the time.

My mate who is black, was followed around Atkinsons by a security guard yesterday, he gathered a few items & expected to pay for all the items at one paypoint, the assistant said he could only pay for the things he'd bought from her stall (where they sell nuts & things), anyway, she decided to take liberties with her gob, knowing the security guy was near.
My mate waited while she'd spewed out her verbles then went straight to see the management with the guard still following him.
My mate explained what had happened & the manager went straight to the assistant & sacked her on the spot.
The manager said that was the last straw as the assistant had been rude to others too.

Good result.

Is it the stripy jumper, mask and bag marked 'swag' that give you away?

Generally, I always wear shoes, and nobody follows me round.

Today however, I wore some slip on trainers, presentable top and smart jeans, and I got followed in debenhams, woolies and currys.
It must be the trainers!!!

I used to do it on purpose in Coles a few years ago.

I was in there genuinely shopping one Saturday (quite scruffily dressed as is my norm) & noticed the same person near me wherever I went, whichever floor.

Hmmmm :suspect: plain clothes store detective eh? :heyhey:

So I continued to browse from one floor to the next, well I had time to kill didn't I? :hihi:
I bet they were knackered by time I got bored.

So I eventually went to pay for my roll of wrapping paper & whipped out my store card!

RESULT

Even the woman who was serving me looked at me like she was chewing a wasp & was forced to call me Sir

This became a regular Saturday passtime for a while

This has happened to me as well, in HMV ont bottom of Fargate. I decided to give the security guard a taste of his own medicine and follow HIM around the shop for 15 minutes. It amused me no end, but then i am quite simple.....

He's probably not.
I remember this in my twenties, I used to write millions of letters of complaint poiting out that I was a professional woman and didn't appreciate being followed around the shop like an adolecsent wagging maths.

One of the worst occasions was when a security guard stood outside the changing rooms of Dorothy Perkins and sent the assistant in to tell me to leave the curtain of my cubicle open so they could seee what I was doing.

Mind you, it can happen to folks of any age.

I once saw an Ophthalmic Consultant get his bags searched in a store in Worksop.

He went barmy!

Unfortunately what Liam says is true. My son is 19 and gets followed around shops and watched constantly. He looks like any other young man to me but maybe the security guards see summat I dont! Ive been in shops with him when hes been followed, then when they see hes with me they leave him alone. How do they know is not me thats the shoplifter?!
