View Full Version : Warnock, the time is near.
Beastieboy 15-09-2004, 09:45 After the first few games of the season Neil Warnock asked United fans not to judge the team and it's propects until ten games into the season. We are now at eight games in 10th position after two defeats with some tricky games coming up.
What are you thoughts as we approach the ten game mark?
Well like I said in another post,Warnock made a mistake in selling Page & Hayles without having other players to come in for them.Warnock is looking at a young kid from Chester a center half, but we need some experience in defence & a 25 30 goal a season striker ,admitting that a striker who can score that is like finding rocking horse S**T ,but something has to be done & sooner rather than later.UP THE BLADES
RunningFree 15-09-2004, 12:59 I do security at the unitewd matches and I don't think they are doing too bad this season (so far). They were the better team against West Ham but was a little unlucky about the freekick at the end.
All i think they need to do is to take more chances have a few shots. They don't seem to ever shoot. they want to be on the goal like before they have a shot! I think Warnock just needs to sort them out up front and tell em to shoot more.
i have been watching and it is the same pattern up front every game. A long pass up the wing and try to get it in the box. Any team that studies them will suss them out.
Robbie Loving 15-09-2004, 16:48 when i first read subject box, i was thinking
"not the idiots trying to get warnock out again"
well its not as bad on inside against him as i thought it would be
anyone who wants warnock out has to be stupid, who exawctly are we going to replace him with,
granted his tactical awareness at times is abysmal, but we are being very unlucky this season, the football has been great at times, but i do think wright needs to be dropped, as does ward
lets bring in luke rogers of shrewsbury for up front,
harley at left back
tonge back on left and quinn in middle
SENSE
I certainly don't want Warnock out,I think he is a decent manager in the Bassett mould ,sometimes he is a bit tactically a bit one dimentional ,with the like's of a big striker being his only option Pescy was a decent player, but not an ideal target man,we need someone like Forster at Reading he is a good striker.Kabba will be like having a new striker when he is fitI think we will still do well this season.6 weeks into the season is a bit early to start panicking.UP THE BLADES
I don't want him to leave either and i too was doing security at the match on Saturday and I'd say the ref and linesman were defo hammers !!
Some of the decisions we're totally wrong !
Don't think i'll ever do security at SUFC again though as we are meant to be the one's being calm and not watching the game something i found very hard, really had to bite my tonge (get it HUH ?!) SORRY !
COME ON YOU BLADES !!!!!

I do not want Warnock to leave the club but I thought that title may get some attention:D I agree with you saying Alan Wright should be dropped, Ward too.
Harley is doing well in midfield but he won us over with his performances at left back when on loan (hard to do as it is not the most glorious of positions).
In the near future I see Kevin Blackwell coming back to manage the Blades.
we've lost two games against teams who are on premiership parachute money... whose wage bills are probably around 10 times that of ours (literally... ours is around £3mill theirs probably around £30mill)
before that, we'd won four in a row... it's not perfect, but get a grip people... blades fans are so fickle!
As Robbie wisely says, who are we going to replace him with? Perhaps his tactics and strategies could be a little more imaginative, and yes he made a mistake with Page and Hayles, but he has done wonders when you consider the relatively minute budget he has at his disposal. In comparison to his counterparts in the Premier, Warnock's budget is chickenfeed. It is, to make an analogy, like you or I going out expecting a good night on the town with three quid in our pockets...
The biggest change i have noticed, is when Blackwell left. We lost a 'Gudden' there!.
As for Neil, who else is there that can better the blades squad at the moment?. My personal answer is no-one!.
In the future i think either Ronnie Moor or Keith Curle could do a job for us!
Beastieboy 18-09-2004, 16:38 My oh my, what happend today at Wigan? I got home, put Sky sports on and couldn't belive it. Did anyone go or listen to the game, what went on there?
Hi B I listened on radio sheffield & for half an hour we kept them at bay the jags made an horrendous mistake & 6 minutes later it was 3 - 0 in the last minute jags again was left for dead by Roberts & 4-0.The commentator said Warnock should get some players on loan as Lester & Ward are injured again. To be honest we don't need loan players we need long term players.Ward was pathetic again ,all the clubs he has played for & how many goals has he scored he is just a target man.Lester not bad when fit which isn't too often, the new kid on loan from Palace Black had a reasonable second half as did Forte, but Utd man of the match was Quinn by a mile,Premiere Clubs will be looking at him in Jan 2005,he is quality.I do not know whats happened to Jags but since Tonge's been injured he looks a poor player. The Utd board need to give Warnock some money now or we will slip further down .Utd being beaten by Wigan C,mon they have been backed by good signings & Utd mediocre replacements.Ellington & Roberts are great sighnings for Wigan, but we should have had these players. There were 10,682 attendance at Wigan .We are supposed to be one of the Top Yorkshire teams. So all I can say is I hope we beat Wrexham but you never know they have a good Cup Record. 3-1 to the Blades.
I was reading the Daily Mirror & it showed how many clubs Ward has played for Norwich,Derby,Barnsley,Blackburn,Bradford & Utd.How many goals has this guy scored in total for all the teams he has played for,I would be grateful if anyone could tell me I am curious as we never seem to get a decent striker these days ,just has beens.I hope that Warnock can sort out a striker as Leeds have gone and got Ormorod from Southampton,Warnock tried to get him on loan & Leeds nipped in again, for a team who are supposed to be some £70m in debt they paid £1m for Gregan depending on appearences etc,but our board will not give Warnock any money,we have £70,000 from the sale of Hayles well that will have other teams shaking in there boots, thinking we can buy there player.Blackburn paid £1.1m for Stead a 3rd division player so what are we gonna get for £70 grand.Look at Bolton old Sam has got in some great Bosman signings, why can't the Utd board back Warnock,no transfer fee.UP THE BLADES
Tosh, you've hit the nail squarely on the head. It is the old problem of lack of funds. We WILL slip down further and further, I agree, unless poor Warnock's budget is increased. I wouldn't bet on it though, even after the humiliating defeat by Wigan. When will that board wake up?
Beastieboy 19-09-2004, 13:16 Ward has scored 138 goals in 14 years (9.85 ave per season), that's both league and cup. He has had £8.5m spent on him in transfer fees.
That sounds to me like an old third division strikers stats (the goals that is) rather than a supposedly top strikers. I see we missed out on Brett Ormerod from Southampton very nice business by the blades. Still, i'll be there to cheer them on regardless.
C'mon you Blades!!!
Cheers for finding out the stats for Ward Beastie, like I said I have never rated Ward,Leeds have gassumped us once again,Warnock asked the Southampton Manager about Ormorod but he told him Leeds had been in touch with the player,Warnock said he will not get in touch with the clubs in future & just go straight to the player, which is supposed to be illegal all loan deals are supposed to go through the right channels at the club in question. But Leeds have always done things like that ,but I thought there would have been some loyalty from a former Blade but I guess there isn't anything like that in footy any more, but I think Warnock should go for Freedman at Palace he is a decent striker. We all live in hope of the Premiership.UP THE BLADES

They never will mate it has always been the same, what's the point in having someone on loan for 5 minutes then the player has gone,we need proper signings so if anyone from the UTD Board are reading this GIVE WARNOCK SOME MONEY or we will be joining the Owls in Div 1.Up The Blades
Robbie Loving 19-09-2004, 15:26 i see all this negative feedback regarding wigan etc
where is the problem??
we played wigan leicester and west ham,
all 3 are tipped for promotion, yes ideally we wanna be getting something from these games, it is just a M INOR set back, so let's not worry people and keep our support coming for the blades
we have a good side, we really do,
as for our injuries, it may be a blessing in disguise having ward and leicester injured, the board MAY bring in a quality forward now,
people who go on about losing ormerod to leeds? OH NO, we have missed out on a striker that has only ever proven himself in division 2, stats we really need hey??
players we should have been going for.......
danny webber at watford (who is onn loan to them)
Luke Rogers (never proved himself in a high league, but well worth the risk
Matt Jansen (this player was available till sparky took over)
David Connolly (yes i know he commanded a fee)
Neil Mellor (if crewe have there eyes on him, why not us)
all these are worth thinking about, i dont think our defence needs that much changing, regardless that we have conceded 9 in 3 games now,
look at the previous 6 games were we had conced 2,
united fans are quick to jump on the boards back etc when we are not winning, but not qquick enough to praise when they release come funds (ie pre season when we took a risk in bringing in 7 players before anyone left)
we need to drop wright, i think warnock is disullusioned saying "he is one of the best in this league" who is he trying to kid LOL
a small note on black........ why bring him in? yes i know liddell is injured, but i think there are better players available out there that are better than him!!!
ALL IN ALL, its only a small blip, united will sonn be back up there in the next few games, and to that i have no doubt
UP THE BLADES
Beastieboy 19-09-2004, 16:01 I would rather have this 'blip' now then at the end of the season like last year. If injuries can be sorted before or by christmas then we will be o.k. I reckon.
Robbie I agree with some of your comments, but the board has always been rubbish as long as I have been a fan some 42 yrs, sell our best players mainly to Leeds ,Mick Jones ,Tony Currie,Brian Deane who we sold to Benfica for £1m & they sold him on for £3m,we have always been a selling club the minute we get a half decent player off he goes.Look at Dane Whitehouse what a hardworking player he was he would have died for his club & Leeds came in & he said no chance I,m a UTD player & of course he got injured & that put an end to a promising career. There was talk of Jags & Tonge going but they dropped off form & no club has said anything since, all supporters have a right to show disatisfaction if the team fall away, what is the point in winning 4 then lose 3,have a good defensive record of 2 against & 3 matches later 11,as far as I can see there is a serious problem with our defence,Wright is a decent player but put him up against anyone over 5' 5" & he is in trouble.Ward is garbage,Lester always injured.Gray our best goalscorer left on the bench does that make tactical sense, even the commentators on radio Sheffield were gobsmacked & they also said Forte is worth a start from the beggining not in the 2nd half or 15 mins from time,ok he's a young kid & so is Rooney ,Pugh of Leeds & he is scoring regular. So give some credit to the supporters who are understandably worried, look what the Owls did yesterday & they are in approx the same position in there league.UP THE BLADES
royjames 19-09-2004, 20:32 Warnock has to go he has lost the plot, some of his tactics are a joke and the board need to realise that you have to speculate to accumilate in other words spend some money for once.
Oh and Mark b I also used to work at the lane in the search team with tony on the corner of the kop and south, had some good times their .
Anyway up the blades.

A.B.Yaffle 20-09-2004, 12:54 According to the Star, Ward and Lester are both expected to be out for at least 4 weeks and Warnock has recalled Shaw from Rotherham. As Ward hasn't been playing well, I can't help thinking this might benefit the club.
Well P I never understood Warnock letting Shaw go to Rotherham in the first place,he looked lively in the games I saw on tv.Ward will not be missed I think Warnock should try & sell him on ,but what club would buy him if he can't score in the Championship ,maybe in the Conference.UP THE BLADES

rickmiles85 20-09-2004, 21:14 I went to the wigan match on saturday. All I can say is we were dreadful! Before the first goal went in we had more possesion than wigan and it was a very scrappy match. First goal went in and wigan took the commanding lead. Took the initiative. As people say. your team is only as good as your strikers and as Im sure many of my fellow blades fans will agree, sheff utd have never been very good in the striker dept in recent years. Wigan arnt actually that good a side, its really their strikers which keep their head about water, the rest of the team is merely average. Nothing special. As for Ward and Lester, they looked like blocks of lard running after the ball. But I cant blame the front two for the defeat of saturday, it was a whole team under performance. I was embarrased to sit there at times. As im sure most of you know i live in wigan, (:( ) so I was hoping we'd at least win!
Someone further up the post mentioned about Webber @ Watford. He's this divisions top scorer with 9 and if he's on loan then I suggest Warnock gets his ass moving because he would be a very very welcomed addition.
Regard warnock leaving, nah I dont think that should happen. We shouldnt follow the example of the other sheffield team, but that is another kettle of fish. Warnock should remain in charge for as long as he deems right, if he wants to leave and retire then thats his choice but as long as he is managing we should back him. After all who else have we had who could match warnock for character and most of all loyalty and commitment?! What we must not forget is that he has sheffield uniteds interests at heart and the 3million capped wage bill shows that. We should give him a good pat on the back really because other managers would have gone passed that milestone years ago.
Its a shame that we never have much money to spend in the transfer market but I feel its just a matter of time. At the moment its all for the best because we are getting things in place to maintain the clubs future. If and when the casion comes into use we will have a mantained income of (est 8million) and we'll look back on the days when we spent money with care and think, "thank god we didnt do that" because who knows, we could be in Sheff Wednesdays position? If the casino money never comes then its not all end all, at least we arnt millions in dept

Tosh, i know you was only messing, but id love keegan down at the lane to be honest!!
he is a good manager, but he would never join united as he relys on money too much to get himself out of trouble!!!
another player i think we should have pushed for was David Bentley, after all he was linked with us before being loaned to norwich!!!
Yes Robbie. Bentley is a good player, also Webber who is at Watford he has scored 9 goals this season, but Cardiff are after him.Warnock should ask the board for some money to buy him,but thats maybe asking to much mate.Well we can live in hope.UP THE BLADES
my gripe with Warnock is mainly about the way he treats the youth palyers. We have one of the best youth teams in the country but we never give them a proper chance.
1 Ian Ross. We miss someone with a bit of grit and guille in the midfield.
2: Jonathan Forte: we need Width. He is a talent. Play him before he leaves.
There is a lot of rotten things going on down at the lane. Its seems the club is run for the benefit of Warnock. I agree with limited resources he's done a fantastic job. However I'd rather have someone like Paul Sturrock, Micky Adams in charge who may try to take the club forwards instead of thedwonward spiral we appear to be on at the moment.

I totally agree Robbie, the youth players should get a chance, look at Man Utd all the young players Fergy introduced,Liverpool,Crewe. If they are good enough they should play regardless them being teenagers, look at Rooney.Warnock has said some fringe players may play tonight at Wrexham,Forte is a cert to start.
Already, after the awful Wigan defeat, I hear Unitedites who should know better, writing off our chances. There are 30 odd matches to be played yet! I agree with Beastie, better a blip now than a blip at the end. Yes, Robbie is right too, Warnock's tactics re youth players takes some fathoming at times. Okay, the board are half asleep with the keys to the safe hidden from Warnock. I still think we have a good, and under-rated side that could [with a bit of luck thrown in] do the business for us. Let's keep a cool head collectively, fellow Bladesmen...
A.B.Yaffle 21-09-2004, 14:40 There are some fans who will always panic and want to sack Warnock everytime we lose a few games. Maybe those fans would be better off following the Owls instead if they like to see a new manager every year!
I still don't see why another manager (who probably wouldn't have the Blades' best interests at heart as much as Warnock does) would be able to improve things if the Board do not provide fresh money for new players.
I agree he should be introducing the young players more, but he is right to be careful to introduce them gradually. Hopefully the fact that Ward and Lester are injured will force him to give the young ones a bit more chance to prove themselves.

also resting thirlwell, although he has been brought on at half time

or the fact, he is deemed good enough to play
Edit: 2-2 Jags
3-2 to the blades listened on radio Sheffield 400 fans went down to wrexham very good for a tuesday match. The defending was suspect again ,Morgan scored there first,Gray equalised & bang on haltime a corner to the Blades & Morgan hit the bar ,Wrexham got the ball played it up front & no Utd defenders to stop the guy.The after halftime Jags got the equalised that shoould do his confidence a bit of good & Gray got the winner.Shaw came on for last few minutes,Black played well & Quinn was our best player again.Well I hope we can beat Coventry on Sat,providing the defence is ok 2-1 to the Blades.UP THE BLADES

kabba is starting to remind me of whitehouse though
forte cant seem to manage 90 mins.
and warnock likes to play our leading scorer either on bench or on right wing
Regarding Warnock, I am quoting John Phelan from the latest [October] issue of Flashing Blade fanzine,"If you know a manager who could build a team with quality players such as Harley, Tongue, Jagielka and Lester that regularly pushes for promotion on a budget that wouldn't keep David Beckham in sarongs for a weekend, then pass his name on to Derek Dooley. Otherwise, stop moaning, give Warnock the credit he's due and get behind the team". Phelan also quotes a Daily Mail report which observed, after the Leeds match, that Warnock's side actually cost less than the £200,000 Blackwell spent on defender Stephen Crainey. We cannot compete with West Ham, Wolves, Leicester [ and even hated Leeds] financially, but as Phelan adds, " Neil has got us competing on the pitch and that is where it counts". Wise words, eh lads?

Robbie Loving 24-09-2004, 17:26 nobody is saying that he is not very shrewd in the transfer market
he is inept tactics wise, and team selection
i personally think he is the best man for the job though
United have some cracking players & I guess the newer ones will take time to settle & once we get Lester & Kabba back we should be ok.
Shaw in Forte out:mad:
and yes we have no money (several millions appear to have disappeared into thin air (or fat director)) but we have a decent squad.

royjames 26-09-2004, 19:37 Warnock will NOT get us promoted,we are a quarter way through the season and we are below half way.
Yes we have had injuries but so has everyone else,I accept that it is not all his fault after all the directors are the ones who set the wage cap and this is another reason we can't attract the quality players needed to win promotion.
Has anyone also thought that with his constant attacking of the refs that they have it in their mind to give us as little as possible because of warnock bad mouthing them all the time.
This is one aspect that really gives our club a bad name ,his constant moaning all the time maybe if he kept his mouth shut we might get a better rtesponce form the oficials.

Can't agree with that - out of all the injuries, only Liddell and maybe Francis would be guaranteed a place if we had our strongest team out. Kabba has been injured for over a year - surely enough time to find a decent replacement?
Lester seems to be a bit part player, and is not prolific (discounting penalties).
Kozluk has a battle to play for us again, as we have Bromby, Jags & Francis for the right, and Wright and Harley for the left.
Armstrong - one for the future, looked promising, but again, a bit part player.
Ward - VERY lucky to be playing at this level IMO - 30 goals in 6 years says it all.

bromby would not even be in side if kozluk was playing, granted kozzy will find it hard to get back in now after bromby has played so well
id certainly rather have lester or ward/lester/kabba up front than shaw
we could have armstrong at left back and have options for harley/tonge on left!! so i would class em as 1st teamers
Beastieboy 27-09-2004, 17:16 As the first post said that Warnock wanted blades fans to judge the team agter 10 games. I bet he wasn't expecting this to be the situation, and with a tough game against Sunderland tomorrow what does the future hold?
Let's hope we can get a big crowd tomorrow night to cheer the blades on.
Yeah B I hope things will get better, after seeing the highlights of Leeds & Sunderland both sides were pathetic,if we play Sunderland like we played Leeds 2-0 we should beat them. But if our defence plays like it has done for the last 5 or so matches we will get slaughtered.I cannot understand why the defence has gone bad all of a sudden, but I think with Tongue back Jags will play better, the team is much better with them both in the side. The crowd was just over 16.000 on saturday but Coventry have never really had a big following & I cannot imagine many of there supporters travelling to the lane but it was a poor attendance.Anyway I'm gonna be positive & say 2-1 to UTD.UP THE BLADES.

it was a poor turn out from blades, and it just shows how naive some of our "supporters" are
but the board got it wrong, it should never have been a category A game
ive never really understood these categorys for games when we had them wimbledon or man city where a category b common sense would say wimbledon be a cat c and man city be a category a:gag:

Beastieboy 29-09-2004, 16:21 Only 17,000+ last night, where are the fans? Sunderland brought quite a few fans and it's a long journey. I hope most the fans are not just turning to glory seekers and only turn up if we are in the top three.
Good win but who are we going to have up front now Gray will be suspended:confused:
Warnock & McCarthy are going to appeal ,but they have no film evidence,so Warnock said it could be tricky.
Beastieboy 29-09-2004, 20:54 It was actually the linesman that saw the incident not the ref so his side will have to be put in. But there may be a chance as both managers are appealing and not just one.
Should the appeal fail Warnock may have to look at Billy Sharp and Forte as well as Shaw.
mr.warnock....
hello? playing a dwarf sized left back with the heading capabilities of Charles I is such a good idea. Why have an academy? Its not like any of the players will ever get a chance. If we haven't got a better youth centre back than him then we may as well scrap it now........
Well another 2 points dropped,I listened to the match on radio Sheffield & although UTD had all the pressure & played better in the 2nd half, once again Wright was to blame again, how can Warnock play a guy who is 5' 5" as a central defender is beyond me,Cadamarteri had a decent debut should have wrapped the game up in the last few minutes, but Shaw did it again.Warnock signs a big Italian defender & does not play him & plays the mighty midget??.anyway we have a break now & lets see if we can carry on climbing up the table.UP THE BLADES
