View Full Version : Just another Saturday
A friend visited Sheffield last saturday. Whilst eating in Pizza Hut at the bottom of High Street he saw a guy speak to the staff in an obnoxious, threatening way. This behaviour steadily grew worse until eventually the police were called and took him out of the place...
Later he walked toward the railway station when he saw an Asian man in traditional dress. A group of men drew level with the man, 'Look at him!' yelled one, 'what a ******* ****'. Another screamed into his face '**** ***' two women in this group laughed hysterically at this...
Just another saturday in Sheffield...
Well, you will eat in Pizza Hut.

I think you'll find its just another Saturday in most other cities around the country.
I think that is sickening and sad,I love this City and cant believe all the s~~t things that go on lately, murders, drugs, I suppose its as in all Cities bad as that is.

Just another Saturday in our 'great' world...
Sadly, it can be just as bad in small towns as well. Southport in Lancs is regarded as a predominantly middle class town, a "genteel resort" [according to one guide], but people there consider it safer to go to Liverpool for a night on the town. When it gets to that stage, I wonder why Blair is concentrating on banning hunting with dogs when his priority should be a "zero tolerance" approach to anti-social behaviour in our towns and cities. Sheffield city centre CAN be an unpleasant place at night, but not as bad as nearby Nottingham. In my experience, Nottingham city centre on a weekend evening is potentially one of the most dangerous places in England. If you don't believe me, ask the police.
But who decides what is acceptable behaviour ?
And what happens to the people who are arrested ?
I would think it fairly easy to achieve consensus on what is "acceptable" behaviour. Violence or the threat of violence against the person, racially-motivated insults, etc. The categories are all there, Nick, we just need enough police officers on the streets and the right policies in place. What happens to those arrested? Stiffer sentences. I admit that prison may not "work" in the sense of changing people for the better, but it works in the sense of keeping vicious louts away from the rest of us.

Try living in Sunderland for a year, or Nottingham, or one of any number of cities. Sheffield is still far friendlier than a lot of places!

So far every uni that I've looked at states that their respective cities/towns are one of the safest cities in the UK!
No unsafe cities then :loopy:

Excellent!
Tgigreeny is certainly right re Nottingham. In my experience, Nottingham city centre on a weekend night is one of the most dangerous places in the country. The level of violence is appalling.
Ian Mitchell makes a very good point too. The way Universities advertise their respective cities these days, one could be tempted to think that we are living in the country depicted in the film "Brief Encounter". Salford Uni, in particular, is situated near a very nasty highrise area. When I visited recently, I was solemnly warned not to go wandering around the area on my own.
jessycar 19-09-2004, 22:21 My friend went to Salford uni & was mugged about two weeks after being there. He soon moved home & started at Hallam.
I hate being out on my own at night. It seems to be getting bad all over the city now :( The same friend (he doesn't have much luck bless him) was mugged outside the local pub a few weeks ago.

Don't believe anything in a uni prospectus tells you!
Sheffield doesn't scare me at all and I think it's better than it was 20 years ago. Not got a lot of experience of other UK cities' nightlife but I hear reports that Leeds and Birmingham are particularly scary
Jessycar, sorry about your poor friend. I turned down a job teaching at Salford a couple of years ago. I didn't like the vibes at all, and I really didn't fancy walking to the train station at night. There are too many gangs of Paul Calf types for my liking...
goldenfleece 20-09-2004, 17:22 Nottingham has a bad reputation but I went there recently on a Saturday night and it was fine. Better than Sheffield I would have said for groups of drunken morons looking for fights? It has been portrayed really badly on TV recently in these crime documentary type series they seem to enjoy making....we saw a few cretins about but it was nothing like the hell on earth portrayed on TV.

Where did you go?
Goldenfleece, glad you emerged safe and sound! I, for one, would miss your postings!
