For all those who have read the book, or who remember the TV programme from the 70s (or maybe it was the early 80s), Radio 7 are broadcasting an excellent dramatisation of it.

The first part (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain/sunday/) was last Sunday. Part 2 is next week.

Brilliant - I didn't know about that. I read the book every year, and bully my kids into watching the old TV version (first broadcast in 1984).

I could have sworn it was earlier than 84; funny how your memory plays tricks on you.

The Radio 7 version is very atmospheric, and each of the two parts is an hour and a half long. I think it was originally broadcast on Radio 4 some time ago (I recognise the announcer's voice), though if so, I managed to miss it first time around.

I can remember hearing it on the wireless as a child.
It brings back cosy, warm winter memories.

It was first recorded in the '50s for Childrens Hour but it must have been repeated 'cos I'm not that old.
