Ok, hot debate time, what and where is the best chippy in Sheffield, chips have to be cooked in dripping or lard and they have to sell big white bread cakes covered in flour.

I think the best is Johns in Stocksbridge.

Tip for all you Sheffield travellers- Don't ask for a fishcake in Chesterfield and expect a Sheffield fishcake (fish sandwiched between two slices of potatoe, then batered) as you'll get a Ross type thing (mashed tater, parsley with a fishy taste) But if you ask for a fish fritter you'll get the real Sheffield thing. In Nottingham you'll get Rossy thing whatever you ask for!
Couldn't take the pace so came back here to find local chippy shut and real shortage of fishcakes with no delivery facility!

Fishcakes ain't like our Fishcakes anywhere else, anyone know otherwise ?
Mind you some of the fish(or lack of) in our fishcakes, leaves a lot to be desired !

The best Chippy? The Baracuda on City Road. No question. My tubby gut is at least 50% the fault of their chips and battered sausage!!

Mmmmmm......chips and sausage. Dammit, why are there no Fish and Chip shops in Calgary??? :x

Best by far (the acid test is after you've eaten them - did they live up to your taste expectations?) are at the Chip Shop bang opposite the PunchBowl pub at Crookes. Cheap, massive white fish and tasty well cooked chips. Good batter and he never disappoints.

I haven't found one decent chippie since moving to sheffield.

They either have the more batter than fish - or they wouldn't know a decent portion of chips if it slapped them about the face with a wet kipper.

My fav' chippy of all time is a small chippy in Wosborough Common, Barnsley. Their chips were great and in large quantities and their fish was sold in brick like sizes.

Never got any kind of stomach upset from them either - which is more than can be said for some chippies round ere.

I Agree RPG!

There is only one good place in England for chips and thats cornwall. Newquay, Padstow, Wadebridge all have good chippies. By far one of the best I've been to is Harry Ramsdens and Barnicutts.

Ther best one in Sheffield is probably Harthill chippy. Its gorgeous, its not in Sheffield but on the outskirts. Try it.

We here at Sheffield Community Information have, over the past year, been on a search for the best Sheffield Chippy. Travelling across the city on recommendations from friends, family and work colleagues has been an interesting journey! One thing that became clear to us is, people all too often accept poor food/music/art/whatever as our society becomes more dumbed-down by the minute :-) People would rather eat Mcdonalds than a proper cheeseburger! Anyhoo, I was on a personal mission to find a chippy that could match the 'Becketts' of old (people living in S2 will remember), or even the 'Baracuda' of old (on city road, when it was run by a greek woman called mary). All to no avail. Until...

Manor Park fisheries were quite nice and alwasy seemed busy, Darnall were excellent one week, poor the next. But the winner, by a long mile, has to be Richmond Fisheries on Richmond Road. Not only is the fish whiter than white, but the chips actually HAVE SOME TASTE!!!!!

Thing is with chippys, they all have their off days. But if you go to richmond on a good day, you're in for a real treat.

So, whats the best Burger King in Sheffield :-)

Here in Sheff, I quite the one opposite the Owen building of Hallam university. Can't remember what it's called.

That Chippie used to be called Geoffs who is the same person who owns the Abbey Friars on Abbeydale Road. I think he sold that one on Herries road. The Norwood chippie is ok sometimes but I have been past sometimes and there is an awful smell that put me off even buying any.

The best chippie of all I have tried are Bolehill on Crookes which was always excellent, proper white fish and good sized portions. Next best would be becketts on manor top doesn't seem to have changed much (their chips always stick together) for some reason.

Overall best would have to be bolehill at the bottom of bolehill road crookes.

Don't live in that neck of the woods now but would travel just for chippie.

Also excellent chinese on school road, crookes (new hing wah) travel every saturday (when not going out) for takeway from meadowhall end of town, Well worth the 30 minute journey

That's my mum and dad's favourite place too. Dad has promised us his "bohemian supper" when we visit in October. I can't wait!!!
It consists of fish, chips, mushy peas, white sliced bread and butter, and a cheap bottle of white plonk from Aldi. Wow what a meal! Plus the candle on the table-we'll be really pushing the boat out that night. (LOL, yeh right dad)
Dad has been going to crookes chippy for years and he knows the people who work in there. they always say "Usual Brian?" Like he's ordering a pint at his local. She puts a special piece in just for him. Hmmm????

For City Centre chippies, now harlequin has closed down it probably has to be Tony's chippy by Ponds Forge. For late night snacks the Devonshire Chippy isn't too bad.

I miss my trips to the village of Wainfleet, home of Batemans Brewery, near Skegness, where Sutton's fish and chip shop is. They have a coal fired fish friar, and their chips are fried in dripping. Can't beat it!

It's on Gleadless Road on the Newfield Green Shops. Not Gleadless Townend.

Get to the top of Blackstock Road and you'll see the shops opposite. Opposite the blackstock pub.

And if anyone is interested, I had a bag o chips from Manor Top Chippie and they don't come close to Newfield Green Chippy chips. So there you have it, Newfield Green Chippy is THE best!

follow up:
People have there own individual tastes so i do not think a 'best' chip shop can be pinned down.
They are in decline also.
As for tastes, some people at school were in to the Sheffield football clubs while some liked clubs from far off lands like Tottenham?
For others it was the ZX Spectrum whilst for others it was the Vic 20 or Texus Instruments, so how can tastes be pinned down?

That'll be the Norwood Fish Bar, my local so I must agree with you, ask for a haddock if you are hungry, we share 1 between three of us(and I am 15 stone). Used to go to the Fish'n'scales at lane top but they went downhill after they refurbed the shop, must be the new fryer?

fuzzy
22-09-2003, 10:32 PM
Now comin from Grimsby this is interesting, as in Sheffield the prefered fish is cod, but over there it is haddock. A fishcake that you get here is called a fish pattie over there, but you can also get luncheon meat fritters like you used to get at school dinners.
Crookes chippies the admiral is good but they do large chips, bolehill are lovely chips when they change to new potatoes very sweet, "nice big fiiish" as he says but the mushy peas are tastless, you have to add lots of salt to them.
Have to admit i usually use the Broomhill friery, lovely fish good chips and they do loads of other stuff (cajun chicken, lasagne, home made pies, fish pie, kebabs and more) and at a very reasonable price.
Though have to say the best fish and chips i've ever had was at the pub in Applecross in Scotland. I have never tasted fish like that, absolutly fantastic. Think Nommedenet will definately agree on this too.

Brenda's chippy, down the moor, back of Woolworths. Best fish for miles!

Longcol
24-09-2003, 12:58 AM
Round this neck of the woods the two best are;

Batter Sea Cods Home - Howard Road, Walkley - fish always fresh and generous portions - plus a kids menu. Well worth a detour of several miles, especially round tea time.

Also, down at the bottom of Netherthorpe - can't remember it's new name - but an excellent chippie and one of the few that does scallops (a slice of potato in batter). Best at dinner time.

Good to see that Sheffield still has plenty of good chippies.

All time best ones for me (when I was a lad in the late 60's early 70's).

Ma Ibberson's at the bottom of Carr Road, Deepcar.

The Harlequin on Howard Street.

Walkers opposite the Broadfield on Abbeydale Road.

Bit old this thread now but hey ho...

Best chippy in sheffield has to be the original, and Ainsley Harriot's favourite chippy, the Broomhill Friery. Despite the fact that there are now FOUR fast food places within about a 25 yard area of broomhill, that is the one that always has the queues. Really cheap too!

When visit Sheffield now occasionally take a walk up Grange Lane from Shiregreen upto Thorpe Hesley and go to the chippy on the junction - can't remember it's name and I know it's not in Sheffield as such but after a walk up the hill they taste great and lovely views down towards Ecclesfield and Shiregreen (and the M1!)

i've done alot of fish & chip tasting and there are a variety of shops that i now go to.

in atterclife i love the robin hoods bay taste of the sea side, there chips are lovely and crispy and the mushy peas are beaut.

when i'm in the city i go the one on ponds street across from the bus station, mmm lovely chips and i love their fish cakes.

where i live in high green, the circle chippy is the best but it never seams to be open, or i can never catch it open also greengate lane chippy does superb fish & fish cakes oh and the best garlic mayo i've ever tasted.

but the best chippy i have ever been to isnt in sheffield, its in doncaster across from the college, i cant remember the name but the chips are the best, i get a small which cost 50p and i can never finish them. they server a large variety of food like southern fired potatoe wedges, gorgeous onion rings and i love there yorkshire fishcakes (a sheffield fishcake to you and me)

I couldn't agree more about the manor fish bar. Absolutely terrible they are, yet there is always a queue! If I didn't think I'd get chased down the road for bad naming them, I would tell everyone in that queue to go to Alberts for a better deal!!!

Alberts is next to KFC on City Road. The man who owns it used to own the Intakeaway and has always been reasonable on price aswell as generous with portions.

Does anyone know whats happened to "scraps" that you used to be able to get from the chip shop? I can't get none for love nor money and I used to love em with my curry sauce!!

Alberts on City Rd is good. The one he owned previously (Intakeaway) has now gone down hill since it changed hands. The last two times Ive eaten their chips Ive had to spit them out and chuck them away.
My favourite is Tonys in Mosborough. Town End chippy (Gleadless) is good also.
Most chippys nowadays tend to sell kebabs etc and their chips are never as good as a proper chippy.

Is still Richmond Fisheries without a doubt and I know, cos I've been all over SHeffield in a quest to find the best one. Anyone who remembers Becketts on Manor Top when it WAS BECKETTS and not just Manor Top Fish Bar will know what I mean if I say that the chips are as good from Richmond and the fish is even better.

Some of the suggestions on here I just can't understand. I mean, I live on Townend and Gleadless Townend chippy is just DIRE. Tastless and expensive, you folk really need Richmond Fisheries in your life :-)

Becketts was fantastic...so much better than school dinners. Mr Becketts daughter Isobel was in my year at school. The chippy on the bottom of manor lane used to be good as well (city road end, near the church) but it changed hands recently and I havent been there since, so dont know if its still as good.

"Aparantly the chip shop on London Road does good chips, but it never seems to be open."

haha yeh, every time i walked past when i didnt want food, it was open, and then when i purposefully went, it was shut! I lived on abbeydale road last year, and didnt get food from there a single time, cos it was never open!

broomhill friery - have been there once and thought it was very good. have also been to the one opposite hallam once, again, very good.
i'm sort of new to fish and chips, never used to eat them reguarly until moving up to sheffield. best fish and chips i have had have to be from withernsea in humberside where my parents in law live. oh and toffs in muswell hill, london, before it changed hands - was excellent.

are there any good ones on or near ecclesall road/banner cross?

sheffieldfox

ecclesall road has a chippy on the corner of eccy road/rustlings road junction. Its not bad, as a student i'd say a decent percentage of my meals have been from there.

I've been looking for another one though just as something to compare it with around the hunters bar area. Anyone know anything?

my personal opinion is that the old chippy that was on alexander road in swallownest was the best. Chips werent too thick, they were just greasy enough (!) and were a treat with gravy!!! Also, once when i was feeling adventurous, they battered and fried a mars bar, and a banana!!!

Now, ive grown up.

When I'm in Sheffield I go to the one in Beighton, the Admiral I think it's called. Very, very nice indeed. I have memories of Sullivan's chippy on Fife street, Wincobank in the 60s and 70s, which were the best I've ever tasted.

*drool* The Tasty Plaice in Bude, Cornwall, best F&C ever, no skin, white fish, golden chips and pineapple fritters! Following that I can agree with Admirals, then there's a really bizarre place in the middle of a housing estate in Boythorpe which is quite divine, Shoreham Street is pretty good, I prefer Chinese tho!
Under which circusmtances I recommend The Red Lion on London Road which has the best Chinese takeway and quite pasable chips too.

we had a chippy meal in tony's in city centre last week inside the cafe, now usually its ok there.
But we went in at gone 2pm he cooked us a fish etc and it was the worst thing ive ever tasted ,it was like rubber.
you could tell it was cooked twice over, and the chips were just scraps.
i wanted to complain but my son wouldn't let me.so we wont be going there again.

the chippy's at stocksbridge -produce is very greasy and they dont shake the chips - they just go straight on to the paper.
everyone was glad when ours shut down and was replaced by chinese.

has anyone tried robin hoods bay chippy at attercliffe yet.
it was in the star .
chips ok in hillsborough middlewood rd,
also chippy down side road from asda at chapeltown -very good.
if anyone visits holmfirth, that chippy is very good.

yes i remember queenies being the best around at shiregreen
years ago.
atlantis use to be good till it changed hands.
is that one still there on howard st in town -it had a cafe too.

the best fish and chips ive tasted for years were at rhyll.
an asian couple run the shop and they can certainly teach the traditional english chippies a thing or too about how to cook fish and chips ill tell you.

Disco cat, I'm not sure whether it is the same Sullivan family. The chip shop on Fife Street didn't actually say "Sullivans" on the door, just "Fish and Chips", but that was the name of the family. The shop was always packed, and they did the old Yorkshire Beef dripping variety of fish and chips, with amazing scraps. Excuse me, while I weep for the memory of their sublime fishcakes.

Don't confuse with Phoenix. opposite Big Tree, they sell chips you could only eat when you're drunk. And I sometimes do when I'm drunk, and I can't get rid of the taste in the morning.

We all have our fave local chippies, but the city centre is the space we all share. In town I like:

-the Devonshire [the only one in town that's open at night?].

-the Pond Street one [not the greasy spoon caff, it's a few doors down from there]. Very good - and little bottles of pop in weird colours for about 20p. A classic proper chippy.

-the one near the back of the Co-op/Argos/Boardwalk/Cannon is good. Horrible area but nice chippy surprisingly.

Any other central ones we've not mentioned on here? I'd hate to miss a good one.

-The one near the Moor/near Furnival Gate looks like a good 'un but I've not been in there yet. Closes at funny times I think.

..well being a connoiseur of the humble fish supper (having worked in the once wonderful Broomhill Friary!), I have to say that the chippie in Crosspool is superb..went last night and couldn't believe that the chips stood up in the paper..like cartoon chips, they were so well fried!! They also do a thing called a cheese, onion and potato fritter in batter..stuff like tht always sounds better than it is..but this exceeded expectations!!

PS..I'm not a shareholder in this business btw lol!

I had some from the new Chinese opposite Farmfoods and they seemed to put more onion in my chicken & cashew than anything else. Looked to me like they'd tried to pad it out with the cheap stuff and skimp on the good stuff. Haven't been back since. Maybe I just went on a bad day though.

tried Two Steps on Sharrowvale road when we moved in, wasnt impressed.

Best fish and chips ive had ever are at Inghams in Filey, or Skyliner in Leeds, ive not found anywhere which can replicate those!

The one on Attercliffe, is nice, near the Alloys place. Not amazing though.

G/F did retry two steps last week and said they were better.

Got high hopes for a new one called Paris Fish Bar opening near Low Life Records.. Fingers X'd

now whilst this post doesnt really contribute, i'd also like to know of nice chippys in sheffield particularly near eccy road.

Yes the chippy at townend is very good, I can't remember the name either (even though I went yesterday:huh:) their lunchtime special is paricularly good value.

The Manor Top one is good also and must get the award for the longest opening hours in Sheffield, it's even open on Sundays I think.

marishells to i agree on in eccelsfield

also when i lived in shirecliffe best one was shirecliffe chippy on longly ave west.,but funny opening hours tho but great chips always full shop.

if you want to feed a army on one bag of chips.then chip and scales on lane top can do that.

I was the served the worst fish ever this week - on my way home down m74....batter was rock hard and when I snapped it in half fish was barely there, just a solid shrivelled lump. :gag:

Can't believe they served it. Got my money back and went hungry until i got home!

Another vote for The Woodseats Fisheries and also Manor Top chippy :)

Avoid Derbyshire Lane chippy (the one near Mundella school). I used to live across the road but would still prefer to go elsewhere. Strangely, people seem to like them. Should Newfield school clamp down on kids coming out at dinner though, that chippy would go out of business!

How anyone - other than the owner - can recommend Abbey Friary is beyond me.

I've stopped going there.

Two Steps is hit and miss. Pies okay.

Give Banner Cross Fisheries a try. They don't disappoint.

But if you're near an Admiral shop, that's the place.

BEST CHIP SHOP IS PHEONIX FISHBAR OPPOSITE THE BIG TREE. THIS SHOP IS THE BEST IN SHEFFIELD. IT'S FISH AND CHIPS ARE AMAZING. IT ALSO DOES QUALITY KEBABS TOO. THERE IS ANOTHER CHIP SHOP FURTHER UP CALLED 'WOODSEAT FISHERIES' WHICH IS SHOCKING. ALL THE FOOD IS BLACK. I HAVE BEEN IN A FEW TIMES AND THE NEXT DAY I WAS DYING. I THINK ITS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE CHIPS OR THE DOGGY LOOKING FISH. THE WHOLE SHOP SMELLS HORRIBLE TOO. GO TO PHEONIX FISHBAR ITS THE BEST

Don't confuse with Phoenix. opposite Big Tree, they sell chips you could only eat when you're drunk. And I sometimes do when I'm drunk, and I can't get rid of the taste in the morning.

I decided to give woodseats fisheries a second chance after previous bad experiences. The pheonix fishbar was closed and i was hungry so i had no option. The food was horrible. All i could taste was the greecy dripping. Next time i would rather starve. I would also like to add that 'muddycoffee' talks rubbish. He would not know decent fish and chips if it jumped up and bit his on the nose. "which it probably would if bought from woodseats fisheries" Phoenix is the best.

After growing up in the trade I am very particular. The best one I've found so far is TWO STEPS on Sharrow lanejust up from porter cottage. Chips are great. Gravy however needs improvement. The hardest thing to get right though is mushy peas - bu I would give theirs 7.5/8 out of ten.

I had a fish the other day which could've done with a bit longer in the frier - didn't seem like the fat was hot enough but this is an isolated case.

Friendly, traditional and take proper pride in what they do. And they can fry too!

I hate you all - there are no chippies in Texas :(

I can't wait for Christmas - I'll be home for decent curries and fish and chips.

My favorite chip shops in Sheffield were the one at Manor Top and the Harlequin opposite SHU. The best I had in a long time were from the Magpie cafe in Whitby. I also had a damn fine curry there at a tiny place in the railway station.

Oh god I need this food.

Again - I hate you all. :P

I shall just have to satisfy myself for the moment with the best damn burgers and BBQ ever.

Chippie, bottom of Greystones Rd, corner of first road on the left, leaving Ecclesall Rd.

The fish & chips I can highly recommend. TIP: If you're buying for two, only order 1 lot of chips, the portions are huge, as are the fish!

Can't speak for the rest of the menu, though if there's such a thing as a 'bad' battered sausage, I bought one from there the other week, the taste was enough to put me off that particular delicacy for life!

No argument with their basic fish & chips though --- Delicious!

P.S. Useful thread AndyB, so far I've tried a couple of local 'possibles' mentioned on here, I still return to the one I've recommended above though!

I've had a lot of fish n chips in my time being from a seaside resort and I've been mighty impressed with the Broomhill Friary. It's cheap, really tasty and theyre good portions! Cant ask for much more.

I'm not too sure about the Devonshire Chippy though, living right by there Iv been a few times but tbh I think I prefer Popeyes round the corner. The chips are ok and get a good portion but im not too keen on everythin else, and I'm yet to see a smile in there!

The biggest worry I find with Sheffield chippies, apart from the weird fishcakes that I need to try, is why are there no meat and potato pies?? I cant find them anywhere!

I had some chips from the devonshire chippy today and they were alright although the lady serving did pour on curry sauce not gravy which i wanted and when i complained she said she'd give me extra gravy on top! She said that normally she only gives one little ladle of gravy and because she messed up i was lucky and got 2 ladles full!

Wow im a lucky girl!

Was also a bit intrigued by the barm cakes being kept in a bin liner???
