Two steps is the best, really nice and light batter!!
Not tried Green Steps yet, but apprently its made with more environmental friendly ways......
Cost the same thou.
Just moved to Walkley, anyone know any nice ones around there?
If not will just drive back to sharowvale road

devonshire chippy

Used to love this place but it's really gone downhill and so has the Broomhill Friary( Now under new management). Can't be bothered to read through 500 posts but poseiden in Woodseats gets my vote.

I've been told that the Walnut club do fantastic fish, chips and mushy peas for £4.95, eat in or TA.

The one under new management, in woodhouse village. I had had chips from there the other day and they were all gritty :gag:

Taplin Chippy in Hillsborough. they are verry nice there

Not since they got taken over about a month ago. The chips are manky and horrible now. I had to argue with the assistant that a fishcake buttie should not be costing me £3 too which gave me the hump as well!

Ok, hot debate time, what and where is the best chippy in Sheffield, chips have to be cooked in dripping or lard and they have to sell big white bread cakes covered in flour.

I think the best is Johns in Stocksbridge.I know where the worst ones are...................Loch Fyne on Glossop Road! whilst the price £10 is not extortionate in a supposed upmarket restuarant,on a recent lunchtime visit 5 of us all came to the same conclusion..........lukewarm greasy rubbish!...........had to search for the fish amongst a heap of sad batter! never again.

heres an interesting shout. i was amazed by the standards at the harry ramsdens takeaway in meadowhall food court. i know what you are thinking, that it must be rubbish, not a proper fish shop etc, but the fish was massive and lovely and the chips were perfect. i was more surprised than anyone! pricy, about £6 i think though, but better than KFC/mcdonalds etc.

oh and for the record, my favourite is broomheads in crookes :D

Brenda's on Earl Way in the town centre is my number one choice. Lovely, and I'm from West Yorkshire, where standards are high. ;)
Woodseats Fisheries at Woodseats is my second choice.
Poseidon at Meadowhead (Abbey lane) is good too but not as good as Woodseats.

because most families don't have the facility to replicate the type of chips that can be produced in a chip shop. whereas the beans are identical/worse.

I used to go to Two Step in Ecclesall Road and Devonshire but they are both too far away now. I am going to risk it at the moment and go for Tony's. I have massive cravings for Fish and Chips right now. I just would like some advice for next time.

When I lived on Eccy road I used to switch between Jimmy's Plaice just by endcliffe park and two steps.

Now I'm in Bradway and after trying a few, must say Woodseats is by far the best. Chips always beautifully cooked and portions are massive. One chips between three of us normally.

Near Commonside, or "in the (Spring) Vale" - just had my first plateful from "New Cod on the Block" and belive me, it was a plateful!
The fish was like a whale, the batter scrumptious. My daughter's recommendation - the owner used to have a good reputation when at his former Broomhill shop.

That's if you have time to spare. They never have any readies,
each fish is put in as it is ordered and if you go 20 minutes before
closing time they've got nothing and refuse to put anymore in.
What a lot they could sell in 20 minutes or as they see it
all this waste to shut shop on.
That's why we don't go anymore.

I have to disagree. Been twice (2 years ago and then gave them a second chance last year) and both times the fish was tasteless. And both times I've heard other people either in the restaurant or walking around saying the same.
Very disappointing.

As for someone asking for a decent chippy around Meersbrook...no idea. And I really fancied some on the way home from work last night, so I wouldn't mind knowing if there is one too.

I don't think you can deep fry mackerel. It's a very oily fish and battering and deep frying wouldn't suit it. I've never seen it on offer in any chip shop, anywhere, even Cornwall, where mackerel is very popular. Is there still a fishmonger on Crookes shops? Your best bet is to buy some fresh.Just take its head off and shallow fry it in olive oil and butter until the skin is crispy. Delicious! Or wrap it in foil and bake it in the oven.

How can anybody actually answer this question unless they're tried every fish and chip shop in Sheffield and even then it's down to the individuals own preference?

I quite like the fish and chip shop at Greengate Lane in High Green. The Devonshire Chippy in town is a shocker, but we still go there after a few beers because of the convenience.

There are no good takeaway fish and chip shops in Sheffield.
Every single one does the batter too thick and claggy and the chips all soggy.
Plus the oil they all seem to use tastes really artificial and leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

They get the tastebuds going but ultimately are disappointing.

Maybe people like it that way but for me the batter has to be light and crispy all the way through and the chips soft in the middle but crispy on the outside and crunchy at the ends.

If you want decent fish and chips you either have to go to a decent restaurant and pay the price or , only eat them on a trip to the seaside .

For some reason , in Scarborough or Whitby , they seem capable of making takeaway F&C with a really light and crisp batter. Quite why Sheffield shops cannot equal this I do not know.

My vote goes to New Cod on the Block on Commonside S6. I can't think how it could be improved. Lovely food, staff, premises. It's a pleasure to go there. I'm just glad I don't live too near or I'd be in there 3 or 4 times a week.

Chips should be brown, not white.

Batter should be golden and crispy, not pale yellow, thin, smooth and flaccid.

Fish should be snow white with large firm flakes.

I only mention this because it is difficult to find a chip shop that consistently does all these 3 things.

I'd agree with Tony's at Mosborough as being one of the best - because they do manage to do all 3.

Bolehill chippy, Crookes
Poseidon, Woodseats
Rose Chippy, Hillsborough (by far better than the much more popular Rawsons:-Fish twice as big just a slightly long wait)

Poseidon woodseats/abbey lane are really good :)

Broomheads at Crookes definitely. Beat all the other chippies in Crookes. It's the furthest one away from us so we have to drive to it so the chips don't get soggy.

Admiral Chippy at Mosborough

You go to Admiral with the best chippy in Sheffield (Tony's) round the corner?

Strange!

I would second that, my mum used to like going there and she said it was 'very clean' (we used to liken her to Hyacinth Bucket at times) (Boookay) Their fishcakes are the best I have ever tasted in my life.

skinner knows his fish & chips. I'd say Tony's is the best I've had since Harlequin shut down years ago. And the Magpie cafe in Whitby is legendary.

Thing is, fish & chips aint what it used to be. Most places turn out pale coloured chips, almost white and fish with very light yellow thin chewy batter on them.

The best chip shops still use beef dripping - but there aren't many of those left nowadays - I think it's politically incorrect or something.
