Hi,
first time buyers looking to move to sheffield, don't know the area very well so a list of areas to avoid when house hunting would be great, plus any recommended areas for affordable houses for first time buyers in nice areas would also be gratefully received!

The Manor and Parson Cross are two areas of Sheffield I would avoid.

Dore and Totley are considered to be the best areas - it's where all the rich people live :)

we don't have children, would like country so outskirts of sheffield would be good, as we are willing to travel to get into work in the city centre. no flats or appartments! a bit of a garden would be nice.

also - something else to throw into the discussion, what are the good/bad points about sheffield?

If you are looking for the edge of the city I can recommend Hillsborough, smore specifically Rivelin Valley, it's beautiful and so close to the tram for easy commuting into town.

As for areas to avoid, I would steer clear of Parsons Cross, Fur Vale and Pitsmoore if possible.

Sheffield is a vibrant city with fantastic shopping, plenty of night life and only a stones throw away from the countryside and other major cities like Manchester and Leeds.

Down points? I don't think there really are any to shout about, every city has similar low points such as crime and litter.

OK, I'm doing just that, but do consider Woodseats (S8). On the edge of town, but only 3 miles from the centre and 2/3 bed Victorian terraces with a bit of garden can still be had for under £130k. Meersbrook just down the road is great too.

I meant to say Woodseats is in S8 - don't know how that rogue smiley with shades on got in there!

If you are willing to commute a bit I recomend just outside of sheff. I work in Sheffield and commute from S25 area. Drive takes about 20 mins in the morning (no traffic early) and about 50 mins at night (leaving around 4:30).
Lots of new propertys which are offering good incentives to new buyers (ie deposit paid / stamp duty paid etc). Also it's under Rotherham council tax which is a lot cheaper than Sheffield. Worth a look.

Totley is littered with ex council houses so how can it be considered to be the best????????????????????????
