View Full Version : Rag and bone men
we used to nag mum for some old clothes whenever we heard the rag and bone man coming around just so we could have a balloon or pen or a little note pad.there were times when we missed out though cos mum would want some new pegs.
i also remember the men that used to come round selling brushes etc
OneofThree 14-09-2004, 18:21 My mum would only let us get pegs. although we would have had balloons.
Strangely, i can remember giving plenty of rags but never any bones.
RoyalRegular 15-09-2004, 10:46 What about donkey stones?
And the ragman's trumpet?
and magic colouring books.
my old man told me when they were kids the rag man used to give them newly hatched chickens
RoyalRegular 15-09-2004, 12:07 Then there was the man following the horse and cart with a shovel and a bucket.............................
Quoted by Royalregular; Then there was the man following the horse and cart with a shovel and a bucket.............................
that would have been my dad,
ought for nought!
Greybeard 15-09-2004, 20:03 Weren't they called Totters ? Pretty sure my mother always had pegs off them. Anyway there were five of us kids so a balloon would only have started a squabble :D
Another horse and cart outfit I remember was the milkman, it was during and probably just after the war. He had two or three churns on the cart and measured the milk into a big jug we kept on the cellar-head.
And the Tea Man had a horse and whatever...posher than a cart. I think the name was Twinings or Ringmans...could have been both.
The knife and scissors man was a regular too but I think he had a contraption like a wheelbarrow.

On second thoughts it was a kind of tricycle. The drive chain could be switched to a grindstone mounted on the back

Do you mean Ringtons Tea Greybeard? My friend who lives in South Shields near Newcastle still buys tea from the Ringtons tea man and ginger biscuits!
Greybeard 15-09-2004, 22:12 Ringtons perhaps is what I'm thinking of.
I found a picture here...

I always had the balloons, myself. I think Ma must have had enough pegs.
Anyone get the Walls ice cream fella round their way? He'd cycle round Hackenthorpe selling ice cream and lollies from a huge grey-blue box attached to his bike. Poor sod must have been worn out at the end of his shift.

A.B.Yaffle 16-09-2004, 08:37 I remember there used to be a rag and bone man walking the streets with a huge barrow at Ecclesall in the mid 70's in the days when I was young! I was terrified of him!

we used to have the greengrocer come round with a horse and cart. the same horse used to double up at the wkends and bring craig's icecream. we used to go out with a jug and he put in so many scoops.
ramquill 16-09-2004, 18:05 Hi,
We used to get goldfish from our rag and bone man at Woodseats in the 60's. Don't think they lived very long...

tonytrav 22-11-2006, 18:01 dont forget the piklet man on is bike
I,m sure my mother used to get Dolly stones off the rag & bone man. I think its the right name, they used to damp them & rub them on the front door steps to colour them a light grey.
Janner
I think you'll find the stones were called Donkey Stones.
The original make had a depiction of a donkey on one side.
I still have one, don't ask me why I kept it
It must be the squirrel in me.
Happy Days!

I used to have a job at the weekends leading the rag and bone mans horse and cart around the streets, this allowed him to go in the back yards and do his yelling,he would do better that way and he would pay me two bob a weekend.we're talking about 1945 now.
l also remember the ice cream man on the bike but that was before you could buy Walls, his name was cheathams, lm not sure how he made his ice cream, but it was made without sugar or cream due to rationing,it used to taste quite good too, until Walls ice cream came in the shops after the war, then we found out what real ice cream was all about.
one day i was desperate for a balloon that i took my dads one and only overcoat to collins the rag man , my mum caught me and i got more than a balloon :hihi:
They are not a thing of the past..One came down our steet this morning..and I gave him my duff car battery...They come around every week..They do a great service taking away stuff that the Council reject, scrapped exaust pipes, old cookers , redundant satalite dishes, ..This is in "Stockton on Tees" by the way...It's lot like Sheffield used to be in the 60's ..Perhaps thats why i've stayed here for 35 years
I remember the guy on his bike selling piekletts and oat cakes my grandad used to go and buy them, also the fletchers van and a big orange van that sold allsorts of things.i lived on dugdale rd parson cross.:D
claire3725 31-03-2007, 15:17 The rag and bone man off london road was actually my grandad John Collins. And reading the posts has brought back fantastic memories which were great. He was my mums Dad and my mum sadly died last year.My brothers used to go out with him all the time and used to laugh at the way he shouted any ol' rags , even we never got usedto him shouting that loud.
As by brothers got older they hide when he shouted
denise2436 31-03-2007, 19:20 my old man told me when they were kids the rag man used to give them newly hatched chickens
We used to get little chicks off ours, we lived in Renishaw ( Derbyshire ).
Once they got big my grandad had them in his garden and then they went onto to the dinner table!!!!!!!!!!!!
the rag & bone man that came round our street when i was a kid used give us gold fish,
i lived on masters rd as a child, we called our rag and bone man frankie daisy, dont know why though, think we got goldfish or dolly pegs. they were the days.
Grandad.Malky 06-04-2007, 17:52 We used to go out to a vinegar man, he had a van with a large barrel in it that you could fill an old pop bottle from.
He also sold other household goods like soap, pegs, and detergent, polish etc.
One day I went to the pantry and got a bottle of pop, taking a good swig before spraying vinegar everywhere, not advisable.

Going back to rag and bone men i remember a yard/stables near to Norfolk Park (bottom entrance) on Norfolk Park road,
i think that was Johny Collins's place ?

Sorry i am late with the reply clair3725, i was only young when your grandad had the stables so all i can recall was the horses grazing in a field near to the park.
I have spoken with an elderly person about this and he said that John Collins had a place on Hill Street off Bramall Lane.
He also mentioned Johns son who he said moved away from Sheffield to take a pub at South Kirkby (Barnsley Area), he can't remember the name of the pub though.
spritulist 24-05-2007, 15:20 yes the shopwas on the end off hill street at the side of the old petrol station on the corner not been down for years my dad took me years ago to meet my cousins i rember the old grandfather clock at the side of the scales back in the late 60s.early 70s and the home made wheel barrow parked on the road but you may know of my grandmother nora collins in the rag trade
claire3725 27-05-2007, 17:11 My Grandad John Collins only had a daughter Edna ,named after her mother.I don't remember a Nora Collins but the Collins were a big Family. My great nan was Priscilla Collins and i remember my mum talking about aunts but i can't remember them all.Where does your mum fit in?
RoseHadi 03-11-2007, 23:20 I remember well the "rag man" coming on our street (Ferneough) in the 50's - I always tried to get the whip and top - great game, kids today don't know what they are missing!!
His tricycle would bear the legend "Stop me and buy one".
Alastair 04-11-2007, 23:45 I heard a rang and bone man recently and I thought they were extinct now. Today I noticed that the rag and bone mans place on Hill Street next to the Sheldon pub just off London Road looks still in business.
surely someone must remember our one and only rag and bone man derek from darnall, he used to take us for rides on his cart, for helping him with the rags, he often used to give us a handfull of pegs for our mam, such a lovely man
