Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone could offer and help and/or advice to me.

I'm wanting to become a photographer, but having been out of the photography world for a bit I dont really know where to start! What is my best starting point if I want to become a professional (or atleast semi-pro) photograapher. I have some academic photography qualifications, but these were gained a few years ago now. I feel that I must be out of practice and behind on the latest styles of photography and technology. Does anyone know of any good photographic groups/societys in and around the sheffield area that might be a good starting point for me?

Also does anyone know of any studios in and around sheffield that have good facilities and reasonably priced (my budget is fairly tight!)? I'd also be looking to do some work with some models, as this is something that I haven't really had much experience in. So does anyone know where I can find any models, or at least people willing to let me practice on them! I have looked at some of the agency sites, but unfortunatly I cant afford the fees!

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated!

Note to mods: Sorry if this is in the wrong place, didn't know where to post this, please feel free to move this to where ever you feel most suitable!

Thanks

Mr Goose

Given the widespread use of digital photography, the news media is now really keen on using freelance news pictures.. most newspapers have contacts for emailing in your own material

This could be a good (and free) way of building up a portfolio of published work

....And many companys often are on the look out for single roylaty pictures for use in annual reports/PR material etc - build up a good stock of pictures from round South Yorkshire!

Thanks for the advice Mr Goose! Its something that i'll definatly look into. But i still feel that I'm a bit 'rusty' and out of practice! I was kind of thinking that I might like to get into the personal market, i dont really want to be messing around with the media, although if its a way in I'll give it a go!

I'm afraid all studios are expensive - studios cost many thousands to equip.
My advise to you would be to contact Vic Middleton at Norton CFE.
He was my tutor some years ago - he's still there and you will have to go a long way to find a better man or tutor.
Best of luck.

Oooo what camera did you get - come on always worth making people like me jealous!
As for locations around the city - I always like Totley / Dore and Ecclesall areas. Of course the city centre churches are good - ooo yes the old General Cemetary is great :)
