View Full Version : Is this Hogfather hell??
I am now enduring the fourth hour of The Hogfather. :gag:
I now know what hell is.
My son is taping it, and watching it at the same time. I can't believe he is intending to watch it ever again. It is sheer dross.
Help me .... please. I'd rather be at 'Build-a-Bear' .......... honest I would.:(
Jabberwocky 18-12-2006, 21:45 Hogfather is awesome! Im going mad because I cant get to see it!
Death taking the part of Santa is.... well the book is awesome!
Beakerzoid 18-12-2006, 21:48 The 2 parter on Sky is a great adaptation of the book. The look, style, and cast all fit well, and I only hope for more Discworld adaptations in the future.
So it's just me then?
When does the action start?
Oh bugger, it's just ending! :) :)
Deepcarowl 18-12-2006, 21:58 Not seen the tv adaptation yet but I'm not holding my breath, read the book when it first came out and thought it was excellent- funny, witty and original, somehow i can't see it crossing to TV very well as I'm sure it will lose a lot of its charm as most similar adaptations do
Jabberwocky 18-12-2006, 22:03 Im hoping theyll run it on sky 2 or add it to dvd or something. I asked my other half for a sky package and she agreed...as long as I got rid of the internet first.
Bugger that for a lark.
It might have been bearable if it was clipped to about 2 hours, but four hours was a bit too long and drawn out. I found it very hard going indeed.
By the way Jabber, you were in it!!
Beakerzoid 18-12-2006, 22:14 If it was clipped to 2 hours, however, it would have suffered the wrath of the fanbase that it was aimed at - ie Pratchett fans - who would have bemoaned the bits that were missing. Thankfully it survived intact (including Death of Rats), and they didn't feel the need to add pointless action scenes and big explosions to 'amp it up' for the TV generation.
WallBuilder 18-12-2006, 22:17 I liked it because i just love the Discworld series and it was fun seeing some of the well known characters that I've rread about brought to life so to speak.
My favorite character after Death himself had to be the little guard, he just so fitted the part and looked right.
I wish they'd do a dramatissation of Terry's trilogy,, Truckers, Diggers and wings. The Borrowers with an alien slant.
Grim Reaper 18-12-2006, 22:17 I for one really enjoyed it :D
Plus when DEATH spoke he sounded exactly like he does in my head when I read the books

I read in SFX that the Bromeliad (truckers, diggers, wings) is set for a big screen treatment, although it is still in primary stages at present.
As for the guard...again, in SFX it was stated in interviews with the makers (and Pratchett) that even the minor roles were cast carefully in case the characters are used in any future adaptaions. Hence everyone seemed right.
Of choice for next adaptations, although I'd love to see some Rincewind action, I think they should look at some of the Guards series (Vimes is such a great character).
Having never read a Terry Pratchett book, I wasn't sure what I should expect.
Not having the basis of the book in my head, and seeing the story for the first time, I found it very hard to get into and follow. The sound quality left a lot to be desired as well. Did anyone else notice that?
alchresearch 19-12-2006, 11:44 It was very well made but it wouldn't have been my first choice for a Discworld adaptation.

Nobby Nobbs? Yeah, I thought so too, but he could have done with being a bit grubbier.
I for one really enjoyed it :D

That's exactly why I didn't watch it- I didn't want to impose someone else's idea of what everyone looks and sounds like on my own version.
So many things just don't look or sound like my own imagery that I didn't want to ruin it.
I missed the first scene with Nobby Nobbs, but please tell me that the other watchman wasn't supposed to be Fred Colon!
Susan was well cast, but David Jason just couldn't manage a greasy enough performance to carry off Albert properly.
Joss Ackland as Munstrum Ridcully was a wonderful suprise and one of the best performances in the whole thing.
But one thing really irked me.
It's a long time since I read the book, but was Mr Teatime really meant to sound like that?
WallBuilder 19-12-2006, 17:10 I'd love to see a dramatisation of the Truckers trilogy as I think that'd be really fun.
Mr. Teatime had an unusual voice but was sufficiently creepy to be entertaining although at times it didd make me think of Ashley the butcher from Coronation street.
I didn't see a swamp dragon though which was a shame.

Hmmm. I certainly didn't imagine Ankh Morpork to have a Victorian look about it.

Oooo in my head it is - Victorian / Medieval. Certainly looks like that when you look at the official maps of Ankh Morpork. It's one of the reasons why I like it so much :)

Thank Om for that.
coretext 21-12-2006, 19:47 its a great tv adaptation. Its crazy how they managed to make death such a loveable character. Anything with David Jason in it, is usually gold and this was no exception.
happy hogswatch! :hihi:
TrashyBook 27-12-2006, 16:43 Did anyone happen to record/tape/dvd the second part of this?
I set my dvd box to record it at 6pm on Boxing Day, as advertised in the Radio Times, and managed to get 2 hours of The Simpsons.
I've checked and can't find that it's scheduled again......
If anyone has it I'd be really grateful for the loan of a copy!
Thanks :-)
Oops..... just found that it's on Sky 2 tonight and tomorrow..... let's hope the listing is right this time!
